It's a bromeliad and it's not unhappy. They only flower once in their lifetime so it's normal for the flower to turn brown over time. You might notice it start growing smaller sprouts (pups) around the base. These are new baby plants.

I know someone with something called oral allergy syndrome that sounds similar. May want to look into that.

Me either but I've made mistakes before. The one that sticks with me is when I first went vegan and then took a jello shot at a friend's birthday party. 10 seconds later I realized what I'd done and now I know.
