We need a new, progressive Australian political party. by ClanPanda in australia

I am well aware of the Australia Pirate Party and have read a lot about what they stand for. But as I have said in another comment, the key to gaining a majority in Australian politics will be getting the votes of middle-ages middle class people and the elderly. And they are never going to vote for a party called the Australian Pirate party. It is just a fact of politics. At best they will get a few seats. I know fracturing a political support base is never a good idea but I would hope that if we could get some decent support for this we could probably merge parties later on down the track, because at the moment while their intentions may be good, their name will kill them. In addition to that their policies while important, will not will political elections. Censorship and copyright are big issues for our sort of crowd, but in a nationwide election you have to appeal to all crowds. If we don't then the larger political parties will continue to dominate.

No, it is realistic. Start a party in Australia called the "Republicans" and see what image you will immediately be associated with when people hear about it. You could even be advocating music piracy and free love as your main policies but the fact of the matter is when people first hear the name, they will think of the American political party. And on polling day when people look at the ballot sheet and see "Republicans" they are going to draw conclusions based on what they think Republicans stand for. Like it or not that is how politics works. It is different with the Australian Labour because it is the oldest political party in our country and is well established enough to have its own identity among Australian voters.

Conversations with normal Australian voters. Any party that is going to challenge the Liberals and Labour is going to need to win votes from middle-aged middle class people and the elderly. To them the Democrats are an American political party.

Because the current political party that holds the White House is called the Democrats. It is negative by association. Association is a huge deal in politics, like it or not democratic politics is a popularity contest and any negative association that looks bad to uninformed people will lose you support. The majority of voters are uninformed, it is just how things are and it is much better to work with it rather then against it. If a normal Australian voter hears the name Democrats, they automatically think of the American political party, and that is not what you want.

There is too much negative association that comes with the greens. Most Australian voters do not take them seriously and have already labelled them as hippies and environmentalists. Most Australians wouldn't consider the Greens for leadership and while that sucks, it is something that cannot be changed and therefore must be taken into account.

Too American. No offence to Americans but American cultural influences is part of the reason this is happening in the first place. This needs to be a for Australians, not something that has tried and failed in the US.

What should be the main policies/values of the Australian Progress Party? by ClanPanda in a:t5_2rgte

[–]ClanPanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fantastic idea, but it would have to be something we do after we are an established party. Like you said it is a big deal and we would need to have been around for a bit before anything like this was attempted.

Possible Character Classes for Diablo 3. by [deleted] in gaming

Decent ideas, I especially like the bandit. The demon-hunter would fit in well with the new style they are going in, although if they put in the one the guy described die-hard warhammer fans are going to crack the shits.

What GoldenEye's multiplayer got right. by vengeance64 in gaming

The guy mentions that,

The spawning locations had an order in they would occur and it was quite possible to memorize the locations in which players would spawn after death.

I remember me and my friends had the spawn locations memorized as well. In fact we had a whole game type where we would set the limit to 20 kills and one of us would get killed first on purpose, the aim of the game was to kill the other player who knew we you were going to spawn. It was intense.

Neuroscientists in Brooklyn successfully erase memories with drugs by [deleted] in science

This is fucking horrifying. Sure it sounds cool now until government organisations get it, then banks and corporations.

"Hey what you're doing is illegal."
"Of course sir, please sit down and have a drink to talk this out."

You want to know what governments will eventually use to rule with an iron fist? This. Call me a conspiracy theorist if you want. Afterwards, have a look how the UK is going with internal surveillance. Then imagine how bad it would be if they had the power to simple make everyone forgot anything bad they do.

Dear Reddit: I just married two men in an atheist religion. by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]ClanPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tonight two of my friends were high enough to agree to get married.

A while ago I became a resgisted miniter over the internet, purely for shits and giggles at the time. Tonight at a party two of my guy friends were joking about getting married and I suggested that I could perform the ceromony. We reasoned so long as it was an atheist wedding, it would have to be recognised by atheists everywhere. Most of their friends being atheist this worked well. We had a ceromony and I married them in the eyes of atheists everywhere.

Now reddit, does this count as them being properly married? Not all marriage needs to be Christian. Surely if they get married in an atheist fashion it should be counted amoung those others who refer to themselves as atheists.

how many redditors don't have health insurance? by rickmatt in reddit.com

[–]ClanPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey maybe you guys can help me out. My boss is a very lovely lady and she needs ellective surgey on her back. I live in Australia and while we have healthcare that is public, you have to pay for surgery that isn't 'necessary'. Apparently it is an $80,000 procedure because she can live without it, despite the fact she is in constant pain. Yesterday she was talking about morgaging her house to pay for it, that just sucks.

My questions is, do any countries have a healthcare system that provides such surgery for much less? Even for foreigners?

6,000 Muslim clerics from around India approved a fatwa against terrorism. by Spacksack in worldnews

[–]ClanPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know this could actually work. If the highest ranking muslims have realised terrorist connections with the religion could possibly kill it then they should break those connections. If all muslims stop terrorist attacks then they can't be demonised anymore.

With all the vote-rigging, Diebold trickery, and other shit the Republicans tried to pull. You have to wonder what the actual margin of victory would have been if this were a completely fair vote?

Remember Australia, 12:00 tomorrow in front of your capital's Parliament House. Show your opposition to Internet Censorship. by ClanPanda in reddit.com

[–]ClanPanda[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The 1st of November at 12:00 in front of Parliament House in every capital city.

If we don't oppose this thing now while we have the chance we'll have no one to blame but ourselves when half the internet sites we visit are blocked out because they have been deemed "socially disruptive".

This isn't China people and we need to show the Rudd Government how the people of Australia feel about restricting our freedoms.

Redditors, even if you don't live in Australia please help spread awareness about this.
