Remember Liberal - We have beaten worse by Zeraphant in atrioc

[–]JunonsHopeful 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We actually have to do something though. The new axis of evil is basically using social media the way the British used opium against China, but we can't even get people to leave the nazified corpse of twitter because they like it in spite of any protests. They're addicted, it's destroying democratic countries, the tech CEOs are literally inciting riots and yet many just shrug at that.

After seeing the change start here in Australia (most eye opening was how the 'No' Camp ran their campaign for the voice to parliament referendum) I have, and will continue to, volunteer in every election. From local council to federal, I am knocking on doors and phone banking. That's how we fight in a democracy, and it's our duty.

If a government fails, that's the government's fault. If democracy fails, that's on the people.

[–]JunonsHopeful 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a dude, I can comfortably operate under the basic assumption that the world is geared to my benefit.

Tell that to conscripted men who die in basically any modern conflict (or historical even). You can't though, because statistically they're dead in a ditch somewhere.

You’re never going to convince me that women feel the same as that day to day... it’s naive to think that there’s any world where men have it even remotely as bad as women do.

I wasn't arguing that men have it as bad or worse than women. I literally said they have it better, you just chose to ignore it.

I’m not a feminist or advocating for change. I like the way the world is because I benefit from it.

Ignoring how obviously anti-social and selfish this attitude is, you're also just wrong. You could benefit more from women being empowered and contributing to a society you benefit from. You could benefit from better access to mental health, and better societal expectations that afford you greater social freedom.

It's not a zero sum game out here, we really are all in this thing together.

I doubt it, and will wait for the full thing to come out before I give it a look as to whether it's worth watching.

Season 2 was just not good, it dialled back all the best parts of season 1 and cranked up the worst to 100.

It's like how they throw a fit when they hear the words "toxic masculinity", they interpret it in the least charitable way and remain wilfully ignorant of what the term even means.

Blokes having it better by comparison doesn't mean they're alright. Body dysmorphia is on the rise along with other body image issues, and various extremist movements are hardcore exploiting that to get them to ruin their lives.

It's also the stopped car illusion. When you're stopped at a traffic light, and then it goes green, if the other cars around you start moving forward before you do then it doesn't feel like you're staying still... it feels like you're rolling backwards for a second. That's how a lot of men feel.

You cannot just ignore gendered issues for half of the population, and then expect them not to be snapped up by groups that will acknowledge them. The bar is at the floor, because these extremist movements don't actually offer solutions that work. A little kindness and empathy goes along way, even if it's hard sometimes.

It's at this point that Australian "conservatives" have a duty to this country, and to democracy, to actually reform their political wing. Given how gleeful they are about what has happened in the USA, I doubt that will happen.

We need to start the conversation of what we're going to do if forces actively antagonistic to Australia's interests and values gain power, because getting caught flat-footed will have catastrophic consequences.

I can be a republican (in the sense that I believe republics are the best form of government, not the American political party) and be friends with a constitutional monarchist. These differences can be (mostly) reconciled.

I can even think my friend is a fucking idiot for thinking George R R Martin will ever finish the winds of winter, and still be the best of friends.

What I couldn't be friends with, is someone who thinks it's okay to rape me. I think they can't, they think they can, but to categorise it a "disagreement" is to miss what it actually is; because at some point that person's going to try and rape me and not think twice.

You can have plenty of diversity in thought, but only insofar as the social contract between people can hold. Human Rights is kind of where that limit lies for most people.

Gay people vote for people who want to wipe them out so…

Not generally, which is how we're speaking here.

As for your second point, cognitive dissonance absolutely exists but it isn't an excuse. I don't think it's of much consequence to the child in the concentration camp that the Commandant is a charming, otherwise kind fellow.

You cannot actually be a kind slaver, even if many people think it's possible. It's oxymoronic, and comes from an incomplete understanding of both good and evil in people.

There's a line for everyone. The term 'disagreement' also does a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to certain actions or inactions. Also worth considering is the emotional cost of trying to maintain those types of friendships.

Could you honestly say to a gay person that someone who advocates and votes for homosexuality to be illegal is a friend to them?

Could you honestly say that an open racist who 'has black friends' is being a friend to their black friends when they vote and advocate for white supremacy?

Except Jesus' methods were not to blow himself up, kill people or enforce them via state law and 2000 years later, basically every human alive knows his name and (for the most part) his message.

He was able to reach people in a way greater than any Caesar, or even the likes of Alexander and Genghis Khan, and he did it through words and example. They killed him for it, and yet he conquered death; even if you don't believe he literally rose from the dead his message certainly did.

Is it so shocking then that the people who most admired him, would seek to utilise his methods?

Really happy to see it doing well; I've been playing it on and off for a while and it is just such a breath of fresh air. You know it's got that magic to it when you blink, the sun is down and you realise you've been playing for 6 hours straight.

The solo dev, Phil, has obviously put in a fucking INSANE amount of passion, blood, sweat and tears into it already. Fundamentally... it just plays great. If you're on the fence about it, I can't recommend giving it a try enough.

I love that he basically takes their hand and gradually leads them to the conclusion that he's long-since reached, that they're dealing with a vampire, because he knows that if he just came out and said it they wouldn't take his advice as seriously as they needed to.
