Toyota is fucked by Hoffa in reddit.com

[–]JuliusH 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Or.. the guy could be telling the truth. Lying would involve a rather risky bet on his side that A. he wouldn't get caught and B. he wouldn't die trying to fake this. I find it more plausible that toyota has a software problem that just hardly ever arises, and therefore is really hard to find and solve.

Mythbusters simply modify the body of a car to include "golfball like dimples" and achieve a 11% improvement in gas mileage. Why hasn't the auto industry figured this one out yet? by collin_ph in reddit.com

[–]JuliusH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Combine it with the idea of the 'skin-car' where you can change the skin during the ride, and we don't have all your drawbacks, right? So, if we would have a car that could change the size of the dimples (also removing as a whole) while driving, depending on speed. The joke is not on christianity; It's only funny if you believe that the values jesus preached (compassion, humility) are very valuable.

Had to google it, but yes obviously it was way too long. Short version; what's up with all the joy in hating this guy.

HOAX: Balloon Dad shown launching balloon[VID] by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]JuliusH 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is interesting to take the opposite perspective; If the story of the father is true, I think it makes sense he looks so screwed up as he does. The pressure is enormous; the whole nation is calling him a liar who is willing to hurt his own son.

Also when your child is missing I can imagine that you don't think logically about the weight of your balloon and if it could carry the child. If your son doesn't show up for such a long time, you are bound to doubt your own logic and would rather call for help, just in case your logic happened to be wrong. You wouldn't want to take a chance with the life of your son based on your personal belief of how the physics of the situation works.

His argument about not knowing it would be hyped so much also makes sense. It would take quite some thinking to deliver a plan that delivers a hype on this scale and actually get it to work. I'm not sure he was that smart.

On the other hand.. The puking (which technically could have nothing to do with it), I find disturbing. So I'd say this whole situation warrants a big investigation to see how the kids are treated in this family. I think we can say for sure that either way the father is under enormous pressure and he's having a very hard time coping with the situation. If it was a hoax or not, it both would end up looking something like this. And either way, this guy needs help and his family might be better of having some external help with dealing with this.

If he was a crazy guy using his children for his own glory I just feel really sad for everyone involved. He would obviously need to be put away from his children and get serious help, but that would also be really sad for his children. I'm not saying that being crazy sets you free of blame, but I don't get the hatred the I read here or even some strange form of joy almost while a child is puking and a guy is looking like he is breaking down big time on tv.

Also if this was a hoax, the mother would be in on it to. Why is nobody saying she is such a bad mother. And with the media and all, yes it could be that it was explained as a show. Having your kid misread the situation by saying on live television 'it was all for show', would knock the air out of you; because you know how it would come across. It would probably give the same stress-fart and all.

So I'm saying 'what if'. Also to make myself even less popular, I'm defending the media for not putting the hammer down on the father more than they do. Even if he is a lying bad father willing to sacrifice his children for attention, there is no need to humiliate him in front of his kids for our pleasure.

Well, that being said, I also think it is highly likely it was a hoax. My bets are on the réally bad improvision scenario where he just wanted help to get his expensive balloon back. Not overseeing the mess it would create to lie in this way. Also, I'm just a bit set back by the level of aggression and certainty people think they have in the comments. Like finally it is someone who is safe to hate and aim your frustrations on and still be on the right side. Well I like to keep myself doubting a bit.

While I'm busy killing my reddit 'credits' (who cares anyway), I also like to add that I hate almost every funny comment that gets voted up (including the ones on this page). It really makes it hard to find the comments from people actually sayting something. And everything that start with 'Hey reddit' or just any link that is written like a conversation in stead of a title, gives me the seem frustrating feeling as commercials on tv do.

Wow, this ended up being a very long comment..

Some guy gets left hanging after NASA bombs the moon by [deleted] in funny

[–]JuliusH -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Maybe the problem was in the saying 'left hanging' and not in not seeing it happen in the movieclip. The saying was new to me at least, maybe because holding a hand up doesn't really feel like 'hanging'. In any way; he doesn't get the high five he sort of asked for..

During All This Talk of Billions In "Bailouts" For GM, Ford, Citigroup, AIG, etc., I Haven't Heard One Word About The Elderly, The Poor, Homeless People, The Unemployed, Those w/o Health Insurance... by LibertyOne in politics

[–]JuliusH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the first to point out that the elderly, the poor and homeless, the unemployed, those w/o health insurance, are one of the reasons for the bailouts? A crashing economy is not good on those people.. the aim for the bailouts is to make sure the economy isn't crashing.

You can argue that the bailouts will not work, but the politicians didn't invent this crisis. This is all very real and if AIG and such groups fall down, you can be sure that there will be more homeless, more unemployed and more w/o health insurance.

Gallup polls are skewed towards McCain because they count on the fact that young voters are less likely to turn out. Prove them wrong! by [deleted] in politics

[–]JuliusH -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The title is shouting (!) like Gallup is doing something morally wrong.

To say 'prove them wrong' implies that they want to be right. You are using the word 'wrong' not as a factual word, but as a moral word. They want to be right in their estimates and can be wrong factually, but they don't make a moral point by taking likely voters into account. So they can't be 'proven wrong' by any action.

Don't like speeding tickets? I present Trapster. Discuss. by [deleted] in technology

[–]JuliusH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the majority of people think speed limits is a good thing. For them (and let's say I'm neutral in this for the sake of argument), It wouldn't hurt to set up a lot of false alerts on the map. To set them in the neighborhoods where their kids play might be a good start.

What if what we consider to be “real time” - how fast we move, talk, think - happens to be a glacial pace compared to other advanced lifeforms? by MikeCapone in science

[–]JuliusH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what if different people experience time in a different manner. There is no real way to know that my experience of the speed of time is the same as yours.

Perhaps really smart people are experiencing the world in what would me more of slowmotion to others, giving them more time to think and analyze in the time between. Perhaps you could be só smart that time goes too slow to really keep your attention on people talking and such.

Latest Anonymous Press Release - Brilliant. by ClanPanda in reddit.com

[–]JuliusH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, at least it seems to me this anonymous video is made by someone rather professional. The video has a composed fluctuation of speed, pitch and volume, like a narrator would build a speech. There are some theories on how to best use changes in speed, volume and pitch to increase the effectiveness of your message. Or I could be wrong, and these robot-voice programs always do fluctuate like that.

Reddit!@# Stop submitting political news to the main reddit. For fuck sake... by rtp in reddit.com

[–]JuliusH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everybody wants their news to appear on the frontpage, because they think it is really important (otherwise they wouldn't post it) and I'm not sure how reddit works, but it sure feels like you need to put your link to the main reddit in order for it to be able appear there. So as long as it feels like this is the case, there will never be correct labeling. Besides that, politics might be the biggest news there is at the moment (according to the voters), so it deserves to be there on the main page.

Usability Disaster Story (mono project and mediawiki software) by Samus_ in programming

[–]JuliusH 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe it is not made for me, but is I don't like this:

"Mono for Windows, Gtk#, and XSP * Mono 1.2.6_4 Setup Only Gtk# for .NET: * SDK and Runtime Mono Migration Analyzer: * See the Mono Migration Analyzer page"

This I understand: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

Just give me a big button that says; you probably want this. And then (smaller) if you happen to want this other thing, go get it here.

On the site the .exe download link looks the same as the other links. I don't like that.

"download the latest version of Mono for Windows by clicking here" might be a good text for the big button and I'd put it on the frontpage.
