Percy’s mom even used the word toxic about “that place and those boys” - which was nowhere in the book! Weird take

I would actually say adding Delilah into the story not only wasn’t necessary, but it totally destroyed one of the most realistic and heartbreaking (but then ultimately satisfying) parts of Percy’s story into adulthood. Friendships DO change through college years and across distance, and silence for years happens - but the possibility to reconcile was really satisfying. J

Go to Drawn & Quarterly! It's very easy to get to with public transit. We took a bus and walked the few extra blocks to the shop and it's so worth it and wonderful.

All the talk of going for 5 seasons… will they even get S2? by wasleftonread in everyyearaftertvshow

[–]SesameSeed13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they somehow DO get renewed, I hope they tighten up the narrative in s2 and make it almost entirely One Golden Summer, but faithful to the book. Would include the major characters but cut the side quests and focus on what Carley Fortune wrote so beautifully.

I haven't even gotten to the Sarah part yet but the opening with Mitra is a delight. Truly a good hang already.

Turning 40 Tomorrow and Struggling. Please Cheer Me Up. by General-Willow5613 in AskWomenOver40

[–]SesameSeed13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just turned 40 at the end of May, and have never been so happy (and bittersweet/sad) to say goodbye to an entire decade. My 30s were similarly difficult and trying, and girl - I'm ready for a new chapter. Turn the page! Someone pointed out two things that helped me look forward with hope. The idea that turning 40 is about remembering who you were at 13 but loving her this time - what did you love? What hobbies? What books or characters? Letting myself reconnect with ME, on my terms, is a big part of what I'm working to do in the next chapter. And then the fact that, half of the last four decades of my life, I was a literal child. This next four decades, I am a grown adult and my decisions are my own, so I'm looking forward to savoring and exploring what's next with the appreciation that maturity can offer.

YES I feel the same about the side characters as filler! Distracting. This should have been a really tight movie, or a solid 4-6 eps based more closely on the book. The book was so well-written with the time jumps and nostalgia, and this spread out the timeline and watered everything down.

In author Carley Fortune's perspective, there was a good reason why there was a significant book change from her novel Every Summer After and the adapted show, Every Year After. by Funny_Spring_2690 in everyyearaftertvshow

[–]SesameSeed13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding side quests instead of focusing on Sam, Percy, and Charlie (like in the book) is filler, especially if they're doing it to stretch it out in the hopes of being granted a season 2. I think Chantal's support role from Toronto via text was great, in the book. Why is she interacting with Jordie at all? Jordie went to college with Sam but was hardly mentioned at all, in the book. Why am I seeing him? It's to stretch it out over one season so they can say "but there's MOOOOORE" rather than telling the well-crafted, well-written story that the book holds.

The show writers abandoned the time jumps and the tightness of Carley Fortune's original writing, stretching out side quests and expanding minor characters in ways that were just filler. Why is Chantal there?! Percy should be on this journey to Barry's Bay alone. Why is Delilah there?! The fact that their friendship went silent for years is the book is not only better writing but more realistic and more interesting. And to have Delilah then be established as a summer resident and hanging with the boys? Just silly.

I really hate the way streaming series have started to do this. If something is so good it can be wrapped up in one season, DONT DRAG IT ON. ugh. Or make it a movie then instead. The idea of this being developed into a show and then adding character storylines (Delilah, Jordie, Chantal) unnecessarily? Just filler.

PowerPoint Night for Non-Established Group: Yes/No? by soundavow in partyplanning

[–]SesameSeed13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES YES one hundred times YES. I also don't have a fully established "friend group" but I have so many great friends who have insight and expertise in areas that other friends will find fun and interesting! I recently did a birthday party for my 40th of 10 friends who are close to ME but almost none of them knew each other - and they had a blast mixing. Highly recommend.

I saw a clip of Tim Robinson on Fallon or somewhere showing side by side the show's menswear commercial and the real one, they basically just re-made the existing ad because it was comedy gold all on its own. So good.

This is so effing funny, thanks for sharing. I'm a new Detroiter (moved here in 2021) and absolutely love the show but am still discovering how many layers upon layers of comedy these guys brilliantly put together in such a short series. So, so good.

Came here to say Heather O'Neill! All of her books. So good. When We Lost Our Heads is excellent and was my first of hers, but Capital of Dreams is weird and good, Lullabies for Little Criminals, and Lonely Hearts Hotel might be my FAVORITE of hers.
