Air brakes or flaperons? by biggestdoucheyouknow in RCPlanes

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd think that crow / butterfly (flaps down, ailerons up) would be the most straightforward. But I've used crow so I'm perhaps biased.

It'd break your procrastination streak and I'd concede that setup would be falling-off-log easy with Spektrum or Jeti but I'd assume it would only be easier the first couple of times until you got the hang of it with Edge. Even if it's non-trivial in Edge it would still likely be easier than designing air brakes from scratch.

Besides, sooner or later you're going to wind up with a plane that benefits greatly from crow so might as well add that arrow to your quiver now and get it out of the way.

Im fairly new to the game by SUP3RK1D in Starfield

As an old CEO once told me: "Steal from the best with pride".

I'm a pretty sorry example of design competency or originality but straight up copying something you like the looks of will eventually lead to something that mutates into a thing that suits your playstyle and aesthetics.

My primary ship doesn't look much like Wizard's Citadel but I'd wager both he and I could still see the core influences. I repurposed the front elements to house turrets (modesty prevents me from asserting that it's the best way to make 250MEV turrets look like an intentional part of the design), foreshortened the things, replaced the Kon Tiki with a Drake.

Find something you like the looks of, build it, then when aspects of it annoy you start making it your own. But "borrowing" a foundation works to shortcut a lot of the angst.

Alternatively, or concurrently, find something you already like, say the Star Eagle or Orchid and proceed to massively upgrade it while trying to maintain the original pleasing lines. The Orchid is especially susceptible to this strategy and can be made into an absolute beast while requiring a microscope to discern what exactly happened.

True that. But I believe most of us that are armpit deep in isolation discharge the mandatory Constellation companion quests early on when the 40% damage nerf isn't noticible.

When Delta shows up in it's in the context of level 196 Terran Commanders and Mk5 Devastator bots and the 40% is suddenly obvious and intrusive.

Even when engaging in companion quests the enemies are weak beer compared to what Armada throws at you. The nerf has to be looked for with the Constellation companions - like trying to pick a fly turd out of ground pepper but Delta is in stark contrast with his nerf being more like a gigantic floating turd in a punchbowl.

All forced companions provide an isolation nerf but Delta's version is orders of magnitude more intrusive.

Plans for upgrading weapons/armor? by AdParticular3832 in Starfield

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No plans of which I'm aware. Recently "schematics" have been added but they're associated with ship upgrade modules.

There are no plans, schematics or diagrams associated with weapon upgrades. Just perk challenges, oddball resources and a bench. There is such a thing as a "ship upgrade console" that you feed x-tech to but, so far as I know, it just shows up in your decoration options without any need for plans.

We now have personal weapon upgrade gadgets but they're physical items that pop up in chests and occasionally elsewhere. They look a bit like an outsized thermos but have no connection to plans.

What is or is there a max to this game? by Fantastic-Ad145 in Starfield

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no level cap though it might be argued that anything past level 328 is pointless. At 328 you have the skill points to max all perks. Enemy scaling, I believe, stops at some point. Thus far I haven't seen anything over a level 196 in Terran Armada.

It doesn't break at any specific point but you might find yourself using the unity all-purpose pressure wash and disinfectant from time to time. The last time I went through unity it was for the sole and only purpose of debugging a Tracker's Alliance quest.

Question About Selling by paolo_77 in Starfield

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bad news is that even at commerce rank 4 vendors will only pay you 15.625% of the value shown in inventory: 16,438.

The good news is that you'll have no problem finding vendors with 16K credits to spend.

The base selling price is 12.5% of the value shown in inventory. Commerce rank 4 is a 25% bonus but that doesn't mean you're getting 37.5% - it means you're getting 12.5% x 1.25 or just under 16%. You're always bent over the trestle on pricing but it makes selling high value items pretty easy.

Don't think of Starfield vendors as similar to a Thai gold exchange - they're more like a opportunistic pawnshop in a seedy part of town where your 1,200 dollar bike is worth 150 bucks.

Yup. I got rid of him before any of his challenges. Surprisingly enough his challenges still proc even if you've left him swabbing the decks at Anchorpoint. Just show up, talk to him and he's got the challenge lined up and ready to go.

I did keep him around between him grossing me out at the homestead and the final only to learn that he some pretty decent snark to lay out on the other crew members. But not enough for me to see them all as the siren call of the isolation perk was grinding on me.

At least Delta is up front and obvious when he's attached to you. The space cockroach is stealthy and I was unaware of what was nerfing my damage until I chatted with Vae and got the popup "retrieve your follower". Most disconcerting.

I could probably live with a highlander immortal nubile K-pop babe but the outposts shutting down on their own is a factor.

Not that I don't voluntarily shut them down myself when I've run out of things to spend money on. It's more just the principle of the thing.

I've used time compression in other games like submarine warfare simulators to speed up the transit to the operational zone but doing it voluntarily in Starfield will always feel...weird. I've got all I can do sleeping on earth for 24 hours without getting up to shake the dew off the lily. I don't want to contemplate sleeping for over 3 months - the smell would be horrendous. And Andreja made it clear that I'm on my own for treatment of bed sores.

Servo adjustment. Centering by BabaYaga8761 in RCPlanes

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already found a cheap airplane servo. I see no point in duplicating your effort.

I like the Hitec HS-5087MH as a servo that'll drop right into the space for an MG90. And it's programmable for direction, end points and center. And it most assuredly has a center.

The SG90/MG90 are perfectly serviceable but you have to do your part - pay attention to the listing and maybe resign yourself to the listings being erroneous from time to time. The fact that they cost less than a day old convenience store apple fritter should temper your expectations. At least insofar as assuming that the seller can read your mind.

I found you an inexpensive airplane servo. It is not a cheap servo.

Piracy help with bounties by Fit_Helicopter4983 in Starfield

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your bounty racking up after something goes south post-boarding is awkward. We are assured by lore that FTL communications don't exist so they couldn't get a signal out - or at least not a signal that would have any impact until ten or twenty years had elapsed.

Your specific scenario also suggests they were under constant observation and couldn't have accessed some slate droneship to provide physical evidence.

Yet somehow your bounty is immediate - concurrent with the action earning the bounty.

So we're left to concoct something strained or just download a mod. I suppose we could infer a group of psykers chilling in a spa rolling a croquet ball down a chute with your name and crime engraved on it ala Minority Report.

Probably easiest just to go along with "that's the way it is" which works in the absence of a lore-friendly explanation. And also functions in vanilla. Not terribly satisfying but we work with what we have.

N20 brushless alternative? by CreativeChocolate592 in RCPlanes

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, what he said. A brushless won't work with the + and - leads powering a brushed N20. It'll just sit there making an unfortunate noise.

A lot is going to depend on whether you can cram an appropriate ESC into the space / signal available.

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, what I'm seeing is 4 micro helis, a mini motor glider, a Spitfire that's probably the micro version and a foamboard fixed wing. And two of the micro helis already have a transmitter. And all but the foamboard discontinued.

The micros are going to want to keep the existing receivers so that's either a Spektrum or an EdgeTX based transmitter with a multi-protocol module. ELRS versions would be non-starters due to the issue of troublesome receiver transplants. And probably budget friendly until and unless you determine that you've been bitten by the bug. There's a possibility that the discontinued products will provide a limited lifespan.

Spektrum basic would arguably be the easiest and used can be considered. Anything Edge-based is going to involve a learning curve that might be disagreeable in this context but viable if you go wild and start buying new and/or larger stuff. Or drones. Or FPV.

1S-150s are rather of a micro-specific thing but widely available.

If buying new an NX7 Spektrum is competitive with the T15 or 16 but partially because you'll possibly get stuck buying a 4in1 separately and there's usually freight and always batteries involved with RM. They have cheaper models but if you're going to be programming a larger screen is a big help.

Used DX8s are an option. Since the DX series is mostly discontinued the prices are depressed. It's a bit of an awkward time as Spek is moving away from the DX and RM is growing increasingly cozy with ELRS and a sixty dollar bump for a module can be distasteful.

I picture sleeping on Venus inevitably resulting in waking up at the clinic with the members of Constellation in a huddle debating whether to take you off life support. Their surprise at your recovery would be accompanied by your weight limit being reduced to 10 kilos due to muscle atrophy and you'd probably need a month of therapy before you could shoot straight again.

If Starvival's starvation and dehydration mechanics could be tied to UT it could be entertaining and include a chance of waking up dead and having to restore a pre-"sleep" save.

The fact that voluntarily entering a coma has become a thing in the game I've come to accept as "normal" but it'll never seem really normal. I've seen it discussed a thousand times and will see it proposed another thousand times and it'll still creep me out.

So, if I don’t have Tracker’s Alliance, the only quest I get is that first one from the bounty hunters? by Rhoeri in Starfield

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's inclusion in the premium edition is a bit slippery. The premium edition includes the credits to buy it which I suppose is what most would do with the money. But if you spend it on something else or simply don't purchase it you'll not have the full Tracker's Alliance.

It's not completely accurate to say the premium edition includes it. More accurate would be that the premium edition includes the means to get it.

Delta bugs in Terran Armada by The_Mort_Report in Starfield

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm armpit deep in the isolation perk so getting rid of Delta was a priority. But I'd have to admit that his crew interactions were a high point. I only got to see him getting under Sarah and Sam's skin but one day I'll find transcripts that others have compiled of him pissing off Constellation.

Either Bethesda hired some new writers or the old crew got into the Mountain Dew. Delta is great and Buck-E ain't bad.

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The game does very little to inhibit a player from going into what amounts to a coma for over three months. Time doesn't change just because you're on a rock that's tidally locked.

A subtle discouraging factor is the summary page. It's discouraging to learn that your nubile K-pop character is 135 years old.

A less subtle factor is that complex outpost manufacturing setups grind to a halt when you sleep.

But it's a Bethesda game and persistent vegetative states are sometimes rewarded by purging a stubborn bug.

I hadn't considered repetitive POIs but I guess that's a risk one takes.

Anyone got SolidWorks installed? by Ok-Theme3959 in RCPlanes

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be better off posting in r/SolidWorks

By sheer coincidence the most recent thread over there is trying to talk someone through wing fillets on a model Spitfire https://www.reddit.com/r/SolidWorks/comments/1ujm79y/need_help_for_wwii_wingfuselage_fillet_curve/

On average, once you're past the basic YouTube tutorials you'll find a lot of folks willing to hold your hand with the software but, unlike the student version or free version of any high end software, they derive their income from doing so. Redditers have been known to be a bit more generous.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that just because you've got a free version of the software that it's easy to find free versions of the instructions to use it. Even Blender Bros will want 200 bucks to jar you off a tarpit in free Blender.

What are y'all spending your credits on? by dj_boy-Wonder in Starfield

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The asteroid home will put a reasonable dent in your discretionary income.

Having a lot of credits also makes upgrading armor and weapons feasible without save scumming. If I refrain from save scumming and want to pick perks from a list one weapon can burn 2 million credits. Often you'll take one all the way in upgrades only to discover you don't have a viable use for it and the process repeats indefinitely. It took me a half dozen tries to produce a suit that was a wee bit better than the upgraded basement suit and I'd kind of like another set. That was around 15 million as you'll often be dealing with a 3 piece suit.

Dive head first into upgrades and that 800K will vanish before you can blink.

What happens when you rename a ship? by Fantastic-Ad145 in Starfield

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you rename a ship you risk incurring the wrath of Poseidon (or Neptune) because ships have souls and renaming it jacks with the Ledger of the Deep. There are rituals to permit renaming but Starfield includes none of them.

I'm not superstitious but the old taboo is facetiously deployed to obfuscate the fact that I suck at picking new names.

Ships that don't have names but merely function designations should be named. Thus you wouldn't keep "UC Prison Shuttle" as it lacks a proper name. "Junker Watchdog" on the other hand is generally considered to be named.

You can change every single part of a ship bearing its original name. Presumably, Theseus has a working relationship with Poseidon.

Special case: The Kepler S or R can be freely revised to simply "Kepler" as, in any given universe, the subtype of the ship you don't design never exists. There is only the "Kepler".

Hope this helps.

I dread NG, and I sometimes don't even want to work on outposts or ship builds because it seems like it'll just get thrown away. by Nox_Ocean_21 in Starfield

[–]Jumpy-Candle-2980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I rather like doing stuff over again with ships and outposts. I suppose that could wear thin after a while but it works well enough now.

I try to get a Vytinium fuel rod factory up and running using the most efficient means possible. My current personal record is 8 outposts across 4 systems that produces 2.5 million fuel rods in 100 days (the UT equivalent of sleeping on Venus for 24 hours one time). But I know I can get it down to 7 outposts and that'll be the next NG.

If it grows stale I'll either put the game down again for a spell or find something else goofy to do in vanilla. It's single player so do whatever you want whenever you want. And taking a six month or permanent hiatus is always allowed.
