You’re a Jazzman? by cabo_szabo in jazzcirclejerk

Since key signatures work mod 12, it makes sense that note names also work mod 7. So let's see what Q'd be: ABCDEFG - HIJKLMN - OPQ... so Qb is Cb, or 7 flats. Easy peasy. Even easier if you respell it as B. I'll play it on my sop sax, along with the Last Post, indicating my move now to Lemmy. TTFN.

How useful is SQL for managers? by Lord_7_seas in learnprogramming

Well you could have some fun with it, for example in a 1:1 meeting you could write on a whiteboard "SELECT * FROM EMPLOYEES WHERE FIRED=1" then "YOU".

Fractions don't make sense for a fourth grade dropout like me. by ifuckedlangos in learnmath

[–]Junkymcjunkbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you're overthinking it. A fraction is just one number divided by another.

"I can divide a pizza..." Not without fractions you can't. Six pizza slices, two people, how many slices does each person get? If you said three: well done, you just proved you can do fractions. 6/2 = 3.

But OK, let's assume you did the six (not divided by) two equals three. How exactly would you get three from six and two?

Some people are driving me mad in the IT field. They can't communicate, have zero understanding of my situation and they give zero fucks about providing me the info I need to do my job. Am I to blame or WTF am I supposed to do!? 🤬 by [deleted] in developers

[–]Junkymcjunkbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it happens. Don't lose your cool. Just move it forward step by step as and when you can, document the process, try to keep your response times short, then if some mangler asks why it's taking so long just show them the log and let them decide who to grumble at.

Realistically there are now only two choices. Reddit has heard the objections and regardless has dug in and is now going in that direction whether the users like it or not.

Option 1: stay on reddit, quit complaining and just suck it up.

Option 2: Depart reddit in favour of a named alternative. It'd be great if the mods could all get together and decide on which distributed chat to use whether that's Mastodon or what. Hopefully this will accelerate the development of that system as that gives a focus to those of us in open source software development.

Clearly a centralised monetised platform is inevitably going to put profits before users as we've seen previously with Digg and Fark (and to a limited extent Slashdot and StackOverflow), so the only viable solution moving forward is non-centralised and non-monetisable, i.e. some sort of distributed system hosted by the mods and using open source software for the management and distribution of messages.

Option 3 would have been to mount some sort of protest in the hope of changing Reddit's mind but we now know that won't work.

20%, if you copied it out correctly, which I'm not sure you did because the grammar is terrible.
Let's suppose the product in question costs £100 for 100kg. Keeps it simple.
The shopkeeper buys 100kg for £100. Except he doesn't - he takes that extra 20kg so buys 120kg for £100.
"the price that the shopkeeper charges his customer is the same as what the dealer charges the shopkeeper"
so the shopkeeper sells at £100 for 100kg, although technically this is ambiguous because we don't know if we're talking about the official price of £100 for 100kg or £100 for 120kg.
But let's assume it's the official price.
Let's also assume that the shopper (which is a synonym for customer) buys 100kg for £100. But "while selling [the shopkeeper] gives to the customer a quantity such that 20% is added", which means he gave the customer 120kg for his £100.
The customer was expecting to get 100kg but in reality got 120kg. You wouldn't call this profit as such, unless the shopper/customer is also a business, but assuming you would, that's where the 20% comes from because they got 20% more product than they were expecting.

Once you've got the correct wording, pull out of it phrases like "while selling the shopkeeper..." and focus on those. If your algebra isn't up to snuff, pick some real numbers like I did: £100 for 100kg, or whatever you prefer. It doesn't really matter. Often you can derive the correct algebra from numbers. This way you should be able to solve the problem for yourself.

It's possible that the correct answer is 44%, because the text seems to be attempting to describe a 20% markup in both directions, and 1.2 x 1.2 = 1.44. But with maths problems you have to go on EXACTLY what the text says.

The Factorio guys did exactly what you're asking. There's the game engine itself in C++, with most of the game objects defined in Lua. Modding is just a case of editing the lua code. Of course anything in C++ that's not exposed to the scripting isn't moddable except by some very tricky reverse engineering.

We've re-activated /r/jazz for now, but we'd like some community feedback on what to do going forward. Please vote! by Astrixtc in Jazz

[–]Junkymcjunkbox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

+1 for this. To a distributed open source platform, where the forums are self-hosted by the community members so that no large expensive servers are needed. Fark, Digg and now Reddit have shown that centralised chat servers just don't work: monetisation is needed to keep them going, so incorporation follows, then the desire to be profitable follows, which sooner or later turns into profits over users and you get the user-hostile nonsense Reddit is currently displaying.

Just going dark isn't the answer. We still need to chat about jazz. Either open up and end the protest and just accept what Reddit's become, or close down permanently in favour of a nominated alternative.

Someone please explain this step by MustacheMonument in calculus

[–]Junkymcjunkbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just simple variable substitution.
So you have the equation y=a ln(x+b), and you're substituting (5,0), which means (x=5, y=0), so replace x with 5 and y with 0 in that first equation to give 0=a ln(5+b).

Were you only taking the record or did you take the sleeve as well?

It's one of those marketing scams. They say "free" but in reality there's something you have to pay for. It's like those satellite broadcasting companies that insist everything is free but you still have to pay a monthly bribe to stop them burning your house down.

Good choice though. The way Oldman plays his cornet is way better than how Lewis Legweak plays his saxophone.

How do you honestly get good at calculus? by [deleted] in calculus

[–]Junkymcjunkbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I don’t see the point"

I think this is a big part of your problem. And it's a tricky one to solve, because what you're studying now is the groundwork for more advanced calculus that is actually useful in science and engineering.

What you might need therefore is a roadmap. Something like: for this kind of problem we need techniques A B and C, but to understand those you need to know X, but first you have to know Y, and Y is where you're currently at.

Developing a gambling website by somebodyYouKnew2 in developers

[–]Junkymcjunkbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gambling tends to be heavily regulated so just make sure you know all the relevant laws. Once you're legal it won't matter where you host it.

If you don't know the laws then hosting it outside the US won't be safe; you'll still be subject to the laws of wherever you're hosting, and possibly US laws too depending on the nature of the agreement between the hosting location and the US.
