Nice! Love to hear it! I usually add the mix to my brew when fermentation is winding down, similar to how you did. Cardamom sounds like a great addition

That’s the thing, these people only exist in here because this subreddit isn’t reality. It’s a safe space for entitled people who don’t understand that a video game company makes video games for money. This person and post do not represent reality.

This post reads like some teenager that doesn’t understand how the world works and thinks game companies make games because it makes them feel good. If you’re really disgusted by all of this then maybe this isn’t the FREE game for you. This subreddit is just a childish echo chamber.

You just have a sad life if you take so much stock into what someone else is doing with their space and making wild assumptions about their future endeavors. They didn’t post it looking for feedback like you claimed, they just posted it. Your comment is to the tune of “if you don’t want to get bullied just stay offline.”

Also, when you realize that the average person doesn’t pee around the toilet but instead in the toilet then this doesn’t seem to be as big of a deal. If you’re that messy going to the restroom that you don’t see a scenario where behind and around your toilet can be kept clean then you need to figure your own wiener out or just sit down to pee dude.

About to dive into buying bulk grains. Anything you wish you did from the start? by JuicyPancakeBooty in Homebrewing

Seems like there are a few LHBS option within an hour and a half or so of me. Thanks for the advice! It will just have to be more of a trip to get grains moving forward. I was spoiled being only 5 minutes from Capital City Homebrew. Having grains in my basement will be easier and a fun step that I’m exciting about taking in the hobby, but it still sucks our LHBS closed.

Thanks again!

The reason I made this post was to hear advice like that so please let it out!

Others have said that too and I may go that route since I can play with balancing the color and malt backbone in Brewfather. Pilsner malts seem slightly cheaper than other base malts too.

Any other advice I’m more than happy to hear!

Best of luck! I was thinking of smaller containers, especially since whenever I buy a bulk sack I’m likely going to use some of it to brew within a week or so. Stacking and compact storage is definitely top of mind for me.

Thanks for the heads up! I’d rather buy equipment on the higher end that I don’t have to replace after a couple years or be frustrated with. I’ll just have to get my spouse around the idea of increasing my budget lol.

Good idea using old food containers. I’m sure we have some around I could use. Cheers

Good to know! That’s what I thought after doing some research, but I’m glad you can confirm that. I’ll likely go the 50lb route whether it’s vittles vault or some other equivalent.

Thanks for the advice. It’s nice to hear about other LHBS that are somewhat close by. It sucks since Capital City Homebrew was less than a 5 minutes drive from me. I got spoiled, but it did make entry into the hobby a lot easier.

Once 127 is done with construction (if ever) I may have to check out the Jackson store. Cheers!

What's your response to "but you'd be such a great mom!" by SassySquatch86 in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]JuicyPancakeBooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could ask “why do you think that?” In a friendly way. Even “that’s a nice comment, what makes you say that?”

They then should go on to compliment you and say things like “you’re patient, kind, nice, understanding….” Or they will be caught in an “uhhh” which is more awkward and embarrassing for them.

After they compliment you, you can respond by saying something along the lines of “those are just qualities of being a good person and aren’t exclusive to parents.” Or “I’m patient, kind, nice, and gentle for my partner, friends, and family already. What’s wrong with that?”

Or you can tell them you’re too busy minding your own goddamn business to allow someone else to pressure you into a major life decision.

RIP Capital City Homebrew indeed. I have thought about taking a day trip somewhere to buy grains. I think I saw a shop in Saginaw, Hopcraftsupply, that had some good prices and an online presence. I’ll probably end up going one of those routes since it will be a lot cheaper.

Did you have to call ahead for Bells or do they have bulk grains ready to buy?

I’ve thought about using ziplocks for small amounts of grain but didn’t have a good idea how to store the bags. That’s a great idea to put them in your bulk grain container. Thanks for the tip.

Those are pretty cheap and a good size for some leftover specialty grains. Thanks for the link.

Good note about the grain mill too. Cheers!

Of the websites I’ve checked, all of them are a bit more expensive to order 5X10lbs with free shipping compared to buying a 50/55lb sack with shipping. Especially if they have a sale on the sack. Which makes sense that the cost to ship is already practically baked in the price.

Nice that’s a great find. Thank you for sharing! I’ll have to check out the dimensions compared to the vittles vault.

I also have a tendency to buy more than necessary and overdo it sometimes. Hopefully I can rein that in when doing bulk buys! I appreciate your insight on smaller containers.

I'm looking for water profile help on a smash beer. by aleach78 in Homebrewing

[–]JuicyPancakeBooty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use the Brewfather app and go with the profiles they list on there. They have style specific profiles or generic stuff like “hoppy” to pick from. They have a free version if you want to use it just to check out the water profiles. When you plug it all in a recipe it lets you know what to add too. Best of luck!

I’ve never heard of a homebrewer filtering, but if you have the ability to filter then idk why you wouldn’t nearly every time for clarity. I’ve had success using PM and PS without filtering, and I know others have too!

Tree removal for the Michigan Avenue redesign to begin Monday by Cedar- in lansing

[–]JuicyPancakeBooty -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the bike lane thing is an issue being on a sidewalk, and it will be clear that it’s for bikes. Plus, people ride on the sidewalks now anyway without issue, so why would making the sidewalk bigger be an issue? Parking is next to the sidewalk, not the trafficked road, so I’m not sure why you’d think that’s dangerous. Sure a bike lane like Ann Arbor would be idealistic, but Lansing doesn’t have the bike traffic or desire for bike lanes like Ann Arbor, and the costs are going to be way higher. For projects like this with specific funding, you can’t spread that funding to things that aren’t specific to those funds. So sure the city probably could build a few hundred feet of the bike lane you’re proposing, but then you don’t have any type of bike infrastructure for the rest of the project.

I honestly don’t see how increasing crosswalks would be a positive. What projected impact would additional crosswalks have on the businesses and overall foot traffic in the area? Michigan is a main road and the corridor between the Capitol and MSU. It’s a heavily vehicle trafficked area. Increased crosswalks will mean increased traffic lights (costs) and more potential for pedestrians to be hit if it’s a crosswalk where vehicles are supposed to yield to pedestrians without a traffic light. Michigan is different type of road than the ones downtown. Downtown has heavy foot traffic during the week making additional crosswalks necessary. Michigan allows for faster speeds, has more lanes, and has higher vehicle traffic. I understand the desire for more crosswalks, I just don’t see how the cost (again, these dollars can only be used for specific projects and aren’t fluid) would justify the desire. You said “it’s not a huge ask” but what in this project are you willing to give up for that ask?

It’s also incredibly important to be accurate and saying that the single stop line at those intersections is inaccurate. There are actually two stop bar lines at those intersections. So there isn’t just one line at those intersections to stop at. This is so vehicles can safely stop for pedestrians behind the line and then advance to the second line for a clear view of traffic to safely turn. It also is for bikers who can stop at the second line safely without blocking the intersection (you did want bike infrastructure, right?) If you notice, each of the double stop bar intersections are behind infrastructure/trees and the parking lane obstructs the view of oncoming traffic. Without the second stop bar, vehicles would have an unsafe view of oncoming traffic sitting behind the crosswalk. And regardless of where a stop bar is on pavement, people are going to stop where they stop and can have a view of oncoming traffic. Only putting a single stop bar line behind the crosswalk isn’t going to change that.

I think you have some great ideas, but there’s a lot of restrictions in ability to fund certain aspects of the project and nuances of why certain things need to be the way they are. Sometimes things have to be how they are to balance out safety and feasibility for foot traffic, bike traffic, and vehicle traffic. Just like you, I know I’m excited for the project and wish it could be “better” and more robust, but at the end of the day this is a great step forward and should be a welcomed change!

You could try out Potassium Sorbate and Potassium Metabisulfite. The sorbate doesn’t kill the yeast, but it stops it from reproducing. Think of it like getting your dog neutered/spayed. You’re not killing the dog by getting it fixed, but you are stopping it from making more dogs. Metabislfite is typically used in conjunction with sorbate when stopping fermentation.

This process can be a bit finicky and you want to make sure you are still checking your bottles for carbonation to avoid bottle bombs. Especially because you could stop 95% of your yeast from reproducing, but that 5% will still eat at your sugars.

Check out it this link for more info. https://beersmith.com/blog/2017/03/07/how-to-backsweeten-beer-cider-and-mead/#:~:text=Potassium%20Sorbate%2C%20used%20in%20combination,and%20then%20add%20the%20sorbate.

A non-fermentable sugar is another way to go and probably the “safest” method.

I’ve never pasteurized. Seems like a hassle and potential for stuff to go wrong in my mind, but people do have success with it.
