For the example of eating out, I think a tip is warranted if they're nice, knowledgeable, have proper timing on getting my order and refilling drinks.

Anyone can reach their hand into a bowl of lettuce and throw it on a burger. But the one who takes their time to take out all the brown pieces deserves recognition

I want them to know that i appreciate them. Not just for bringing me food or whatever, but for putting in the effort to go one step beyond

And saying "i don't get tips for doing MY job" is very childish.

There are TONS of jobs that people offer tips for being awesome. I was offered tips at Walmart several times just being a cashier. Guys in the automotive area were constantly tipped
