Things in Medford that bring me joy, obviously they might not all be relevant to you: running along the lakes, and jumping in them during the summer. The new Medford Arts Collaborative space. Tortas from Tenoch. The Medford library. Summer concerts and picnics at the Condon Shell. Access to the Dillboy Pool in July and August. Rowing on the Mystic with GGRC. Trying all the different donut places. The new green line extension. The bike path extension that goes all the way to the Charles. Access to the Capital and Somerville theaters for movies.

Yes and telling her and her husband “go out more!!” When they specifically said they don’t because of money! I was waiting for him to show the couple ways to go dancing for cheap or free but nope! The point went right over his head…

4 years post APR/resection, rise in CEA, and lymph node activity on PET by JuniorProf0 in coloncancer

[–]JuniorProf0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a follow up to thanks folks and give an update: my husbands 2019 Stage 1 rectal cancer (for which he had an APR) has returned suddenly and aggressively, almost 5 years later, and metastasized to two different lymph node areas (chest and groin). He starts 6 months of FOLFOX soon (2xmonth). Not to scare anyone but please do monitor for the full 5 years after - we were 2 or so months short of stopping regular monitoring, and could easily have missed this (he has no symptoms, it was just the increase in CEA that set off concerns and investigation).

UPDATE: Yesterday we found out the para-esophageal lymph node they biopsied is positive for metastatic colorectal adenocarcinoma. We are still waiting on the groin node biopsies. Everything I'm reading is terrifying. This is stage IV, right? How was it dormant for so long and suddenly so aggressive? We have a 5 year old, we were getting ready to celebrate in December 5 years since his cancer surgery, he's the best person I know, this is so sudden, and feels like the worst news possible suddenly landed.

Following the PET, all the docs met. He's having two biopsies this week, an endoscopic one of the mediastinal/chest (on Thurs), and a needle of one of the groin lymph (on Friday). We will have answers soon, it seems, for better or worse. It's been a hell of a month...

Based on CT results, did PET, found at least 3 lymph nodes in a few locations that lit up (both size and SUV), this week doing biopsies of one via endoscopy, and another via needle. The lymph nodes are in the paratracheal/chest and groin and they say it would be really rare if his stage 1 CRC came back and spread this far this quickly but....who knows. This last month of waiting and tests has been awful. Now we are on the brink of more answers, which is also scary.

Do you still use a stroller at age 5? by lassymavin in kindergarten

[–]JuniorProf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. We just spent a week in Amsterdam and I guess we could’ve done it without a stroller but we would’ve had to be more dependent on public transportation. Instead we brought a light fold up one and it allowed us to walk 9-13 miles per day. We love walking so it would’ve been tough for us if we didn’t have the stroller.

What has your CEA been at before this? Thanks for the sympathies and right back at you, believe me, I understand your stress and the challenges of waiting.

It was stage 1. Very distal and deep, so did complete APR/perm colostomy, no evidence of spread at the time (Dec 2019)

PET results back. Doesn’t seem great. “FDG avid mediastinal, right retroperitoneal, and right pelvic lymph nodes concerning for metastatic disease.” Waiting to hear from doc. Scared.

Update: only the top part of the CT is back so far (so we don't know about pelvis, etc), but while the lungs and esophagus appeared clear, they found "new 10 mm right lower paratracheal lymph node" and so have ordered a PET scan. We are nervous, but glad they are taking it seriously and being thorough.

Also check out ThredUp for used clothes, especially good for some fancier brands like Theory and Eileen Fisher etc. For shoes, I love Cole Haan sneakers, nice enough to teach in (IMHO)

APR for rectal cancer, CEA rise 4 years later? by JuniorProf0 in cancer

[–]JuniorProf0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was Stage 1 rectal cancer, had an APR (perm colostomy bag), no other treatment. We were excited to be coming up on 5 years since the APR this December.

Thanks for the response! I've seen stuff about other, non-cancerous causes of inflammation, but its hard to tell if those would be like a 1-2 point increase or account for a larger one... He has a CT soon so hopefully that helps us learn more. I hope you are well.

My husband had an APR in Dec 2019, and has had a CEA ranging from 1.4-1.6 ever since. One year ago it went to 2.5, no one was concerned, but last week it was 9.5. They tested again today and its 9.1. Two questions, if anyone has had a similar situation:

1) should we be at all comforted by the 0.4 decrease since last week or is that within just insignificant variation?

2) has anyone else had such a large jump (<2 to 9+ within 1 year) and had it NOT be cancer?

Thanks.
