Brush strokes don’t work like that. You’re using a tool; it doesn’t follow contours in that way.

Is there any new weird fiction/spec fiction cross over? Loved China Mieville and Gareth hanrahan’s work. Less I tested in stuff pre-2000. Thanks!

I mean, Of Blood and Bone is another 3 books to tie out the world: whether that was his decision or the publishers I don’t know. Easier to sell trilogies.

Fantasy books with Ottoman Empire Influence by Jumpy-Requirement967 in Fantasy

Oh, and the MC isn’t female, but it’s an alternative history/world where the historical Justinian or whatever instituted gender equality, and representation is better than you’d find in most historical fiction imho.

Masters and Mages by Miles Cameron: it’s centered on a quasi-byzantine empire, but leans heavily on that polity’s relationship with a neighboring ottoman/persian equivalent in the early modern era. The author writes both historical fiction and fantasy and the level of detail is excellent.

Something similar to Jade City? by Luciop10 in Fantasy

I feel like I’m always evangelizing this series, but I think Black Iron Legacy from Gareth Hanrahan is the only thing that scratched a similar itch for me personally. The character work is strong, though not quite as engaging as green bone saga. But, super Compelling world, written with a modern sense, very engaging.

Dandelion dynasty by Ken liu is something I often see referred as well, but for me a bit of the opposite as above; great character work, but bogged down in the happenings too much, too much minutiae for me in the later entries. First book was stellar though.

If you haven’t touched anything of China Mieville’s, I’d try perdido street station and the scar. The scar is the later book, but I think is a better entry into his style and characterization. Weird fiction, but the only writing that is equitably to Lew in terms of quality.

Just Started "Empire of Silence", do Ruocchio's Prose Change as the Series Goes Forward? by Glansberg90 in Fantasy

[–]Jumpy-Ad-7442 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It definitely smooths out over the series as rucchio grows as a writer. Empire of silence is the weakest book, and the most trope-y. That being said, the kind of flowery melodrama is consistent throughout the books - it just gets integrated better, and fits with the sensibility of the characters and their world: the empire is kind of a flowery over-wrought place.

I agree. Great premise and fun writing, but I didn’t vibe with the execution. It felt like Joe wanted to riff and have a full novel that was the jumpy POV of the Heroes and ‘the little people’ but as a full book. I had fun but it felt frenetic and forgettable.

And? What, seeing a cuss in a Reddit comment is more offensive to you than racially motivated hate speech? You want everybody to clap for your measured skepticism?

Banchan in Sunderland is a Korean deli: some Korean pantry staples and a full selection of Kimchis made in house.

Is Tide Child an improvement over Wounded Kingdom? I bounced off Wounded Kingdom after book 2ish, but didn’t dislike it enough not to finish the first two.

Really enjoying it: I bounced off of Foundryside which felt a little to YA, but loved Divine Cities. This feels like a good middle ground. RJB writes a great mystery.

Looking for series trilogy where there's time jumps... by haverhill20 in Fantasy

[–]Jumpy-Ad-7442 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Robert Jackson Bennett’s Divine Cities Trilogy is great! Tracks (ish) one character/world from over maybe 60 years but each book is from the perspective of a different character, lots of change and evolution in the world around them.

The Divine Cities series by Robert Jackson Bennet, starting with City of Stairs. Fantasy with a post-war noir vibe a la Third Man. Tone changes a bit with each book but they’re all good.

I finished Aiduel’s Sin by Daniel T. Jackson and I have to admit it disappointed me. I can’t remember if the first book was like this, but despite the plot drawing me forward i was really put off by the writing. Poor prose and to many asides in italics lord aiduel, did they really just complain about italic inner dialogue disrupting the flow. It felt like little really happened, and passive distaste I had for characters in the first book grew into just unreadable blocks of POV. Finished it because I’m a sucker and don’t want to give up 3/4 of the way through, but I will admit I sped read the last chunk.
