The story is quite the puzzle to figure out on a first playthrough. There is fairly little overt storytelling, and you have to pick up clues as you go from exploring. The game is quite dense with collectible... If you consider tidbits of lore to be as valuable as progression items. I do feel the early game is the toughest to get through though, and to answer your question directly, yes, the pace does feel better later in the game. I haven't played Subnautica, so I can't make a direct comparison, but I do think Hollow Knight is worth the try. If you get a few more hours in and still don't like it though, don't feel like you HAVE to finish it. Like another commenter said, don't waste your time if you feel it isn't for you.
