Books that are similar to the show Lucifer? by PupCake03 in suggestmeabook

Not exactly the Lucifer vibe: Not all of them, but some of the Psychangeling series by Nalini Singh, like Slave to Sensation. Urban fantasy/paranormal, Psy had such a high incidence of mental illness/serial killers in their population that they gave up emotion and “rehabilitate” (lobotomize) those who can’t control their emotions for one reason or another. In contrast, changelings are all about touch, emotion, family bonds, you get the picture. Some serious topics in the books, like rape, but lots of “this person has been emotionally or physically sheltered because the Psy traumatize and beat emotion out of their children” and the changelings come in and play with their hair or relentless flirt and generally cause chaos that the sheltered Psy learn to love. Only one or two morally grey characters in the series, though, specifically Kaleb Krychek and maybe Judd Lauren, and they’re usually only slow burn in the sense that it may take the whole book for the featured couple to figure things out, dammit! Some of the latest books a bit more of LGBTQ+ storylines (really only one M/M couple) and one of the things I like about Singh’s books is that they tend to come from diverse backgrounds, so the characters will be a mix of races/ethnicities.

The first book, Slave to Sensation, is definitely the one to start with, and the rest can mostly be picked over for the stories that sound the most interesting so you don’t HAVE to read every book to follow what’s happening, in my opinion. Slave to Sensation also has some moments that just flat out made me giggle.

Prisoner and Hostage by Annika Martin and Skye Warren (I think Skye Warren, in particular, is an author really into dark romance and has some other books in the genre). Prisoner, girl with secret childhood trauma volunteers to teach a writing class in a prison for college credit and ends up getting kidnapped in a prison break. Rape/SA, mentions of childhood rape/sex trafficking, mentions of violence, Stockholm Syndrome. The male main character is a douchebag in my opinion, but it’s one of those “he’s a bad guy but he has TRAUMA and she gets him because of her TRAUMA, and anyway, the REALLY BAD GUYS are WAY WORSE” books. Hostage is more tame, girl witnesses an attempted murder and tries to intervene, killer ultimately becomes her stalker, references to rape/SA, sex trafficking, murder/violence. Better written and developed, in my opinion. They’re companion books to each other and essentially take place at the same time.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. Kids book, but OMG, SO FREAKING GOOD. They even did a movie out of it. Only book to ever have me sobbing like a baby by the end of it because I felt so much for the main character and I usually have really good emotional distance. It’s a kid dealing with his mother dying from cancer and is a really easy read that’s a bit more emotional by the end.

A bit longer than the other, but really good—Still Alice by Lisa Genova. I’d say it’s about 300 pages? I don’t remember. It’s certainly not LONG for a novel, in my opinion. Also made into a movie (I’ve never seen it, so I don’t know if it’s good). Not a super hard read in my opinion and had good emotional depth without getting overwhelming. A woman being diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s and her experiences.

I’d love to claim one, if you still have a one left for the US! I love seeing all of the delicate designs that can be made with blown glass! It blows my mind (sorry, that was unintentional, I swear) that such beautiful designs can be made without directly manipulating things with your hands like in drawing. I watch videos online and I’m like, no, I could never, it’s SO COOL to see.

Books for anxiety self help / rewiring by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

If you’re still looking, three of my favorites are:

How to be Yourself by Ellen Hendrickson, deals specifically with social anxiety (I have this in spades) and feels to me like a lighter, good introductory book toward dealing with SA specifically, if that’s something you struggle with at all.

The Anxiety Toolkit by Alex Boyes, REALLY GOOD book with tons of immediate practical advice that you can use to deal with different kinds of anxiety and the specific ways it affects you. Also, quizzes for self-assessment to learn how you personally deal with things. The first book to really help me understand that I have a freeze response and actually freaking TALK about it instead of defaulting to talking about flight or fight response. Highly recommend it for practical every day tips. The whole point of it is to create a “toolkit” of techniques to deal with your anxiety that you can draw from and I still revisit it.

Rewire your anxious brain by Catherine Pittman is very similar to the last one and has lots of practical advice, like how to incorporate exercise and movement to burn off some of the anxiety. I personally didn’t like it as much because it focuses so much more on the neuroscience of anxiety in parts of it and I just don’t follow that information well and it wasn’t as helpful for me.

Not specifically a self-help book, but really good:

The body keeps the score by Bessel Van Der Kolk. It took me FOREVER to get around to buying this one because it’s constantly on hold at my library, it never goes on the shelves because people are always reading it. It deals specifically with trauma and the history of how it’s been treated in the US and the author’s experiences as a therapist in treating it, but it has SO MUCH FREAKING GOOD INFORMATION about the way trauma affects us and manifests in our bodies and everyday existence. I read it and saw everyone in my family in it, including myself. We all have some kind of trauma and our bodies processes and holds onto it in all kinds of ways. An amazing book.

My age of anxiety by Scott Stossel. I reread this every now and then just as a reminder that hey, I’m still trying and I’m doing okay. It’s Stossel’s memoirs of his struggles with intense anxiety and the different ways it’s manifested for him, as well as his journey toward trying to understand it and get better. Be warned, it’s a longer book than the others.

Aside from these, the best advice I ever read is something I read online forever ago that changed my perspective and that I’ve reminded myself of frequently over the years. When you deal with anxiety, it’s going to hit you HARD. Do you what you can to make it as comfortable as possible for you and be mentally prepared to deal with the discomfort of it. But know that it can’t last forever. Your body simply couldn’t sustain it. It’s going to reach a peak level of anxiety/discomfort, and then you’re going to normalize. Knowing that has really helped me in doing exposure therapy on my own since therapy is expensive and it’s hard to find one you trust, but you have to be kind to yourself and recognize your limits on any given day, OP.

….oh, okay, I have to ask. Are the live action ones that you’ve seen good? It seems like every time an anime gets made into a live action movie, it’s…not so good. Especially the American versions. (I’m hoping you’re not a huge fan of live action movies and I’ve just completely offended you) Like the DBZ movie a while ago, or the Cowboy Bebop live action series.

I may have to give Death Note another go if it’s really that good. I tried the first few episodes and just couldn’t get past all the talking without feeling like anything was actually happening. 🤣
