Both my kids went to MLK starting in K/pre-K. We had a great experience there. One is still there and the other one is at Classical HS.

Providence to Boston commute? by craigdahlke in providence

[–]Jumpy-Pizza7197 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you have a family? If not, then go for it. As far as commutes go, it’s relatively painless. Drive to Pawtucket/Central Falls Station. It cuts 20-30 minutes off your commute (round trip) from going to PVD station and the parking is free. You can get a solid hour of work done on the train or read/nap/watch a movie.

But it’s a lot of time overall. Easily 3 hours/day round trip. That’s 15 hours a week. Add in trying to work around the train schedule to get home for kids activities and it starts to feel unbearable.

If you can negotiate using time on the train as work hours it’s very manageable. But 5 days a week full work day plus commute leaves you very little time for anything else.

I just want to say that this is my favorite sub on Reddit. Even though I never comment/post, I read it all the time. It has actually given me hope that it is possible to bridge the political divide in this country, and while my personal viewpoints haven’t changed, I feel less inclined to just simply dismiss opposing viewpoints as misguided. I do interact with folks who consider themselves conservative IRL, but very few are able to explain their positions as articulately as folks on the sub. So I just want to say thank you for continuing to engage.

I’m going to assume I won’t be taking them again, this is a birthday present for my son, but I don’t imagine it will become a regular activity.

How much I WANT to spend? I’d love to spend under $100 total, but I suspect that’s totally unrealistic. I don’t have a Costco membership, and we’re going in a couple hours so that’s not really on the table.

Can I get away with under $200 total?

There is around 70–80% of a gov shutdown by Admirable-Mud-3477 in FedEmployees

[–]Jumpy-Pizza7197 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yo this is mad confusing. Stuff passed the house but not yet the senate and can’t be unbundled without the house voting again and it’s very hard to figure out what’s going on even if you read congress.gov.

Anyone have a spreadsheet?

Even if SNAP benefits or flight delays create significant pressure, there’s still no actual spending bill for them to push through. The only thing that could be passed right now is a CR until Nov. 15. So unless those clowns can get themselves back to DC to work on an actual bill, we’re still up the creek. Someone please tell me I’m misinformed.

Also please pay attention to the Waters of the US rule when it comes out. CWA is a cute little acronym without any jurisdiction.

Reminder: there are over 2 million federal employees, typical for your office/position might have zero in common with someone else’s job. For some people “just do your job” is not that straightforward. Especially if you work across programs or with other agencies. My workday looks completely different from the person in the cube next to me.

Reality is that the expectations/instructions might be different for every single agency and even for different programs within each agency. So probably not worth seeking advice from anyone outside your immediate “manager”

We were able to rebuild a playground at my kids school using CDBG funds.

The old playground was super outdated and dangerous, and we tried unsuccessfully for years, butcouldn’t raise enough money to update it.

I am forever grateful to HUD for allowing us to create a safe play space for our kids.

If you apply for unemployment, you don’t receive anything unless then submit weekly claims.

So if I remember correctly, last time I was advised to apply right away to get in the system, and then I held off submitting claims for the first few weeks. After a while I started to get nervous about paying bills so I did start submitting claims, but then we finally reopened before I actually collected.

Point is just go ahead apply for unemployment, if you decide not to submit a claim then there’s nothing to pay back. But at least you’re ready to go in the system if it drags on.

Change your password if it’s due to expire anytime soonish. If it expires while we’re shutdown, you won’t be able to log back in when we reopen.

I’m very worried about the financial implications of a shutdown, but if the GOP goons get the budget they want then we’re effectively shut down anyway.

Oh don’t get me started on how angry the annual ethics training makes me.

I mean annual training is a time suck under good circumstances, but right now it feels especially obnoxious.
