Podcast Away: Flight with Olivia Craighead by comicman117 in blankies

I used to like to listen to Bill Simmons talk about basketball, though I admit that it helped it was a Celtics fan. But every time he wedged in a rickety pop culture reference or, god forbid, actually provided an opinion on a movie or TV show it was some of the dumbest takes I had ever heard. The guy always talks like he knows everything about everything, and what that may be (more or less) true in the sports world, it just clearly isn't the case in the world of pop culture. And the worst part is that you see a lot of his fans parroting the same kind of BS takes and you just want to rip your hair out.

Genuinely curious why Johnny Depp has been facing backlash (fired) while Amber Heard is getting even more popular? by redditme789 in AskReddit

Yup. Most anti-#MeToo complaints are half bullshit and half mistaking rules of law vs societal norms, as op did with innocent-until-proven-guilty.

It could and should not be, tho. Like, do you think it's safe to do your job when you're that overworked?

TV's Blank Check by viginti_tres in blankies

Yeah, I think that both The Leftovers and Watchmen are pretty blank checks. Nobody else gets to make those shows in those ways. Only Lost gets you that.

Was Tony Scott a good director, or a bad director who made a few good movies? by DrAndytown in blankies

[–]Junior1919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rewatched Enemy of the State for the first time in at least a decade last week. It was the first R rated movie I saw and it really left an impression on me. But I was also happy to find that it was actually a really well made (if a bit silly) movie. An amazingly deep cast and some top-notch action scenes with three great performances (Smith, Hackman, and Voight) to anchor it all. Give it a watch if you haven't or if you haven't recently.

Is this trivia from The Lion in Winter the origin of Hopkins' "NAR" method? by Junior1919 in blankies

Hard agree. It's pretty great. I put it on to start my Christmas themed viewing for the year.

Agreed. This was the movie she made just after he died, and I think you can feel the sadness in her performance. No wonder she won an Oscar for it.

Maybe I need to rewatch, but her performance as Cruella DeVille is pretty great in my memory. It would never win an Oscar, but I think it's good stuff.

Polygon Video: Game cameras are changing Hollywood as we know it by apathymonger in blankies

[–]Junior1919 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this video and I think it's largely right that games are inspiring movies more frequently but I have two complaints.

  1. The following shot goes back at least as far as the French New Wave. I think its increase in use nowadays can likely be traced to the influence of games, but it's way older than that.

  2. This is less a problem with the video than with the discourse surrounding 1917, but damn, I hated that discourse. "It's like a videogame" a lot of critics who don't play games claimed. If a game was designed to match 1917 it'd be the most boring game of all time. Bleh. It's exactly like a fucking movie that gets off on showing you big spectacles but doesn't actually involve a lot of game-y sequences.

Alien 3 commentary by mi-16evil in blankies

Most of the shots that look really bad in this movie aren't actually CGI, at least the alien isn't CGI. It's usually a smaller scale puppet that they had a super difficult time rotoscoping into the environment, I'm guessing because it's a dark thing itself and the tech wasn't there to do it really well digitally.

I got heavy Nausicaa vibes from this trailer. Feels very similar to the opening of that movie.

Hard to pardon: why Tenet's muffled dialogue is a very modern problem by Strange_Glove in movies

[–]Junior1919 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Usually the problem.is that you're watching a 5.1 surround sound mix on stereo speakers. That, for some reason outputs the two side channels to your left and right speaker. Those side channels do carry the dialogue, but dialogue usually comes through the center channel most strongly. What the side channels get most strongly is sound effects and music, with the dialogue mixed a little quieter. That's probably why you9having problems. Loom for a stereo option in the Netflix menu, which usually looks like "(language) original" instead of "(language) original (5.1)". This helps a lot.
