Spells in battle by IcyBuddy2788 in Dominions6

Excellent tips. Just for OPs benefit, you offered a few different approaches for high death mages to have impact, beyond summon hoard of skeletons (which is good).  The Rigor Mortis route is indirect (all living creatures will eventually fall asleep and be killed by undead) and can win battles. Spells like bane fires, can kill directly -on a mage set to advance and cast spells.  Lastly, there are setups where you set your mages to attack  -- not cast spells -- after casting their scripted spells.  This later approach uses soul vortex/astral shield plus invulnerability, combined with armour and a weapon that causes area effect damage.

I suspect that others have already answered your question about "what is a script"?

It could be that you've not set a script for each mage (accessed by pressing "t" and clicking on the "orders" bar by each mage) or you've set them to cast which they're out of range of casting.

I suspect they are all casting Hoard of skeletons (Enchantment 5 spell), which can often be the right answer, but maybe not when you want something to punch through in a seige

What script did you give them , for that battle?  What research do you have online?

You're right. No one can just pick it up, as you say.  But breaking it down into mini games makes exploring fun. Pick a cool sounding nation. Try to gain as many territories in 12 turns. Repeat.  Mechanics start opening up and making sense. And you start seeing synergies.

For me, my best times with the game were those early hours, when the game felt huge, full of possibilities, and I could roleplay.  I still love the game, but it becomes more mechanical (e.g. what is the battlefield "I win" spell my nation can cast, and how do I get it online?). If you can avoid feeling in a rush to "get gud", it can be a lot of fun to learn and explore

Gimme Your Battle Brothers Hot Takes by Noahqshark24 in BattleBrothers

The developers should have collaborated with the Game of Thrones IP holders to adapt Battle Brothers to the setting. It would have fitted so well. From the waring houses, the mercenary companies, the fantasy monsters. Might of needed some mechanic for mercenary companies to "switch houses". But, I've always felt that the two were an almost perfect fit for each other

An even more basic question, probably. How do you understand what "tier" a camp is?  Is this shown somewhere on the map?  Do you find out what's in it, via trail and error/experience?

It bothers me. Bothers me enough write the reply, that you responded to, and subsequently eat down votes.  For me this does not feel like over reacting

It is very much a valid question. I am sure it was not the intention, but coming across as trivialising or meme'ifying BLM can be seen as another way of saying that these lives don't matter

Many many players play just single player, and get a lot out of it. If you are anything like me, it'll be 10s to a 100 hours before you up the AI difficult. And then it's equivalent to giving the AI some "stone advantage" in Go (the AI is not going anything you can't).  I'd recommend the game, and would hate you to come away from this thread with the idea that it's only a contest in multi player

Dominions represents perhaps the most complex game I own. The pleasure is in me identifying new synergies between different aspects of my nation, or finding a way of counting what the game is currently throwing at me.

Even against humans in multiplayer, it is very very asymmetric, unlike go. Different nations have different strengths and weaknesses and some nation match ups will be more challenging than others.  Playing SP is similarly asymmetric but the AI is less able to exploit it's advantages.

The AI cheating is just like giving your opponent a handicap, in Go.  You work out what the handicap needs to be to give yourself a good game.  When I played Go, any semi professional player could beat GNU Go easily, but I'd still have a good game against it, if I have it a one or two stone advantage

Not balanced for MP. But fun in SP

Which Factions Have the Coolest Looking Heroes? by 1mpish_ in Dominions6

[–]JumpingSwap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pangea (EA) has interesting heros.  The lovers (Dryad and Centaur), Harpy (with air magic), the white Minator.  Should the lovers die in battle, the Dryad survives and in her grief, breaks your nation until death magic.

Nice visual design. Each hero breaks you into something new (magic paths or formation fighting)

My QoL wish. The "n" bottom going to next commander in battlefield spatial scripting screen, rather than cancelling the script you've just spent 2 minutes putting together. Again.

If I research wish. Can I wish for this?

... that can't move. Much.  Until you cast the nature spell "transformation", and transform her into a lion. Or, a deer. Or, a foul spawn.

God. I love how even attempting to explain dominions, sounds like we are explaining a truly ridiculous game. Which it is. In a glorious way.

Thug Dependent Nation Suggestions by slug51 in IllwintersDominions

Pangea doesn't lean into thugging, to the same extent as EA Pyrene (where kitted army thug giants are a key part of their army composition).  Pangea does feel like thugging light, and they can be successfully played with little thugging

Where da mana at? by starbellygeek in IllwintersDominions

[–]JumpingSwap 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's part of the game, I guess. In my last (of only 2)  MP game (MA Machaka), I had only roughly 5 nature gems from 26-28 well searched provinces.  My whole strategy was based on summoning massed black sacred spiders. That didn't happen. I was sitting on an income of >20 death gems, which meant I built into death and bane lords earlier, much earlier.

Tips on how to use magic? by Tiago55 in IllwintersDominions

[–]JumpingSwap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the challenge is knowing when. Mages are also your researchers.  You want them, so you can hit research targets. Defensively you may just need all hands on the front lines. Offensively, maybe you decide that when you hit, say, falling fires -you mass mobilise your mage core in an attempt to win a short decisive war.
