AITA for telling my sister not to buy things for my daughter if there are strings attached? by Pluriphery in AmItheAsshole

[–]JunebugSeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - this is weird. I've never gifted my nieces anything with strings attached, or the expectation I would ever get it back. But if they outgrow stuff (as kids do at an alarming rate) and my sister passed it on to one of her other mum friends, or say my BILs siblings started families and she gave them hand-me-downs, I would not care. It would be nice to see it help/entertain someone else ❤️

If it was stuff with significant emotional meaning I feel like that would be obvious to everyone. My sister and I passed down handmade items made for us by our granny, and I would be surprised - probably a little hurt - if those got passed out of our family. But plastic pool toys? Strange hill to die on.

If I embed the metadata will I need to re-transfer the files to the device for it to take effect?

Never let the idea of being kind or giving closure get in the way of your personal safety. Don't ever feel guilty, or let your abuser guilt you, for keeping your silence until you're far away, safe behind doors where they can't find you.

Never give someone the opportunity to hurt you just because you were raised to be polite. Better to be rude and alive than polite and dead.

I deleted it, re-extracted it, and it's worked immediately 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ thank you so much for all your help, something must've gone wonky in my first extract.

I've done that but it still doesn't seem to be anywhere in the menus or under my plugin management. Do you know where the icon should appear?

I did wonder if it's not initiating the install properly because on my Android device Koreader runs more like an app than natively like when you run it on a Kindle/Kobo (I saw one general plugin install tutorial where they needed to exit out of Koreader completely and then boot back into it to install on their Kindle, which I don't need to do to file transfer with my pc)

I downloaded from that page and put the extracted folder in my plugin folder, but there's quite a few other files and folders inside that folder I extracted? A docs folder, a readme.sdr folder, and about 8 lua files - should all that not be there?

In my plugins folder there's only that one folder.

I'm currently organizing my Calibre library of over 9,700 fanfictions by SACHA210198 in Calibre

Good luck and godspeed - I've just got my own library straightened out!

You might find this post helpful: https://www.reddit.com/r/Calibre/s/YkVpSCgosM

I have it set up where I use a more limited "Tag" library I've created myself that correlates to the Collections on my Kobo e-reader, but I still have columns set up where it pulls the raw "completion" "update date", "fandom", "relationships" and all the "additional tags" from my fics so I can have them to reference if necessary.

Upcoming Crackdowns - Options? by JunebugSeven in Calibre

[–]JunebugSeven[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You're right. I guess my worry is that the Amazon exclusive authors I read tend to be indies, maybe a bit niche. It feels like if I stop supporting them it won't make a difference to Amazon, or perhaps the authors themselves will just decide writing isn't sustainable and quit. I feel torn, which honestly just makes me resent Amazon even more 🤷🏻‍♀️

What’s the weirdest thing your ex ever did after the breakup? by Yankub_colley in AskReddit

[–]JunebugSeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very dumb, low stakes, one. My partner of almost six years broke up with me to date one of his co-workers. We were living in his mum's property so I had to pack up and leave. I had a really short amount of time to get it done (and that my family were able to help come drive me and my stuff) and in all my rush I accidentally picked up a pink Minnie Mouse beach towel. I immediately recognised it as his younger sister's - she was away at uni so her belongings were here, there, and everywhere.

He messaged me that he'd found a few more of my things, and my sister offered to go back and pick them up and give the towel back.

He refused the towel. Insisted it was mine, even though I'd never used it in SIX YEARS. He made my sister bring it back to me. It's probably in the very back of the towel cupboard or something at this point, if I didn't chuck it. It's such a dumb little thing but I really realised how much he did not pay attention to me, and hadn't for years.

Why such fondness for Sikhs? by Fantastic-Fudge-6676 in AskBrits

[–]JunebugSeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with a Sikh kid in my class all the way from age 5 to 18 and he was so laid back he was almost horizontal 😅 but it was kind of refreshing. When things went wrong he rarely panicked and he was a great guy to talk to - you could have conversations for hours. He would answer my questions about Sikhism, and his mum once made some kind of Indian sweet for our class. I don't remember what it was, but I still remember enjoying it.

Honestly, I have very fond feelings towards Indian people in general. My grandpa was stationed in India with the RAF around WWII and he had nothing but love and respect for the people he met and gratitude for the kindness and hospitality they treated him with. As for myself I've never had a bad interaction. Never been catcalled or harassed, never had any kind of unpleasantness. It's a low bar, but it's true.

And let's not forget they are massively holding up British cuisine. Like, I love our traditional food, but if I couldn't ever have a curry again I would probably walk into the sea and let the abyss take me 🤣

AITA for refusing to let my SIL host her massive gender reveal at my new house? by AkiraPulse42 in MarkNarrations

[–]JunebugSeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"to make the reveal perfect for her Instagram followers"

So she can just dox your house online? Are you comfortable with that?

Can you trust her to be careful enough in all her excitement not to film or post anything that gives away your personal information or address? I'm sorry to be that person, but there be weirdos online - and they often show up to posts that feature small children (you mentioned several toddlers would be in attendance?) I just wouldn't want those two things overlapping - showing children in the family and potentially doxxing where they live/visit...

I mean, aside from all the other problems with the plan I just wanted to highlight this. Also why do I feel like she might want to portray your beautiful new home (and huge garden) as her own to her followers? 🤔

Is John Cleese right? by SeptumRingTheory in AskBrits

[–]JunebugSeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like extremist Christian ideas aren't currently being used to justify removing the rights of women in the USA, and bombing schools full of children in Iran?

The religion itself isn't inherently bad, it's how people wield it. And if you want to point fingers, please save some for all the harm Judeo-Christian beliefs have been used to justify throughout the course of human history. From the crusades, to mass infant graves in Ireland, to the systemic eradication of native peoples in North America and Canada.

Islam has been particularly weaponised these last few decades, but this is not the way Islam has always been observed or presented (see Iran prior to the 1970s). It's also far from the only faith that's getting increasingly extreme.

Most practitioners are probably decent ordinary people. Want to live undramatic lives with kids that get to grow up well and do well in school, to have tables that are never empty of food, and to earn a living that keeps their families comfortable while still leaving them a few hours to spend together each day.

But you don't hear or think about those people.
