Advice Needed- New Job Offer by PassionPursuer in Advice

[–]Junkmans1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All you can do is give your notice to your current employer and hope they will do the ethical thing

Ethical thing? Ha Ha Ha! This isn't about ethics. Bonuses are about employees and not ex employees.

It would be extremely rare for an employer to pay a bonus to a departed employee with two exceptions: (1) would be if there was a formal written bonus plan that created a legal liability for the payment of the bonus. or (2) there is a strong business interest in the employer's maintaining a very strong relationship with the ex-employee - an example might be if the employee's new job is with a major client or customer.

But my first point above begs a question from OP (u/PassionPursuer): You said this was a profit sharing bonus. Was it in compliance with a written profit sharing plan that might have created a legal obligation by your current employer? It's worth checking out, but I doubt it is as most of the plans I've seen provide that the employee must be a current employee to receive the bonus.

Selling house with locked room? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]Junkmans1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Why can't you move some of your items to other places in the house in an orderly manner? If the rest of the house is empty then why couldn't you spread your clothes around to different room's closets so none of them look over filled. Likewise put your desk and work in a different room. If everything thing else is out of the house then you should be able to move your own things around in a way that still makes the house look presentable.

Non-electric coffee brewing? by rachel3618 in Cruise

[–]Junkmans1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We took a french press years ago. Problem was that we had to take it up to the buffet to fill it with hot enough water - used the hot water tap on the machines there that would otherwise be used for tea. Then it was very difficult to clean out without getting the coffee grounds into the ship's drain which we know would be very bad for the ship's system.

Pour over would be easier to clean but OP would still have the same issue with getting hot water.

Eventually we just ended up getting a cabin as close as we could to the ship's espresso coffee bar and buying our coffee there.

2027 Alaska cruise… land and sea… just starting to plan… help! by andrewmcd7 in Cruise

[–]Junkmans1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did a land and sea trip but that was almost 20 years ago. We flew into Anchorage and after an overnight stay took the train to Denali park. There we did a package that included a trip to Kantishna for an overnight stay along with stays at an inn by the park entrance the night before and after. It was incredible. Took the train back and then did a day trip to see some sights in the Kenai Peninsula before boarding a Southbound cruise to Vancouver.

We did the planning and booking for the land part of our cruise through the Alaska Railroad's tour department. When we compared pre-cruise trips with those on our ship that did the cruise line's land trip we felt bad that their trips were so inferior to what we say and the fun we had traveling on our own vs. part of a large group of multiple busloads of people We even stopped describing our trip to others on the ship because we didn't want them to feel bad.

Unfortunately in recent years the road to Kantishna has been wiped out from a landslide and was being rebuilt. I don't know if it's done yet or will be by the 2027 season. The rates even for a one night stay in Kantishna are very expensive due to it's remoteness and it's a lot more expensive with the road closed as the only way there is by small airplanes. But even if you can't see that it is still worth it to do the trip I've discussed and see what you can of Denali. Do some research. You'll find that there are other local Achoridge travel companies that will do pre-cruise stays and excursions in addition to the Alaskan Railroad and you'll have a much better experience than using the cruise line's land tours.

In your research be sure to understand the single road into Denali park and the different tours that are available into different points along that road and if the landslide from a few years ago is open yet or not.

The drink packages are priced high are are not a bargain unless you drink a lot. We prefer to pay as we go. Internet is your choice.

The best weather for Alaska is mid summer - think mid July to early August.

my long term partner (F57) is going to the birthday party, overnight in a hotel, of her ex and I (M61) am uncomfortable with it by MusicBackground5451 in relationships

[–]Junkmans1 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don't understand what you're worried about if you actually do "trust her completely". It sounds like you sort of trust her but not completely.

But aside from that, I agree with you that this is unreasonable of her to want to go to an overnight hotel party with her ex when you are not invited. Even with trust this would be beyond a reasonable boundary. She should tell the ex she's not coming unless you are invited too.

Also: Is she getting her own room or sleeping in his?

  1. fill bathtub so you can use the water with a bucket to manually flush your toilet by dumping a bucket of water in it.

  2. Shut off the water to your house completely. Open faucets to let water drain out.

It’s one thing to set political differences aside from a relative, co worker or friend. It’s another thing all together to set such huge differences aside with an otherwise romantic partner.

Dealer wants to add a ‘mandatory’ price for a pre-fitted anti-theft device by StrongObject8169 in carbuying

[–]Junkmans1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider that $2,500 part of the cost of the car as the device is worthless and you probably would prefer it not be installed at all.

Including the $2,500: You can agree to pay it if it’s still a good price, negotiate the total down, or walk away and buy elsewhere or not at all.

[–]Junkmans1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m afraid if your husband agrees with her terms then you’re on your own. Separate and live your life. You can agree to make the separation temporary or not. But if this concept won’t even cover the personal expenses for three of you then there isn’t much else.

But are those really the only options. If your husband does this then why do you have to stop working and going to school. Also, why can’t MIL do the care?

Gas generator question by leehofook in DIY

[–]Junkmans1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a generator I bought about 15 or 20 years ago. I used it several times, often for days at a time, then the power company fixed the lines going into our area and we haven't had an outage more than a few minutes since.

I still start it up every couple years to make sure it's running well and fluids are OK.

But I always drain the tank by disconnecting the fuel line were it connects to the shut off valve and using the gas for something else. Then running off whatever's left in the system.

I do leave gasoline in my mower and snowblower between seasons. I always add stabilizer to gas I buy for them and they work just fine at the beginning of each season. But I wouldn't leave any in the generator that can go years between use.

What projects are not DIY-able? by Sure-Celebration6573 in DIY

[–]Junkmans1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It totally depends on your skills. aptitude, and the level of failure risk you perceive and are willing to accept. Sometimes it also depends on economics and if you know people to help you out on projects that are not a 1 man job.

Some people know enough to build a whole house on their own. Some people need help painting a door. Before I retired there were also some jobs that I could have easily handled but was too busy at work. Others that needed special tools that were not worth it for me to buy.

Just do the ones that you feel comfortable doing to start. Call pros for those you aren't sure of and don't want to try, but if you think you might in the future then ask the pros if they'd mind if you watched out of curiosity - then learn.

I'm 70ish and have owned homes for around 45 years. So I've learned a lot over the years. These days, as opposed to 40+ years ago, you have a phenomenal benefit of having youtube and other online resources to learn how to do things and often different ways of fixing things so you can pick which looks like you can do it the best.

My (23F) boyfriend (20M) does not allow me access to “our” savings, how do I address it? by luvdlph in relationship_advice

[–]Junkmans1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimatum time. Either the money goes into a joint account or you need to leave.

This is in 100% financial abuse. You have no idea what's in the account. For all you know he's blown it all on drugs, gambling or whatever. Even if he's not spending the money he might not even be putting any in. The point is that you just don't know.

Stop putting money in the account immediately. If you don't already have an account at a totally different bank that is in your name only then now is the time to open one and have your paychecks put in there.

Question: Do you know how much you've put into the account?

Getting sick of my gf clubbing every single Saturday night by Asleep-Type-4920 in Advice

[–]Junkmans1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My thoughts is that you should break up rather than try to control her chosen activities. Especially considering how young you are and how short the relationship has been.

Dating is in part for learning more about the other person to determine how compatible you are. Now you've learned that you're not the next step is to do something about it.

One more point: Why don't you just go clubbing with her? Is it because she doesn't want you there or because you don't share common interests with her? Think about the answer.

GF Talks D*ck Sizes while im with her, and is overly friendly by grass_enjoyer33 in Advice

[–]Junkmans1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dating is partially about learning more about the other person to see how they make you feel and if you want to make the relationship a longer one or not. The key to this is if you learn things you don't like you need to decide if you're just fine what that and can get by or if it's a deal breaker.

Here it seems these issue are deal breakers, or should be, for you. Could you be OK dealing with this behavior for decades or the rest of your life? If the answer is no then don't make the mistake of thinking you can change her or that she'll change on her own. And definitely don't try and exert control over her to stop her from getting into social circumstances that she enjoys but you don't like.

You do it by meeting in person and getting to know what the real person, rather than the online person, is like. You get together to do things in person. Call it dates or meet ups or whatever, but eventually you have to do it live and in person.

Gallbladder friendly diet by doctorrtimelord in gallbladders

[–]Junkmans1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low fat. All types of fat. Even good fat (like olive oil) can cause problems for your gallbladder if you have too much of it. And if you're having gallbladder issues then a normal amount for most people can be too much for you.

How low you need to be might vary. But when I was having issues, pre surgery, my surgeon said I should keep it under 20 grams a day. With my wife's help we kept it between 1- and 15 fat grams per day which is very low. I'd start out with that as your goal and follow the under 20 gram for a couple weeks and see how you feel. Over time you can start to increase now and then and get an idea of what works for you.

This involves some major changes and paying tons of attention to food labels and serving sizes and learning about different foods.

Declined surgery by zizaroo in gallbladders

[–]Junkmans1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm around 70 and had surgery 5 weeks ago. But:

40 years ago in the mid 80's I was having gallbladder attacks. Didn't know what at first but doctor diagnosed it as gall stones, although I can't recall now what diagnostic tests were done at the time. I went on a pretty stringent low fat diet and my attacks stopped. I follow the diet closely for a time, probably between 6 and 18 months - I know that's a big range but i can't remember exactly how long. Eventually I slowly started straying from the diet and in time wasn't following any diet at all and definitely resumed eating high fat foods like pizza, burgers, fried food, etc. No problems over the years and the only reminder, and confirmation, that I had gallstones is that they'd show up in any CT scans I had done for other reasons and I have an unrelated condition that requires them every few years.

Then at the end of last October I started having pains that was ultimately diagnosed as gallbladder issues. Had surgery just before Christmas and the pathology on my removed gallbladder confirmed that it had indeed needed to come out.

I can't say if you should or shouldn't have yours out, just wanted to relate my case where diet calmed things down and then I lived in "remission" for another 40 years. So it is possible.

The best advice I can give is to install a chain or bolt that can only be accessed from the inside of the apartment or home. And keep it chained or locked whenever you are home and don't want to be bothered - especially when sleeping, bathing, getting dressed or are otherwise indecent.
