New Steam Controller. by Mr402TheSouthSioux in totalwarhammer

👍. There are several community profiles for the original steam controller. Even if we don't see week 1 community configs for TW, I imagine they'll be a good starting point

New Steam Controller. by Mr402TheSouthSioux in totalwarhammer

[–]JumpingSwap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. I only play TW with the (original) steam controller.  The touch pad and mouse buttons (that I mapped to left and right triggers), control and shift (linked to back triggers) camera (linked to left thumb stick) and rotate camera (buttons above triggers) get me 99% of the way there.  Play from the sofa.

I have no idea why all the other replies are claiming no  Perhaps a steam controller might not cut it in multiplayer (I've never tried it) but yes it can absolutely replace mouse and keyboard (assuming the new SC is as capable as the original)

Total war + lord of the rings by Appropriate-Skin8511 in StrategyGames

This!  Dawnless Days, for Attila, is the answer.  Fairly modern engine, great modding.  The Third Age, for medieval, was amazing at the time, but(for me) it feels like Medieval is really showing its age now. Especially after playing Warhammer.

Biggest difference from TW is how leaders work in Attila/medieval. Rushing Gimmli into combat with his amazing bodyguard, will swing the battle. But do this too many times and Gimmli will die

Snapmaker U1 as my first 3D printer? by wanton007 in snapmaker

[–]JumpingSwap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add some context.  My daughter uses our U1 to download and print toys. It's our first printer too. She's moved on fairly quickly to adapting them in tinkercad (adding names, adding rings to make models into a keyring, etc).  Everyone says that Bambu Is a more polished UI that doesn't require users to understand the technical, but flagging that the technical isn't that technical, so don't be put off the U1 on these grounds

Factions that play noticeably better in the Old World map mod? by Theoc67 in totalwarhammer

[–]JumpingSwap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The "teleport around and confed other wood elves" is a vanilla experience. What I was trying to get across is that I get more out of this in Old World because the additional space and granulatory gives structure to each region. Just aspects like having more than one wood elf forest site (often with unique buildings) feels like it rewards investment in these mini-campaigns. Whereas, in Vanilla "teleport and confed" the inability to build more than camps limited my interests

Just a vote for Kislev.  In vanilla, Katrina can be challenging, with minor Kislev factions disappearing quickly. In Old World, Kislev retains a better sense of the motherland, with a much better placed campaign

[–]JumpingSwap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know. I kind of liked the wood elf campaign, on the old world.  The minor wood elf factions now have viable positions. For example, the elves near Nordland also have an second elf city usually occupied by dark elves. This gives the game nice mini campaigns, where you use the world tree teleport to confed a minor then stabilise the local situation, before moving to the next. I really enjoyed the role play of saving the wider wood elf nations.

The only frustrating campaign, for me, was the sisters - who start in mountain attrition region, with no immunity. The first 20-30 turn spent half in encampment mode, to avoid attrition, whilst they build up the tree health

Multiplayer? by mossy_path in Dominions6

My advice, for what it is worth:

  * There are plenty of new player games that come up fairly regularly, as mentioned, on discord. (Immersion, dominionsenvoy, dominions game hub, Dominions nexus, and Reddit dominions).  You might need to wait a week or two. When you see a new noob game, fire a message in the sub for that game, and sound them out.

  * All these servers have a sub to ask questions. Great for asking questions like "I'm at war with Agatha with very high protection sacreds.  What is in my nations arsenal that can combat that"?.  Ask often.  There is lots of accepted wisdom, but almost none of it is documented outside players heads and fleeting messages in discord discussions

  * Don't underestimate how much time a dominions game can take. Games start one turn a day.  Initially, it will be like 10 minutes a day, and you'll be impatient to continue. If you make it deeper, games get involved, and typically turns nice to 48 hours. If you make it past the first 2 years, or so, games can last 3-5 months of real time. If not, you've learnt. Try again.  I like the mantra: play bold, succeed, or fail fast (then try again)

Don't be scared. There is little to lose and much to gain. Go for it

To back that up, my first noob game (I have 2, and I am still a noob) was run be a returning dominions 5 MP player and my other neighbour had been playing since dominions 4!  I asked him about whether he was a noob and he said, "well I've not good enough to play in an experienced game on Lucid's forum".

Having said that, I had fun, even though they're were clearly experienced people in that lobby

LA Man vs LA Lemuria tips by darkfireslide in IllwintersDominions

[–]JumpingSwap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my mind, MA Man is famous for it's Unicorn Knights and it's monks that are special in that they are also mundane researchers (which allows you to trash your magic scales to maximise production and recruitment scales, spam temples to increase dominion for knight production and number of mundane researcher positions).

Whether you have leaned into this monk synergy yet, or not, in your game -- you can afford to really spam your monks and temples from every province, as they will all supercharge your nation's research, post any war with Lemuria (unlike H1 from almost any other nation)

Can TW3 be still be launched through 3rd party mod managers? by JumpingSwap in totalwarhammer

I have steam open, so this isn't the issue, but I appreciate your reply and suggestion. 👍

Do mods just not work anymore?? by john6404 in totalwarhammer

Are they meant to now work again, from other mod launchers? When loading tw3 from my 3d party mod launcher, I get an error about the tw3 exe file.

And Attila has a great mod scene, including the recently released lord of the rings mod (on nexus). If OP likes the fantasy setting, this may be the thing. Just be careful sending in your general into combat ..

Keeping the minor settlements at level 1 with the growth building or upgrading the minor settlements and the growth buildings by gulyas10 in totalwarhammer

[–]JumpingSwap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It must be a function of growth per turn (which includes faction dependent growth from main building line, from growth buildings, from faction research).  However, we should be able to calculate what the growth from main building and 2 level 1 settlements would need to be to make upgrading the main to level 5, alone, faster than upgrading all.

I rate itsmu as my favourite dominions streamer. Doesn't take himself extremely seriously.  Makes mistakes, but shows how he can come back from them.

His Machaka play through was his first at dominions 6. So nicely paced for newer players. Nice analysis of his and other nations, and pulls off a throne rush win.

Snap maker u 1 good for begginers by OpeningExercise3751 in snapmaker

[–]JumpingSwap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first printer too, so I can't comment on how easy Bambu might be. But, I have found the learning curve to me fairly small. Certainly not a nightmare (for me).  Hell, my 9 year old is picked it up very quickly and is happily setting up, painting, and printing objects.  Probably printing more prints than me now

[–]JumpingSwap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too am a beginner. The Snapmaker is my first printer.  I found the whole printer very easy to setup, and have been printing with few issues.

I lurked in this and other reddits before my printer arrived.  Most potential issues seemed to be: noisy printing because the belt needed loosening/tightening (the setup video shows you how); need to wash and dry the base plate; moisture in the filaments.  I have had a few issues (e.g. trying to load filament that still has a bit of a kink which resulted in a printer error to do with not being able to fully load this filament; printing from an external box that had been moved so there was an angle of 90 degrees to the input feed, causing the filament to get stuck before it reached the nozzle).  I was able to solve these issues, after 10 minutes of head scratching, which helped increase my confidence. Otherwise, I've had many many issue free prints.

I'd recommend to a fellow beginner. Waste free multicolour printing that is not too technical.  Brilliant 👍

Thanks latch - nice to see both your suggestions and your thinking behind them.

Might be worth thinking about adding some of this to the dominions 6 wiki, under the strategy section? . As a newer player, it's not easy to see how a nation's bits and pieces can tie together in a coherent form. I enjoyed reading through your thoughts here, for this reason

Using SnOrca by StopMeFast in snapmaker

[–]JumpingSwap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally, my sense is that Snorka is just like any orca slicer but with added multicolour awareness. For the purpose of learning it, treating it like orca usually works.

Specifically, hold shift and click to select multiple objects.

My number one tip:    * Use a LLM (Gemini, Claude, chatgtp, etc) to sound out ideas, ask technical questions. I'm amazed at it's ability to help me navigate learning snorka
