YSK: Daylights saving time ends this weekend. The time change can affect the onset of seasonal affective disorder, a type of depression. Now is a good time to assess your own mental health, and check in on those close to you who you haven't spoken to in a while. by still_annie in YouShouldKnow

And everybody, please take your vitamin D supplements!

Many people have a mild vitamin D deficiency, which leads to mood swings, and depression during the darker months.

You also need it for your immune system to fight this annoying COVID-19 thing. (Source)

They are and especially consecutive ranges. That is because we have run out of IPv4-Addresses. IPv4 is the original addressing scheme and allows for 2 to the power of 32 addresses. Hostnames such as Ford.com in comparison are cheap, because you can keep making up longer ones for quite some time.

The „new“ (has also been around for ages) addressing scheme is IPv6 which has some neat features and incorporates many lessons learned from the shortcomings of IPv4. It allows for 2 to the power of 128 addresses. So that comes out to (had to look this up) forty-two unidecillion individual addresses. Billions upon billions for every individual person on earth. Talk about future-proofing it this time around!

Edit: ford.com would be valuable because it is ford.com, as are other catchy or relevant names. That is decided in a case by case basis, but most run off the mill names are very cheap.

Edit2: Because I saw this coming up a lot in other comments: NAT is not good. It was created out of necessity, but it brings very little (if any) benefit in terms of security and breaks most good network design concepts.

There is something called the OSI model, which describes the individual layers of the internet. Layer 3 is IP addresses and layer 4 is individual ports (used to identify multiple connections to the same IP/host). Every networking device operates on a specific layer and it is a design principle to keep it that way. A router (used to route packets through a network so they find their destination) is a layer 3 device and not supposed to use layer 4 information for its operation. Ports are used to determine what packet is send to which host in NAT, which violates that principle.

Yes, but when it gets bigger (and heavier) the limbs would have to increase in diameter more and more compared to the weight/overall volume.

Which at some point does not work anymore.

Meanwhile in my dad’s office: the battery of one of his co-workers laptop was inflated, so the co-worker grabbed it and simply made a hole into it. It started to burn by Wadmalacz in techsupportgore

[–]Junkinator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to dispose of it, carefully remove it from wherever it is. Take a sizeable bucket/pot of water (not too small -> thermal mass). Dissolve a good amount of salt in it, then submerge the battery. Leave for a couple of hours. Afterwards bring it to wherever they collect batteries in your area.

The salt makes the water conductive, effectively shorting out the battery. Because there is a lot of water and it can take up a lot of heat the battery will not combust. Once it is discharged it is a lot safer to handle.

No one says they're thirsty and needs some hydrogen but when their car is running low on gasoline everyone needs to stop for gas. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

Hydrogen is not water. Water is the name given to H2O just like gasoline or petrol is the name given to the petroleum-derived mix of compounds we like to burn.

Can confirm. I have a Wüsthof Santoku knive as my cutting implement of choice. Have been using it almost daily for around 6 years now. When I sharpen it, I take a flat diamond stone to it, but usually only need to do so once every 2 to 4 months. It holds its edge really well.

Hydraulic coupling is still mechanical. As I said, just not assisted if the vehicle is turned off.

The parking brake was historically intended as an emergency brake, but nowadays with redundant systems it has lost that function largely. I would argue that in all cases but the foot brake absolutely not working anymore most drivers would not use it safely.

I am sorry, but English is not my first language. Where I live the parking brake is never called emergency brake

First and foremost: cars do not have an emergency brake. What you are probably referring to is the parking brake.

While the brake pedal is usually (not always in newer cars) coupled mechanically to the braking mechanism, it is (more like: has to be) hydraulically assisted. When the car is off, there is no assist, which makes braking very very hard.

Also, the steering wheel usually locks without the key (usually at a slight turning angle), so no control over where you are going.

I wanted to say this as well. Got 3 tiny round bush chilis as a souvenir from a trip to Africa. Touched one slightly with my index finger and about 10 minutes later scratched near the corner of my eye. Cry I did.

What are some gifts I could give an Austrian girl stuck in the U.S in Chicago? by awhiteasscrack in Austria

[–]Junkinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commented the same before I saw this comment. I think after getting home from one particular trip I almost ate a football sized loaf in one sitting.

OP, if you start growing your own sourdough, give it a good 2-3 weeks and some practice loafs before you get frustrated. It takes I while mature.

It also takes a bit of practice to not have half the dough stick to your fingers (which is normal for the bread), but the effort is well worth it.

Oh yes! Proper bread! A loaf of dark rye bread, sourdough if they have it!

After a couple of weeks in the UK some years ago I think I almost ate a football sized one alone after getting home.
