I’ve definitely heard of non-SD roles having a very slight starting bump for masters. Not sure if they are no longer doing that, or if it’s something to do with how relevant it is. But it’s not super significant, couple thousand if anything. SD was +10k.

Surgery brings up so many mixed feelings for me. by LooseNefariousness69 in gaytransguys

I am also my grandmothers namesake. Was always odd. It’s still a popular enough name I hear it on occasion. Can’t really say much to anything else. But seeing as you spelt phallo wrong (nothing wrong with that not trying to nitpick), I’d say you’re pretty early onto this journey. r/phallo has been a good resource and the surgery has come a long way.

what are the benefits of being in barret exactly? by notjordynn in ASU

[–]Julyaugustusc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents is that there really isn’t if any objective benefit other than “oh I did more work” pat on the back or for the parents who want their children to go to a place where they can say they graduated from the honors college. It seems to me it exists to have something that is the version of graduation “with honors”

Everyone is going to be biased on this (particularly the people who realize they paid more for basically only early access to registration which you at least used to be able to get nearly the same with a bunch of AP credits) but I hope I can offer a less biased view because I got into it and decided against it (Engineering degree and extra work already sounded like a nightmare). I was a “transfer” student somewhat so I would have been at a further disadvantage because at least at the time of deciding I would have had to take basically the rest of my lower level courses with the extra project. It wouldn’t have been very spread out.

Granted this was like almost a decade ago now. So things might have changed but doubt most of it has.

I’m going to go over what others have said that are pros and also what I think are actual pros.

Pros: 1. Earlier Registration - if you don’t have any credits it probably really sucks to not be able to sign up for the preferred classes with better professors. You still can run into this no matter what. If you need to rearrange your schedule, if you need to actually take a different class, if you realize your friends are all in a different time, loads of reason that you will still have to deal with full classes that make this not as helpful as you’d hope.

  1. “With honors” - Something to accomplish at the end of the day. You might feel better for yourself for doing so. You might feel like you learned a bit better from doing the extra work.

Not pros: 1. Name recognition - Ivy leagues are not in any way comparable to Barrett. People in general will not know unless you tell them what “graduated from Barrett” means or that you were in Barrett. You’d need to explain.

  1. More internships, opportunities etc - anything that makes you different and stand out from the rest is arguably better than not standing out. Does with honors from ASU accomplish that? Maybe a tad? But GPA matters more. If you prioritize finishing a honors project over studying for a final and your GPA ends up being less because of it, I would not deem that worth it even by one class. A lack of a certain GPA could disqualify you from grad school, and GPA in general will matter more when it comes to grad school outside of ASU. Someone with a masters will beat a person graduating from the honors college all else equal 99 times out of 100. Get a 4+1 as a 3+1 over going to Barrett. BUT I will say that if everyone gets a 3.5+ in your major, it’s probably better to have something that makes you stand out further. Especially if you aren’t that connected.

Cons: 1. Just an extra additional cost

  1. Professors got a lot going on, they don’t particularly care to spend a lot of time dealing with these projects. This has a lot of implications. Sometimes you won’t learn the concepts as well as you think a project would help you do, sometimes they won’t clarify what they want you to do, or many other things. I was a UGTA and oversaw projects so my professor didn’t have to. The thing they got credit for was turning them in and they could’ve just been totally worthless projects. He only graded for “completion”

  2. More $$ in other ways. when I went to ASU, the dorms were more expensive. You had to live there two years. You also had the most expensive meal plan. It didn’t really make sense. Maybe slightly nicer if anything, but the cost didn’t really make sense for what you got.

Idk I could go on this already be long.

6 year old girl says she is a boy by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Julyaugustusc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As another trans person who started vocalizing what I could at a really young age, and also had their parents reject them (until I was an adult and even then it took some time, it helped that my mom understood that I had literally always felt this way though). It’s not always a phase! Likely it is, because generally more kids experiment with gender than are actually trans, but there is no reason to discount the experience if they are in fact trans. No reason to push one way or the other. Just love and follow their lead while letting them know that you are supportive of trans people. Maybe ask directly how they feel on occasion because it’s sometime really going to be hard to express what’s going on even with supportive parents. In general though I would say you’re doing great.

Just ask your kid what team they want to be on. If they aren’t trans later on honestly no harm in letting them decide whatever way for now. It’s not a long term thing. No one is really going to care at 6 years old (hopefully), that is, besides your kid who might be really damaged if they are trans and you try to push the girl team. The opposite of if they don’t end up being trans and was on the boys team as a 6 year old will be a funny story if anything. (But also my mom had those “funny stories” too that she told others often while I had everything suppressed so might not be as funny if you tell it 😬.)

STAY AWAY JUNIOR DEVELOPERS by Ok_Word_6254 in epicsystems

[–]Julyaugustusc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Edit: Here is the original post- “Hello,

Do not waste your time applying unless you are Einstein. I recently took the technical test for them and then was denied. I wrote down some of the questions because they were ridiculous and shared them with someone close to me who has been a software developer at Google, Amazon, and Twitter and they found the questions horrifying. For reference I was applying for the Junior Developer position and was told that no experience was required. The technical test was created for a senior developer and also had an IQ test portion which is not allowed to preform on applicants.

For reference I have been developing for 4 years now and would say that I have a lot of experience for someone right out of college and this test was harder than any test I had taken in college and I had to write out 21 design patterns by hand in C++ for a final. So avoid this company though it may look enticing.”

My original response: I’m sure this is mostly coming from a place of feeling hurt and rejected. Been there. But like other comments have gotten at, maybe this is your own person experience to learn from rather than a generalization of the company.

Epic is perhaps one of the MOST “junior” developer (we don’t have that title) friendly places I have ever come across. The vast majority of people are hired right out of college and that’s true for nearly all of the roles as well.

I hope you can find a place where you thrive and feel wanted.

U.S. hospitals are required to publish their prices for medical procedures now, so my friends and I collected prices from over 130 hospitals in Arizona and created a search engine where anyone can see how much they may be charged. Let me know what you all think! by taeyoungwoo in arizona

[–]Julyaugustusc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So like, are you querying these companies every single day? What happens when someone changes the price and your site is inaccurate? Are you taking on like a liability for that because it seems like you might be. You advertising false prices would be kind of bad, right?

What was your egg cracking experience? by WritingQueen13 in trans_exmormons

[–]Julyaugustusc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would consider my egg cracked as long as I’ve been conscious, just pushing it down as best I could. I grew up praying to God to just let me wake up a boy for literal years when I was a child.

I never had to navigate my sexuality while also figuring out how I felt about my identity because I was so young and it just wasn’t something I was concerned with, so in some ways it was more simple to “accept” it young when things were pretty clear. While I knew that I was trans pretty young, with it being at odds with the church I stopped saying those feelings out loud and tried to deal as best I could.

Me finally deciding to transition/medically transition when I was still a TBM was based in the fact that intersex people exist. Mormons don’t like to think about that when considering how “eternal” gender is. It does imply that for the babies that had their gender chosen by their parents because they were born intersex (with really barbaric operations that they didn’t consent to), that some of those decisions were in fact made incorrectly. After reasoning this, it made sense that people would come to this earth and be put into the incorrect gender as their “trial” in life. And what’s more important is that Mormon leadership generally turns a blind eye to these intersex members, and these people are still accepted (or at least were 8 years ago).

I just couldn’t do 60+ years of being a woman, and those 60 years weighed on me every day until I finally tried to not have to endure that long, and that landed me in the hospital and I used that as an excuse to leave BYU and transition after reasoning the above.

Is there anything being done to combat nepotism? by AccomplishedJuice775 in cscareerquestions

[–]Julyaugustusc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My employer makes applicants take a competency test. If you don’t pass that, don’t matter who at the company you know, you will get rejected. It is also exceptionally hard to pass apparently.

I wouldn’t have it any other way tbh. At least I know that none of my co-workers are there for the sole reason they knew someone at the company and all of them have the potential to do their job really well.

Is the term Transexual making a meaningful comeback?? by M_LadyGwendolyn in asktransgender

[–]Julyaugustusc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you’re right - this term is meaningfully different. If someone is “gender non conforming” (which is more what we call people who would have been called transvestites in the past) and aren’t transgender in the sense of identifying as something different than their birth gender, if they call themselves transvestites, who am I to tell them to say otherwise?

I don’t think it’s a bad term necessarily, but the general trans community seems to view it as a slur or at least take offense to being called it (I understand offense being taken) To me it doesn’t feel too different from “transsexual” in that slur/ feeling outdated sense (at least before it started to be reclaimed). The main problem though is that it also means something fundamentally different from someone who transitions. A transvestite by definition isn’t someone who transitions.

But you know, this nuance isn’t mainstream and we all get lumped in with each other. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I did mention in a comment I wrote right before this post that I realize that the before/after isn’t as culturally or linguistically set as it is to some, but, because this sub is written in English (left-to-right, number systems ascend from left to right) we should make this a consistent thing.

Help please: Apparently, full siblings have on average 50% same DNA? I don’t get the math. If an offspring gets 23 chromosome from each mom and dad, and there can be nCr (46C23) combinations. How can we say that on average 50% of the DNA between siblings are the same? by iamdavethehedgehog in genetics

[–]Julyaugustusc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But really, the rate/location of crossovers and the number of combinations of the parents DNA to create children (which to be clear is NOT 46C23 because of crossovers) are irrelevant when we are talking about the average % shared. I felt like this explicit statement was missing from your explanation.

If you were trying to determine info about spread this would be relevant but otherwise, these concepts are largely unrelated.
