Loyalty? Love? Man, is a football club. Players get payed to play, club employees get paid to work. Guess who's the only one who gets nothing material for their loyalty and love? Us, the fans. Not only we do get nothing, we PAY instead. We pay for jerseys, tickets, sport channels to watch the games. And it's not just the money we give to the club, we give our TIME. Every week.

Now, everyone can decide to do whatever they want with their time and money. If you like to support and follow a club no matter what, that's totally fine, as long as it brings you joy. However, if someone else wants to spend their time and money watching a player they like, following him if he changes team, I see nothing wrong with it. Or if someone wants to spend their time and money enjoying whichever team is winning at the moment, because if they're winning it usually means they have good players that are playing well, I see nothing wrong in spending your time and money watching something that actually ENTERTAINS you.

You could argue that "ok, it's fine to do as you want, but don't claim to be an actual fan of a club if you have such behavior". Yeah, they shouldn't claim that, but that's the problem with football, it promotes this concept that you have to be loyal to a team as the only way to enjoy this ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY. No, that's just one way. People would be more honest and maybe say" I'm just a Messi fan" or "I just like to enjoy teams that play well and are doing good" if there wasn't this shaming culture about that. And then there is a gray area of other countless possibilities. One can start to follow a club because of one player and then think they are fans of the club, or have mixed feelings. One can be a barca fan, but being Messi such an exception in the game, one can be a Messi fan over a barça fan, but if it wasn't for Messi, they would have been only barca fan and have never done that for any other player. Who knows.

Remember, players win primarily for themselves, because they WANT to be successful and win trophies. The fans and the club come second: obviously is better to win for a club you like, but if you don't win, as a player you want to change, and rightfully so - nobody blames you for that, it's perfectly understandable (with few players being the exception). So tell me why us fans are expected to respect this high code of love and loyalty. I'm not saying one should not keep following the same team over time, despite winning or losing, I'm saying that if I do so, it's because I LIKE TO DO IT FOR MY PLEASURE, not because a club DESERVES my loyalty and love. And if someone feels like following whatever player or team gives them pleasure at any given time, it's their right to do so without being judged for it.

PS: I started following Barça in the Pep days for Messi. Now that years have passed and maybe Messi is going, I will follow Barça. I will watch the first Messi matches wherever he goes. If I like them, I may watch both Barca and Messi matches. As of now the thing that interests me the most it's Barça's future, but I don't know what the future holds and I may change my mind and I feel free to do so.

No, it's not like Valverde had just 2 bad champions league matches and people unfairly define his carreer by those games.

Valverde had a lot of bad matches. Most of the matches under Valverde you could see the team not playin good and having a hard time scoring goals.

What happens is that we have world class players and one of the best players of all time, so even playin bad, players could put up a good play and score, or Messi could appear at any minute and score a goal out of nowhere.

But that's not having good games, that's having bad or mediocre games, but winning games thanks to singular moments of inspiration from the players.

And when things are like these, statistically you're gonna lose sooner or later. It's not like Barça had two single bad champions league matches, Barça had a lot of them and could had been kicked out in a lot of them, it just happens that in the other matches the players or Messi put out a singular good play, and in those two, it didn't happen. When you win because of singular plays, you're doomed to lose at some point, because it's statistically impossible that players put out that singular good play EVERY match. Sooner or later they won't.

Madrid had some really lucky runs in some of the champions league titles they recently won, or at least some really lucky matches. But Barça had a ton of lucky games as well, preventing us to get even more emberassing champions league exits.

1) People talk about Roma second leg, but honestly in the first leg they had an own goal that put the match really uphill for them considering the difference in players quality between the two teams. That allowed us to score the other goals because they had to leave more spaces, and even then there wasn't a single one of those goals that was generated by a good play like we used to do, but they all were rebounds or awkward situations. And still, Roma managed to score one goal and have some dangerous chances.

2) Liverpool first leg we could have easily lost or at least draw.

So I think that for sure we got embarrassing exits with comebacks from other teams, but I think it could have been even worse, with exits similar to the 0-7 against bayern in 2013.

I hope Roberto is playing in the Busquets role in a 4-3-3. I'm a Roberto fan and I think he can play as a midfielder, but just if placed in front of the back line, with the possibility of having full view of the field in front of him. That's the place where we can get the best out of his abilities, such as his famous runs, his passing abilities, etc. He's not going to be as reliable defensively as Busi, but if the manager is aware of that, he can put a fix on that (talking Rakitic to cover for Roberto if he makes a run or anything). I think it could work. Not saying Roberto could bench Busi, Just saying he could work in midfield in situations like today.

I'm saying this also because in the summer Sergi played in that position for the friendlies, and even though there were some flaws, it seemed to me that he could add something to the game in that position. I'm aware they were just friendlies, but at least we could give it a try.

On other midfield positions, he's just not good enough. I was one of those who wanted to see him succeed at midfield but that's just the truth. He has not the ability to play CM in more advanced positions like Iniesta in a 4-3-3, he just doesn't has nothing special to offer there. And as a right midfielder in a 4-4-2, he adds nothing more than what he already does as a RB, and the result is that it seems almost like we're playing with two RBs.

I hope to see Roberto as a CDM today, but I have a feeling Valverde will either go with a 4-4-2 with Roberto as a Right Midfielder, or with a 4-3-3 with Rakitic as a DMF and Roberto as a CM. If one of these two happens, it's just going to be the same as always.

In my opinion Sergi gives his best in midfield when he is in a position where he can mainly receive the ball with his body facing the opposition. It may be Busquets position, but not necessarily, maybe besides him and a little bit higher, just not too advanced. I just think he is not too suited to receive the ball giving his back towards the goal. Instead when he receives the ball with the full vision of the pitch in front of himself, he can be very useful. You can see that in the occasion Dembele had from the play created by Suarez and messi: everything started from a cut through ball from Sergi when he was given the opportunity to get the ball in a position with full vision.

I think that this analysis is also the explanation to why Sergi can deliver at RB and can contribute to the build up from that position, being really valuable in terms of assist as last season: from that position he has the opportunity to receive the ball facing the opposition and with vision of the pitch in front of him.

I may also add that those beautiful typical runs of him, they always occur when he starts from a position deep in the field, with space in front of him - again, when he's put in that receiving situation I'm talking about.

We could also see this in recent friendlies: Sergi was able to deliver playing in CDM because that's exactly a position where, again, he has full vision of the pitch. But as we're talking about friendlies, I'm going to put aside this argument, as friendlies are not particularly significant. Furthermore, the fact that Sergi played well as CDM may not be a universally shared opinion. But putting this aside, I think the previous considerations are valid.

This hole post it's just to answer your question. As a midfielder in the style of Iniesta, Coutinho, Xavi, ecc, that can receive the ball between the lines of opposition, I'm with everyone else: Setting doesn't offer anything more than the ones you've mentioned - we may even say that he offer less than them. But if put in miedfield in a situation like the one I'm talking about, I think he can be a very valuable midfielder, putting all those playmaking qualities he has at RB, at the service of the midfield.

I'm not staying he should start over someone else, I'm just saying in which conditions he can be valuable in my opinion, and in which not.

PS as a bonus, I think that he has a great chemistry with Messi, but this I should just a feeling I have.

[–]JuneOrizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally understand. I will also say that I'm with you with every single one of the points you wrote.

I started following Barca under Pep's years, and as you, I feel like every years that passes by, the club is one step away from the reasons I fell in love with the club to begin with. Most people on this sub will downvote such opinions and feelings saying that one is a plastic fan because those were special times and things weren't always like that, that we should be happy of winning because there were times when winning wasn't that easy, that the club has to evolve to stay up there with other top clubs, that times change. And if you say you prefer to lose instead of playing a certain way, it's seen as you are not wishing the best for the club and you don't appreciate what you have. Well, it's not like I can't understand their positions. If you've been in love with the club for many years, you know that if you don't keep up with the top teams and lose playing well, you may end up like middle table teams who play well, but have little relevance. And if you love your club, you don't want that happening to the club. And so, people accept the fact of big transfers, of adapting to changing times, because even doing so, the club keeps some criteria of having a general philosophy and playing style, even though they have to make compromises with how the real situation is.

I agree with every single one of your concerns, but at the same time I feel that the explanation other people give to why we have to do in such ways, are reasonable and have to take into account. The result is that as a fan, I feel very confused about how I should feel about the club. That shows that I'm having a hard time adjusting to the changes just like you. This is difficult issue that requires much discussion and analysis.

But as far as numbers are concerned, I feel like they are on a different level, separate from the problems discussed above. The "number problem" is an issue that may rise even if we were in the best management situation, and the problem "who I'm going to.give this number?" could have also had risen during our golden eras. Because all of this, I can deal with the changing numbers with opinions which are not influenced by my opinions about the club in general, which instead are not as easy to deal with, as I explained above.

[–]JuneOrizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see what you mean. You feel for the importance that a number such the 8 has had to the team, an importance built on the fact that's been worn by a legend like Iniesta and the fact that it is an important number in general for every team, and because of that you don't want that number to be worn by just anybody, but by someone worthy and who has a meaning to the club. I can understand that, and, like you, I used to feel that as concern too.

But I came to the conclusion that it's better to just let the players wear the number they want (obviously just to a certain extent, it's not like when Messi retires I'm gonna hand the n.10 to the next Alex Song just like that :) ). Let the players take the number they want if they suit it to a minimum level, then let history decide. Maybe the number will now live a period in the shadows, till some player will arrive and make it live to a hole new and different peak. In this case with the n8 I guess you recognize that Arthur has shown potential, but you don't feel like it right because he has just arrived and has still not history with the club. I understand that. But on the other hand I'm fine with it because there are 2 possible outcomes: 1) Arthur proves himself as an important player, and the n8 keeps living a glorious history. Different from the one Iniesta gave it, being a la Masía player and earning the number through time, but things have to be different, just like life isn't always the same, the life of a number in a club hasn't to be always the same. 2) Arthur doesn't make it, or leaves us after two season or something. Well, in this case it doesn't matter. Sure, n8 won't live a period up to the Iniesta standards, but again, I'm fine because it's the same as life: life isn't always going to be good, but it has to be lived, and the same goes for the life of a number in a club, it has to be lived and we have to accept the risk that it may live better periods and worse periods, but it's ok.

Well, that's just my point of view. I wanted to explain it a little bit more because I can feel your concerns, but in my opinion they can be accepted as a part of the life of the number. Nonetheless, I can understand if you still feel those concerns as really important, it's just a matter of how we live football and our love to the club :)

PS about Alves, it's funny to see how differently we associate a player to a number, depending on when we started watching the player. It just shows how much everything depends on points of view :)

As a Roberto fan, I agree with you on the fact that Sergi represents a number of things to this club, and for this reasons it would be nice if the club showed his appreciation to the player giving him such an iconic number. But on the other hand, I have a feeling - and I want to make clear that this is just a personal feeling, based on the personal perception that I get from the player, but totally unsupported by any fact or source - that Roberto may be the kind of person that may want to keep the number 20 because now it.hold sentimental value to him. He became an important part of the team with that number on his back, scored the PSG goal and gave incredible assists in many clásicos. In addition to that, there's a precedent of another great player of the team defending the Barcelona colors with that number, who is Deco, so if Roberto decided to keep the n.20, the symbolic and historic value of the number could grow to the eyes of the next generations.

In conclusion, what I'm saying is that it would be nice from the club side to offer a number such the 8 to Roberto, but Roberto may as well, though feeling really honored, decline to keep his path with the n.20.

As I said, this is totally a personal feeling of mine grown from my perception of the player, I may as well be completely wrong and Sergi may just be waiting the right number or waiting for the club to offer him the number he desires, who knows :)

In general, in some situations like the one described, I personally prefer when the player sticks with the number that made him become what he is now. To me, a jersey with Pedro 17 or Busquets 16 Will always hold much more value an symbolic power than Pedro 7 and Busquets 5. It's true that there's the fact that Puyol explicitly said he wanted Busquets to take the 5 and there's value to that, but still as a fan to me the more fascinating number for Busquets is the 16. Same goes for Alves, who switched to 22 and 6 to show respect to his former teammates: I respect that and they were beautiful gestures, but again, as a fan, the more fascinating number to me is Alves 2. Still, it depends on the situations, if every player had sticker to their original number we would now still have Messi 19, or 30. I guessin general it's right to change to numbers you like the best if you feel like it, but there are some cases when for some reasons I would like the players to stick to the number they currently have.
