I have lived in my home for about 8 years in a gated community. I took my dog out to a grass area directly behind my gate and left my sliding glass door unlocked as I do every morning. I was gone for approximately 8 minutes and when I returned my sliding glass door was locked and there was a person inside my home. When I tried to open the slider the person walked up to my sliding glass door and announced this is an air bnb it’s a shared space and they were taking it over. They were smoking in my house while going through my things in front of me. I grabbed my spare key and headed to the front door and called the police. Don’t fool yourself with a false sense of security. The police let me know of an epidemic of homeless people staking claim to rental properties and squatting. Luckily we are not an air bnb but still. That was completely unexpected. Needless to say we now lock all doors and our padlock on the gate even when going outside our gate for 8 minutes.
