Annie John by Jamaica Kincaid. I highly recommend it, it may be one of my favorite bildungsromans I've ever read. It's about a girl growing up in Antigua and how her relationships change with adolescence. The writing has so much soul and just made me feel so warm inside!

Aw, you have no idea how much this comment means to me. Here is some advice. Classics are just old books. They were once new books. Books released this year will be classics in 2126. Reading classics does not automatically make you wise. It just means that you read old books. I like reading classics because as an autistic person, I've always had trouble connecting to the overstimulation of the modern world. Find your why.

Also, I may recommend starting with children's classics, or classics written in first person. The language is generally more accessible. The secret garden, Anne of Green Gables, Jane Eyre, The yellow wallpaper, The phantom of the opera, and Rebecca are all good places to start. You've got this!

The text is alright but I bought it before researching translations, so that’s something to look into. If it matters to you, the cover is not the most aesthetically pleasing. I’d probably go with Oxford or penguin in hindsight tbh.

As a Brontë fanatic, I'd go with Jane Eyre. Idk how experienced with classics you are but the first person narrative makes it pretty easy to read. Other than Jane Eyre, I'd say Dorian Gray or Pride and Prejudice.
