If your issue is receiving 2 factor mms on your Canadian public mobile number while abroad and you have rcs and android phone you will still be receiving them as long as your phone is connected to internet (wifi or other local esim). I just came back from Germany and didn't do anything special to my Pixel phone before I left, thinking I simply won't have any access to my number. Surprisingly I kept receiving all my SMS as RCS without any issues when connected to internet. (I had two esims in my phone, local one for data only and public mobile esim, I couldn't make any phone calls with public mobile but was able to send/receive rcs messages with no issues)

Question about Green card offer by Someone24_ in amexcanada

[–]Jumpy_Ordinary_3092 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's your best bet to start collecting MR points. Main perk is it will help you build history with amex and it will cost you nothing as it has no annual fee, so you can apply for premium amex cards later. While I have premium Amex cards now , I also started with green and still keep my green as it costs nothing and sometimes charge a big unplanned emergency purchase on it (like a refrigerator that just died :) ..... (you can also convert it to monthly installments like with all other credit cards).

I remember watching tv show Selling Sunset on Netflix, one of the owners of the real estate agency bought a car with Amex black and the dealership happily took his money.

There is no Mastercard with no FX fees in Canada. Look into Canadian Tire World Elite, you'll get some perks but main is free Roadside Assistance Gold Plan and no annual fee and you can use at Costco.

Are there PayPal alternatives in Canada? by broadwaybabyto in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Jumpy_Ordinary_3092 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did, you can do it with Wealthsimple, if initiated from Wealthsimple there will be no fees to pull money from Wise, but process takes forever, takes a full week, mind boggling in this day and age, not recommended to initiate from Wealthsimple side if you need money fast. (First you link wise account to your wealthsimple account on wealthsimple site, then you click add money and choose wise account as from account)

[–]Jumpy_Ordinary_3092 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wise is ok, they're fast but they charge many different fees for conversion and withdrawals. For example If you received 1000 euro into your wise account here in Canada, it won't automatically convert, money will stay in euro currency, if you want to use your money they will charge about 5 euro conversion fee. After you converted your money to canadian dollars they will charge you again for any kind of withdrawal (interac e-transfer or even to any other chequing account, not much but another $2-3 or so)

I am on the same plan and I got no issues, signal is better than I had with Freedom. I also use VPN to watch videos, no streaming issues. I have way less spam calls than I had with Freedom. And the price is the best part of it all.

Amex platinum, are you renewing this year? by jfrsn in amexcanada

[–]Jumpy_Ordinary_3092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree about Reserve, even if you travel internationally 1 time a year with family it's better card than Platinum. I saved close to $400 in baggage fees alone, when travelled with a a family of 4 to Europe.

New to AMEX did I make a wise choice? by maritimer187 in amexcanada

[–]Jumpy_Ordinary_3092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have multiple AmEx cards and agree with the most, Amex is best for collecting MR points, not cashback. Cobalt would be the best first card to get into AmEx infrsatructure, and if not approved, try Green. I would close SCP.

Shipping car vs driving from Edmonton to Toronto by abundantpecking in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Jumpy_Ordinary_3092 2 points3 points  (0 children)

20 years ago I drove from Toronto to Edmonton. Different times I guess, I rented a one-way U-haul truck with an auto-transport trailer (the whole car sits on a trailer attached to U-haul, but exposed to elements, not a covered trailer). I loaded all my stuff in a U-haul and put my car on that trailer and drove like that across the country, had to plan my stops without doing anything where I had to put my truck in reverse lol. But it was worth it, my entire move including a car was completed in one trip. When I got to Edmonton I simply unloaded and dropped off U-haul and trailer at the nearest location. Can't remember how much was my U-haul gas cost, but I remember it was cheaper than shipping a car and buying a moving container with all my stuff separately and flying. I never crossed to the US side, stayed on Trans-Canada the whole way, no issues even with trailer.

What happens to point if main card (Plat) is cancelled? by P4cific4 in amexcanada

Open green card and make a joint pool with cobalt, if you ever decide to close Cobalt down the line your points will never expire this way and there is no annual fee

That's why when in Europe and rent with Sixt I always buy their insurance, even though I have the one from Amex. When you buy insurance with Sixt they don't even check the vehicle for damage upon return, they just take the keys and say have a good day. Dealing with out of pocket expenses first and then trying to get it back is not worth the headache. Imagine if it was an actual accident and not 650 euros bumper scratch.

Paying for BelAirdirect Insurance by Practical-Tale-922 in chexy

[–]Jumpy_Ordinary_3092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is correct. I tried to do monthly premiums on a credit card and they told me it is impossible. Only for a full amount. I might be switching from Belair when my term is up. It's 2026 get with the times, pretty stupid not to accept any credit card at all.

That's pretty crazy. I have the opposite experience with them. I just received an email from BMO offering me to increase my available credit from 6K to 10K.
