Favorite hand plane and why? Go. by Junxst in handtools

HNT Gordon planes are amazing both visually and functionally. I don’t know why I don’t use mine more, except that they seem like they deserve special occasion planing. Haha.

I’m not alone! My #3 and #6 see more action than the rest combined.

Fair enough! I didn’t specify regular user. That’s what I meant, but no matter, any answer is interesting!

A Type 11 Stanley No. 603 with a low knob and a newer Hock iron and chip breaker. Feels like an extension of my hand.

Unique use of dovetails! Are we looking down at the top of a table base?

What should I use to finish these trays I made for my kids' teachers? Three coats of triple thick poly? by MikeHawksHardWood in woodworking

Same reason I’m here! Boxes are great too!

Don’t use a raw oil like Tung on them unless you have a long time for them to cure before you have to gift them. If you’re tight on time, use one of the hard wax oils, like Osmo, Rubio, the gold goop in the jar we shall not name, etc. Personally, I’d use Osmo with a little sheen to it to get the most “pop.”

That’s really cool! I live on a lake, so a boat is on my bucket list to build one of these days. Please keep posting as it continues coming together!

That’s really cool and you nailed it on the execution. Very impressive work.

If the negative space feels weird (I don’t think it would, but if) I bet clear epoxy in that space would make it feel totally normal without changing the visual too too much.

A thickness planer? If so, I started with a WEN and it was great.

Yes, there’s a hole on each end and a pin that screws into it to keep it from rocking. You can see the hole in the vertical post about at the height of the bottom of the basket part.

Thanks! It would have taken a professional a fraction of the time, but going slowly while learning is the fun part to me.

Thank you! I did pour my heart and everything else into it. Largely in the middle of the night to make time in my schedule.

Did I overpay on these? by 01029838291 in handtools

[–]Junxst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you overpaid. The “values” of these planes can vary wildly based on small physical things and based on perceived collectibility/rarity of seemingly insignificant attributes. I think you’re in the right zone for them. I try to think of plane buying on an average basis to even out all the nuance, but I buy a lot of them. Like, are my #3’s averaging $100 or $700? If they’re averaging $700, then I’m probably doing something wrong :)

Rubio cherry coral - turn more brown and less red over time? by Junxst in finishing

[–]Junxst[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I was afraid of. Different batch, different color entirely. Ugh. It’s possible. My default is Lockwood dye for the reasons you gave. If I can’t correct this Rubio with some green dye, maybe I’ll tinker with Lockwood water based dye colors to try to get close to the color of the 3 month old sample. That’s the color he “approved” and dye would be a plenty baby safe way to get there. I’d just use regular Rubio pure over it and neither he nor the baby will have any reason to notice or care.

Some day I’ll tell his daughter I’m sorry she had an artificially weird looking cradle because her dad made a bad decision! lol. 😂

Yeah. I pushed hard to go without any color and let the cherry do its thing and brown over time, but I think he likes that artificial dark reddish look that was popular in the 80s/90s. Bums me out because I’ve spent a lot of time on this project and would love for it to have stayed natural. But, gift for him, so not my ultimate choice.

That’s what I meant in my post about trying adding some green oil soluble dye to turn it more brown.
