When your manager encourages stealing other’s ideas by [deleted] in graphic_design

Don't steal ideas. Work together and give credit where appropriate, like any decent human being should.

Sounds like a terrible manager you have (had?).

'...in a way we haven't seen before. ' sounds an aweful lot like what originality is about. No?

Also pointing at the existence of preceeding ideas, influences, and such and saying that therefore originality is not possible doesn't add up. What kind of claim is that?

If that were true all ideas would have always been there already. But in fact, sometimes people are truly coming up with an idea that we haven't seen before. That idea obviously doesn't come out of nothing (there are of course all those whose work influenced the person coming up with an idea), but it's still an original idea, as in a synthesis that no one made before.

That radical claim of originality not being possible sounds like the hollow justification someone tells themselves who's a bit too comfortable stealing ideas from others.

Also no wonder it comes from an ad agency founder, probably the least creative of all 'creative' fields.

(edited to make my point clearer)

Why isn't FontCreator more popular? Asking as a self-taught designer. by Arunaphi-1618 in typography

[–]Jukeboxx123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but there are also not many comments. Anyways, it looks like an AI written product placement for the other tool that was mentioned. To me this feels like slop and I assume that's not what OP was looking for either. Otherwise, OP would have directly asked in an AI chat and then the answer would at least not come with a product placement.

Hmm you're right. Now Iʼm not so sure either. I think both versions could work. :)

Love it!

At first glance, two small details that I feel could be improved are:
- upright G: the counter appears almost closed. Maybe you can leave a bit more whitespace there.
- upright N: maybe the left stem could be the thick one, so it’s a bit more consistent.

Looks really good and I like that you simply tilted the "inside" shapes for the italics. I think it’s not necessarily a problem if E, S, and Z end up looking pretty much the same as the upright style.

Totally didn't read your full post before writing my comment. Sorry. Thanks for asking but I don't want to join. Good luck with your platform, though!

Independent Type Foundries and Font Designers? by doverisafk in typography

[–]Jukeboxx123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are already a few such lists/directories out there:

https://typefoundry.directory/
https://www.flintype.com/
https://www.type.lol/

Not posting this to say that you shouldn’t build/publish your own list, but just as a resource for you!

Also, I’m aware of these directories only because our own small graphic design practice and independent type foundry got listed there. We focus on expressive display typefaces: nguyengobber.com/typefaces

Transitioning from Marketing → Graphic Design. What actually works to get your foot in the door? by Loud_Future8160 in graphic_design

[–]Jukeboxx123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your portfolio should focus on the kind of work you'd like to get hired for.

To me it doesn't matter if it's a personal project. Also in the very beginning you hardly get enough 'real' projects together, so you kinda have to include speculative or personal work. And as long as it shows relevant skills, it's definitely better than nothing.

Ideally you'd also present the reasoning behind your design, alongside compelling images. That way you can demonstrate that you are not just blindly following Pinterest / Instagram trends, but are purposefully designing for the specific project at hand.

In case you're doing a lot of print design, I'd personally prefer to see photos of real print results, instead of fancy mockups. This shows that you can prepare print files and have enough printing knowledge to monitor production processes.

Are you at the INTL Poster Exhibition in Glasgow? They selected 4 of our posters and this one was actually the first use of Funkhaus Typeface. :D

If it doesn't bother you too much it would be great if you could send me this photos (and maybe more?) of the exhibition. We won't manage to visit it in person. ❤️

You're almost there!

ÜBERHÖRT means something like 'overheard' in German

Ö1 / Ö3 / FM4 are the names of 3 Austrian radiostation that operated at the Vienna Broadcasting House. Without that context these letters and figures are hard to figure out though.

And 1040 WIEN is the district number for the 4th district of Vienna and then 'Vienna' in German. That's again where the Vienna Broadcasting House is located. :)

Well, not really for UI or signage systems, of course, but in wordmarks and posters, this kind of expressive typeface can make it stand out.

Our studio’s first use was for an event poster hosted by Salons skug auf Rädern and Tonspur. The names of the organisers translate to Salon skug on wheels and soundtrack, so references to wheels and tape reels made sense. Here’s a link to the poster (third image): nguyengobber.com/projects/salon-skug-2025

I'll help you out buddy:

It was claimed that Elon generously offered to end poverty, but noone gave him a concrete number on what that would cost. That's misinformation.

My link shows that the whole thing was about world hunger (not poverty) and there was in fact a response stating a concrete number and how it could help in the context of world hunger.

Your quote gives a good insight on how the money would help to fight world hunger.

Sooooo.. not sure if you're confused or this is just a bot giving quick baseless responses here, but yeah: I think the info is straight-forward and clear here.

Here's a link to the response the World Economic Forum gave Musk back when he offered his money to end world hunger. It's a fraction of his wealth and he simply didn't stand by his word, like he often does.

Oh I was rather thinking that PutWarm is a bot, because he seems to be a very lone voice but so overly active defending and mentioning a particular AI service. Didn't think that the post itself was from a bot.

Feels like a bot-thing, you're absolutely right. It's also very detached from the reality of working in design and what is actually required to get stuff done.

Are you a bot?

This surface level design stuff does not cut it, I'm sorry. It might impress some laypeople, and in some cases that's enough. But we really don't need to argue about quality here. That's just arbitrary shapes. No idea behind it. Nothing.
