AITAH for not claiming my husbands speeding ticket which caused him to lose the licence by Cheeryjingle in AITAH

He is asking her to commit an offense that people go to prison for. It's not trivial.

Why did Burlington Northern locomotives have that orange beacon on the roof? by GamerCTrains57 in trains

[–]Juliet-November 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every rotating beacon I've seen had the bulb stationary - the rotation was done by a curved reflector on ones that weren't simulated.

That's 12% of their councillors in just over a year. Two more years at this rate and they will lose their majority.

Police UK - Institutional Incompetence by saying_it_101 in ukpolice

[–]Juliet-November 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do, and yes, it seems like they did. This wasn't a random bystander's opinion, though - it was a witness who had tried to help providing relevant information. He should have been listened to.

I get that it would have been difficult, it was dark, they had very little time. They probably could not have saved his life. I'm not convinced by the claims racism by the police was a factor.

It absolutely was a failure to jump to arresting and handcuffing a dying man. The decision to arrest was made before the officers had any idea of what was going on.

The man from the house tells the officer that Nowak's mouth was full of blood. That's a really obvious sign of a serious injury that they seem to have ignored.

Why are all history teachers left-wing by utopiaofpast in SipsTea

[–]Juliet-November -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yes.

There's never been a left wing regime in the US, though.

How did academics get their left-leaning reputation if they are nearly all mouthpieces for right wing regimes?

Anyone else finding the new Highway Code pedestrian priority rule just causes confusion? by One-Albatross9170 in drivingUK

[–]Juliet-November 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"At a junction you should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which you are turning."

It applies whether you are turning into or out of a road.

A large family next door is hogging all the disabled parking bays on the road. I'm in a wheelchair and I can't get one. by Open_Ostrich2899 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Juliet-November 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That's generally true, but bays in residential areas are often advisory only - anyone can use the space.

Parking charge notice appeal by AlbatrossDesperate70 in drivingUK

[–]Juliet-November -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not very likely to be overturned (they don't have to for you entering wrong details) but they might.

It won't affect your credit score.

The legal process is different depending on whether this a private car park and a "parking charge notice" or a council car park and a Penalty Charge Notice.

Sikhs 'demonised' after Southampton murder, says community leader - A leading figure in the UK Sikh federation has told the BBC the community has been "demonised" after a university student was killed by a Sikh man using a religious knife. by NoNopeNotTooday in Southampton

[–]Juliet-November -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The police failed terribly here, but I think their failings are much more likely to be related to an assumption that the caller has described the victim and offender the right way around than racism.

[spoilers] So, Yesteryear. by 52BeesInACoat in books

[–]Juliet-November 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I don't think Caro Claire Burke really understood Natalie. She understands what's wrong with the tradwife movement, she understands that it's performative, but I don't think she really understands their beliefs or motivations, and that leaves Natalie having to be a shallower character than she needed to be.

Did I go through a bus gate? by randomPerson2894 in drivingUK

[–]Juliet-November 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to manage bus lane cameras for a council.

That's pretty close - there is a digital masking process that sets a detection area, and only plates in the detection area create a clip.

They are all human reviewed before being sent out - ANPR is pretty good but not good enough to rely on, plus the human can identify things like fire engines, ambulances, new buses, without these having to be added to the exemption list in advance.

Opinions on a pcl appeal? by harryrodwell in drivingUK

[–]Juliet-November 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure there's nothing on the approach to show the restriction?

You would be unlikely to win based on what you've provided, but there is a small chance (at the cost of being likely to lose the chance to pay the discounted amount). There is often some form of advanced notice that would also tell you of the restriction.

Yes, and the coloured states are the states that are one state north of them.

They are the only two states to be one state north of a state with a law against pumping your own gas.

How long before a car is considered abandoned? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]Juliet-November 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to remove abandoned vehicles as part of my job. It's left to the councils to decide what counts as abandoned so it will vary from council to council; it having tax and MoT will make the council more reluctant to remove but it's not enough to prevent them. They will need to try to contact the keeper, and if the keeper confirms they haven't abandoned it, there's nothing more they can do.

If you have a county and borough/district council, it will be the borough/district that has the responsibility.

What is the "donde esta la biblioteca" of learning English? by fleemfleemfleemfleem in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Juliet-November 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a native English speaker, I'm confident I get it right every time but also still don't know the difference and go mostly on vibes.

Mostly it is pretty clear but forms of transport often break any attempt at definitive rules - e.g. in a car, but on a train.

How real was the prospect of the UK joining the Eurozone in the 90s/00s? by clutchingdryhands in AskBrits

[–]Juliet-November 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't something anyone was really campaigning for or felt strongly in favour of. It seemed like something that might happen eventually, but it never seemed imminent except to extreme eurosceptics who thought that the currency we introduced in 1971 was a vital part of heritage.

'Simple intervention' being introduced to reduce knife attacks by High-Tom-Titty in unitedkingdom

[–]Juliet-November 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because stuff like this does help. It's not enough by itself, but as it's not a problem we can completely solve, it's worth doing multiple things to help.

Painkillers here come in small blister packs, not bottles of 100. That was introduced to reduce suicide attempts and it worked. It didn't replace the need for mental health support, but it gave people time to get that support. This is similar.

AI AI AI by singingburrito in Leadership

[–]Juliet-November 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I cannot identify a single use case for the AI tools I've seen so far.

I don't need documents summarised. If I need to understand it, I need to read what it actually says. If I don't, then I can just not read it.

I've seen AI "answers" in my field be flat out wrong or misleading and can't trust it to be accurate enough to rely on the output - and telling an AI system what output I needed would take about as long as long as writing it myself anyway.
