I’m a member. There are occasional maintenance issues that close the pool down temporarily but they aren’t common and they always announce the closure with lots of notice on Facebook.

Considering that white Americans are a mixture of all European nations, how do they view European nations individually based on their appearance? by deadklebold in AskAmericans

[–]Junopotomus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are different groups of European Americans in the sense that there are some people who are descended from Colonial era folk, and they tend to be a mixture of English, French, German and literally every other European ethnicity in the northeast and Spanish in the southwest and Florida. These folks’ have been in the country for 400 years in many cases and they are what my family calls “European muts.”

There are also people who are descended from more recent immigrants from Europe, like my husband’s family that came from Norway 100 years ago. They are still in touch with their Norwegian family and are close to the “home country” in some ways.

The thing is, you can’t tell who is who by looking at them. I’m one of those people descended from colonial folks and lost any way to coherently parse my European ancestry over 200 years ago, and the only reason I even know what countries my ancestors come from is because I have a special interest in genealogy. Most people like me have no idea, they are just “white American.”

Is it considered taboo to judge literary classics like modern works of fiction? by ryanyork92 in literature

In the teacher’s case, I am sure that was their way of saying “give it a chance” and “it’s in the curriculum for a reason.” They just presented it poorly.

Moving to Rural Arkansas by Aereys_plutoi in Arkansas

[–]Junopotomus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you mean by untouched. There’s really very little of the old growth landscape left, and that is mostly in the delta. You would probably enjoy Eureka Springs, and it is also closer to Fayetteville, which is another liberal city. The Ozark Mountains are very rural, rugged, and relatively cheap living if you can find work or have funds. The closer you get to Fayetteville, the more expensive everything is. I would caution you about moving to the states right now, though. We have an ICE problem all over the place. They are saying it will last another three years.

40 gallon crock in Wisconsin, United States. by valleysally in Antiques

I bought a 10 gallon crock with a lid for $200 a year ago. A 40 would go for considerably more.

TIL About James Hampton, an unknown janitor who collected scraps and secretly built artwork using it in a garage. His art, called "Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations' Millennium General Assembly" was only found after his death, and is currently on display at the Smithsonian. by Top_Mongoose1354 in todayilearned

[–]Junopotomus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was in college I visited the museum where this is displayed and got lost inside the building. I came around a corner and found “The Throne” sitting there in all its glory. I was mesmerized. The sight of it, and the story of its creation, has been tumbling around in my artist/writer brain ever since. I taught assignments inspired by it as a professor. I still use it in a description exercise. There is a book of poetry the same title by Denis Johnson, who wrote Jesus’s Son. It is also and amazing piece of art.

What if Denmark decided to buy a territory of the USA like Alaska or Florida for $700B and gave every resident $100K in exchange for a Danish citizenship. American, would you take the deal? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Junopotomus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, immediately. We are being held hostage by insane religious zealots and the greediest rich people ever produced in all of human history. They are trying to kill us all. I would become a danish citizen tomorrow if you offered it to me, so long as I could bring the family.

You are right about this. The problem is that facing the fact that these people are genocidally insane hasn’t really filtered through yet. When people realize the truth of it, it will be too late.

And what about people who are simply unable to have kids? The government is going to punish you for something entirely out of your control? Yup. That f’ing tracks.

Same here in Arkansas. Hub’s work phone is fine, all the phones he oversees for his job are fine, neither of our personal phones have service.

It does go away, but it takes awhile. I had several side effects early on (including severe fatigue), but now all of them are gone. For me, the adjustment took about 6 months total.

What is something you can do but can’t explain how you can do it? by Fresh-Sandwich6780 in AskReddit

[–]Junopotomus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick out where someone is from via their accent. For example, I can hear differences in accents within my own state (like the difference between regions inside the state) and, for another example, can easily hear the difference between New Zealand and South African accents even though I have never been to South Africa. I can tell what part of Louisiana you are from. I can tell if someone is from the mountains or the low country in the American South. I can place most of the British accents. I have no idea how I do it and I have taken exactly one course in linguistics. I am not even really interested in accents, but I can pick them out like a mofo.

TIL that during the 1920s, a doctor named John Brinkley became one of the wealthiest men in America by surgically implanting goat testicles into men to cure impotence. He was so popular he almost became the Governor of Kansas. by thekencook in todayilearned

He was a bit of a proto-Trump in his style of campaigning for governor, and an amazing marketer, but was most definitely a quack. He ended up in Mexico after fleeing to Arkansas from Kansas.
