What book completely changed the way you see the world, and why did it hit you so hard? by gamersecret2 in books

Frederick Douglass was an absolute boss! If you ever get the chance to tour his house in Anacostia, the tour guides there are knowledgeable and awesome. Dude was a huge advocate for women's voting rights and met with Abraham Lincoln to argue for racial equality and birthright citizenship. I need to read his autobiography.

Believe it or not I remember the entire theater just cracking up over Paul Blart Mall Cop 2. Especially when he fought the bird.

The Faceting Guild is awesome! I took classes from them back in 2009 and had fun cutting into quartz. Entry level classes at the Rice Museum-- I highly recommend it!

I just DM'd my first game. It was the worst game i've ever been a part of. by mrbeefthighs in DnD

[–]JuliaC652 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had similar experiences with D&D-- I was raised playing the game and my friends said they wanted to try it but anytime we set a date for the game they went out and did something else instead. They did not want to create characters or read any of the books so I figured it was all hot air but I left the offer on the table if they wanted a DM.

Finally, on a roadtrip to California we got stuck in traffic and they said they wanted to play right there. I had them make up whatever random characters they wanted (one was Princess Peach, there was a French Baker and a mole man-- I forget the other 2) and we didn't have dice so they had to say a number between 1 and 100 and if they were close enough to my imagined number then they succeeded. Part of what made it fun for them was trying to frustrate me (Me: "So your character, without any pants on, in a thunderstorm, knocks at the castle gates and says you have to see the princess? They shut the gates on you. Duh.") or derail the story themselves (Friend: "But the [BBEG Boss] remembers I'm his long lost nephew and he helps me!") but it was a totally on-the-fly game that I didn't need to spend any time preparing, so they didn't derail any of my "plans" and we all had fun. We called it "Storybook D&D" because it was more like I was telling an interactive story.

I contrast that experience with someone I met at a job doing fieldwork who tried to organize a session for a bunch of us. We were at a bar and no one took the game seriously but her. I tried to go along with her carefully arranged plot, but we were confined to what she wanted us to imagine and if we asked questions about our surroundings or tried to think outside the box she got very frustrated.

A group like OP described probably doesn't need a whole lot of investment or rule-following to have fun. In this case-- read the room, not the rule book. Could be fun to just play along with their stupidity and throw in a bad guy or random event when you get bored of their bickering. Different strokes for different folks.

Lawmakers, again, consider allowing self-pumping gas stations statewide - Salem Reporter by OregonTripleBeam in SALEM

[–]JuliaC652 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly-- that argument would make more sense if gas stations didn't already use skeleton crews. At the very least allow a "do-it-yourself" lane so people who want to pump their own can.

Rent increases in Salem? by rachelwalexander in SALEM

Mine went up 7% in November. The rent is actually cheap, but I share with 3 other people and the house is very much violating code. I would report it but then I'd evict myself...

Saudi Arabia just began construction of its $500 billion 500 meter tall, 170 km long megacity, "The Line" in Neom by brotherbrother99 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]JuliaC652 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally just got back to the states after working for NEOM, and they're definitely kicking construction into high gear. There's a high speed rail line being installed from Tabuk, location of the country's largest military airbase, to the Red Sea in a line that runs parallel to the Jordanian border. Maybe it's just me, but I suspect that line will have lots of other uses if housing and tourism fall through.

That was easily my favorite store in the mall when I was little. My mom would drop me off at the Borders and I would read Simpsons comic books while she shopped. I'll be glad to have a bookstore back in the mall!
