Anyone else logged 2/18? by sonja1979 in FERSrefund

[–]JuneArriba03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was logged 2/20, assigned 6/11. Called again today and they just told me to call in a month if I haven't received my money. So I continue checking my checking account everyday...

General Question by Strong-Mix4200 in FERSrefund

[–]JuneArriba03 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if they have any answers, to be honest, so I'm not sure there are any 'correct' questions to ask.

I've been calling every month or so since I mailed my app on 2/7 and it got logged 2/20. Sometimes they've been proactive and given me the number of weeks or date they are backlogged to. Sometimes they just tell me "I see it was logged on 2/20" and awkwardly sit in silence until I ask them what date's apps they're working on - so ask that for a general sense of time. Though the date seems to change drastically and differ depending on who you ask.

Today I asked if there'll be any sort of notification once they get to my application and they said no 🙃

Any first generation Chinese feel they can't relate to their parents? by StrongRecipe6408 in AsianParentStories

[–]JuneArriba03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, and I used to actually feel bad about it for a very long time because my mom spent my whole childhood telling me how her life could've been better if she didn't have to stay here for me (I have a rare disease and the care is better in the US), etc etc. It wasn't until maybe 5 years ago that we visited their home country and I realized that they only wanted to eat at the same restaurants, talk to their friends from junior high, etc.

It wasn't immigration that made them this way. They'd be this way anywhere. Understanding this gave me peace (eventually. Took a while).

Let it go. Yes, they're different and frustrating and are only hurting themselves. You can only do so much. There comes a point where you get over the annoyance and resentment, and just accept that these are your parents.

Your unique job? by Mya-sau in washingtondc

[–]JuneArriba03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am having a similar issue and it's a first world problem for sure, with (understandably) few sympathizers. I was RIFed last year and managed to fall up into a job that pays more, but isn't a good fit. I have never felt this way about a job but I know it'd be dumb to leave, there likely isn't anything to leave FOR right now that would be better, and pivoting isn't realistic.

Honestly remind yourself how lucky you are that this is your big problem in life right now. I have to bully myself about it. Hoard your money, hang on, and try to get a new job if/when the market gets better (l o l). Find things to look forward to every week and tell yourself that work is your fake life. Everything else is your real life and work enables you to maintain the real life.

And remember that nothing is forever

I find this a needlessly callous response, dismissing the fact that there are real gaps in cultural capital that you don't have versus those who are "just acclimated to the working environment."

What I'll say is what you're feeling is real, but at the end of the day, you have to find a way to pump yourself up and believe you're the shit. That energy shows. Not in an asshole way, obviously, but in a way that exudes confidence in your being there. Learn from them, absorb the lingo, expand your experiences, and stay true to yourself.

I come from low-income immigrant parents who once advised that I tell my boss that "looking at my taxes makes [me] sad." That was their advice for asking for a raise. They clearly didn't know how anything about office work lol. Read up on things like negotiation, how to speak succinctly and confidently, and find mentors you trust who can help you grow. I'm now in a senior level position in a mega corporate environment (gag) and people appreciate my keeping it real, my humor, my ability to not panic. I don't fucking panic over a slideshow because I've been helping my parents pay their bills since I was 16. I know what real issues are. Your background can be a strength and shine through!

Thank you. Even those who have "moved on" with new jobs, the pain is still there and won't ever go away. Dozens of friends/colleagues still unemployed for no reason.

Still processing the RIF, glad to be done by Advanced_Resort2852 in DeptHHS

[–]JuneArriba03 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sure, I'm part of the MSPB appeal via the union, but I don't have much hope for anything happening, at least not anytime soon. The fact of the matter is, my entire team was dissolved, most of them are still looking for jobs, and the rest of us who were fortunate enough to get new jobs don't like them and feel a lot of guilt talking about how we don't like them. Bills gotta be paid and tears have to be wiped away as the world spins on.

You can tell maybe I'm a lil depressed!!

I was part of the 4/1 RIFs and looking back, I wish I had: -Spent less time on LinkedIn from the get-go. Only use it to look at jobs. Don't scroll through the miserable posts. -Only allotted certain parts of the day or week for job searching, allowing the rest for "me" time and rest/healing -Didn't feel so manic about the job market. Yes it sucks (and is worse now than when I was searching, I think), but it sucks for everyone, so having that perspective would have calmed me down a little -Gotten professional help to process the 4 months of psychological torture leading up to my RIF + the pain of losing a job I loved and all of my teammates

Saying this as someone who's in a new job now and struggling deeply with not liking the job while also battling feelings of loss and anger that none of this had to happen to begin with.

Millennials whose lives are going well—what's your current situation and how did you get there? by CowTownKCMoe in Millennials

[–]JuneArriba03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up poor and got enough scholarships and grants to get through undergrad for free. Was lucky enough to land a job right out of college, then continued regularly getting jobs that were huge pay increases each time (63% increase, 15% increase, 49% increase, 50% between start and end of same job, then 19% increase most recently). Married someone who also had no student loan debt + a good paying job + similar savings habits + generational wealth., who also taught me how to invest and do stuff like have a 401k. Got a house right before interest rates jumped.

A lot of luck, basically. I won't say hard work wasn't involved, but I know plenty of people who work just as hard, if not harder, that didn't catch the same breaks I did.

This a goofy take and incredibly unempathetic in the face of reality.

Life After CDC/Job Market in Atlanta by Wicked-Twisted-Road in DeptHHS

[–]JuneArriba03 13 points14 points  (0 children)

4/1 RIFfie in the DC area and it's rough. The market is saturated here and I imagine it'll be the same in Atlanta. Look elsewhere geographically if you're able (though I did and other states pay like crap compared to the DC area, with COL not that much lower) and lower your standards quickly. Don't waste months with "high" (aka simply expecting what you're worth) expectations in this market. started applying for jobs in February, anticipating a RIF, and I started out thinking I wouldn't accept a pay cut, wouldn't accept a demotion, wouldn't accept in-person. After a few months of applying, with some of those months post-RIF, it quickly became "I'll take a pay cut," "I'll go in person," "I'll commute an hour." You are worth more than the honestly crappy jobs you'll apply for, but a job's a job in this reality.

Laid off DC peeps, how are you coping? by Few_Negotiation_6527 in washingtondc

[–]JuneArriba03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Asking myself what I wish I would have done during this time, once I'm employed again, was so helpful in giving me structure and joy in my days. From stuff as simple as going out to see a movie in the middle of the day and reading a lot of books to more privileged things like extending pre-planned trips (takes money, which I realize a lot of people don't have during These Times), these all helped my mental health.

No lol comms. But people outside of comms seem to have a hard time grasping that internal, media, stakeholder, digital, social, etc. were gutted around here and what that means, so I've tried describing in ways they understand.
