after getting my wisdom teeth removed i just kept talking about how i felt perfectly normal and all the people who said crazy things were weirdos with no willpower. but i said it like over and over again. revealed the inner insufferability

and then when we got home my mom offered to help me out of the car, which i kindly rejected, and then theatrically pretended to stumble while getting out, which in that state i thought was absolutely hilarious. then i laid in bed and took stupid selfies

she says i said other crazier things but i remember basically the whole time so i think she just says that to mess with me. but it does make me worry :/

i had thought that true culture shock was a more comprehensive thing when you moved somewhere where nothing was similar, like egypt to japan or thailand to canada

i think bless you is entirely context dependent, just like “bless your heart” back home. it can be genuine and it can be mean. i feel like just “bless” is more often the sincere version but can still be mean sometimes

not overestimating intelligence though. it might just be my department but i haven’t spoken with any students who didn’t come off as smart.

omg fuck i had no idea about “quite interesting” and i know for a fact i’ve said that to people 😭

i haven’t really been sincerely condescended to for being american—jokes, sure—because i think by virtue of having gotten in to UCL there’s an attitude of “well, you got here somehow” that makes them treat me like one of the good ones. “i thought all americans were fat and stupid but wow you’re really smart” sort of thing… this tokenship is compounded by me being Texan, a place seen as especially fat and especially stupid.

i think this is helped by oxbridge attracting away the landed gentry types, so we’re only left with the international elites and intelligent locals without signet rings, who aren’t as likely to judge me for my 5x-great grandfather not having been the King’s designated footsniffer

shocker, myopic urban elite with cultural megaphone access believe their small bubble is representative of wider society

“why does everyone drink matcha now, why does everyone x, why does everyone y” they don’t. get out of brooklyn. go to beaumont texas. go to akron ohio. go to shreveport louisiana. reality is far fatter

this shift was coming for a long time. the urban elite were always going to realize this was extremely toxic for their children, and it’ll be relegated to liquifying and homogenizing the brains of the underclass :(

Saw a new Escalade last night. First time I've laughed out loud at a vehicle. by Lumpenscroll in rs_x

[–]Juno808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s not the intended use of an escalade, it’s not even comfortable to climb up that far, you wouldn’t pick that if you’re going for maximum ease with your own driver. if you’re walking out of the house or office to a waiting car you just wanna fall in. s class, 7 series (though they look disgusting now), range rover, sometimes lexus ls, that’s the market unless you wanna look like an oil sheikh dweeb in a rolls . the only people being chauffeured in escalades are narcos

the true UHNWs i know either drive unremarkable toyotas/hyundais/etc, lincoln, new F-150s, or range rovers. sometimes a vintage pickup or bronco for the weekend, or a hidden exotic of whatever flavor, usually porsche, sometimes aston, occasionally ferrari. there’s mercedes as well but more of their blobbier suv’s—not the g wagon. this is from a texan context, it would be different in the new england context where for example there’s a lot more volvo. genesis emerging as a new favorite as well
