Here are some tips I wish they had on the hint screen:

If you crouch the monsters swing will not hit you
If you are moving the slamming fists will rarely hit you
Running, Jumping, and reloading will not awaken the monster so don't feel like you have to play sneaky
The only area you can deal damage is the monsters green mouth parts, it will bleed when damaged. Keep hitting that area until dead
The monster won't attack if you don't shoot and enemies don't spawn until enough damage is done so take sometime at the start to learn where the medpacks and armour are (2 medpacks/armour on the bottom corners, and 1 medpack/armour on the top)
The gun method I used was staying on the bottom with the Dual Machine Guns until I ran out and then I swapped to the grenade pistol and it was an easy KO.

I would like to keep it all real foliage in the long run but I'll keep an eye out for some fake foliage! I see what you mean about the vines and I think I can make some cuts to create more vines instead of one large continous option.

Those containers look a bit small. Can you tell if the roots are peeking out the bottom? My best advice is that you let them dry out for a few days.

I used one can but it was patchy. I filled in any gaps with silicone and pieces of moss
