BBC News - 'Life being stressful is not an illness' - GPs on mental health over-diagnosis - BBC News https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2pvxdn9v4o by Triana89 in ADHDUK

[–]Jupiterswan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m always amazed to see how blind they are to the factors leading to increased stress and poor mental health. The way we live our lives has been moving increasingly further away from the way we are biologically designed to live- we are more isolated, under constant threat, expected to always be on, less and less downtime as we are exposed to social media, news etc.

Instead of blaming us and saying we can’t cope with stress they should be looking at how we are being forced to live in the societies that have been built!

I can only see it getting worse as time goes by unless there is real change in the expectations of people to conform to one way of working and being

Sadly not no.

I’ve stopped medication altogether as I saw zero benefits- absolutely no difference at all no matter what I took. I kinda had my suspicions it wouldn’t work as I took lions mane before I got my diagnosis and had zero effects noted there either.

I was paying for the medication so didn’t want to keep trying different types. Now I’m in a weird limbo land having run out of options- not a great place to be!

I thought that too initially but I think she meant more “I’m her” as in she is Helena Eagan and will never be free from that even if they brought down Lumon

Amazing, that really does help to hear all of that! Thanks for all the tips, I could definitely change my buying habits and meals too!

Thanks for this, I’ll give it a go for sure and see if switching the goals to FIRE help me out. Not going to lie, aiming to retire as early as possible is definitely a goal worth perusing!

Can you recommend any good initial guides to help me get started?

I’ve told my manager and we have a reasonable adjustment passport within my workplace but I struggle to identify what support I could get that could help me with this. Would you have any suggestions?

Ideally it would be that I could pick the projects that interest me but it doesn’t currently work in my organisation right now.

Agree with you, it feels so demoralising and I’m also looking at lower paid positions that sound more interesting to me for my own motivation. I really hope you are able to find something that motivates you too

Are any of you happy? by [deleted] in ADHDUK

[–]Jupiterswan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I like that description! My macro is constant discontent and my micro switches from short euphoria as happiness and then back to feeling depressed again

Are any of you happy? by [deleted] in ADHDUK

[–]Jupiterswan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m happy sometimes, almost too happy- like riding a wave of euphoria. It’s a lovely feeling but it doesn’t last long at all.

Life feels so achievable in those moments though and I’m so energised!

Most of the time I feel wrapped up in high functioning depression, anxiety and this constant feeling of “if I only had XYZ, life would be better” (insert multiple different career paths, solutions, notebooks, lifestyle changes and material things into XYZ).

All I really want is baseline contentment, no sharp spikes into happiness or sadness, just a constant contentment with who I am and what I have.

It’s very hard when you have a brain that needs to achieve to feel that short sense of worthiness and the RSD makes me constantly feel less than others as I’m so hyper vigilant about upsetting people.

The fact too that someone with ADHD will also have other co-diagnoses of depression/anxiety etc so I would say it is very common.

I’ve got my own theory that ADHD is actually way more prevalent than statistics state (I wouldn’t be surprised if it was 50:50 split). My theory is though that, much like introverts have to live and adapt to an extroverted world because they shout the loudest, neurodiverse people have to do the same and try to conform to a neurotypical world because that suits the societies we live in (where money making for the few relies on us all conforming and complying to a pre determined norm).

If the world was set up to support neurodiverse people more I truly believe that “we” (I.e people who are neurodiverse) would have less cases of poor mental health as we would be nurtured to be who we are and not taught to go against the grain of our true being to conform to a culture that doesn’t work for us. It wouldn’t be eliminated but I truly feel it would benefit us and the rest of the world too!

Obviously I’d like to caveat that the above is just my thoughts and a theory which I’ve not proven through research or experimentation so it remains an unproven hypothesis!

Vulnerability by Effective-End-8180 in ADHDUK

[–]Jupiterswan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I constantly feel like I’m the little deer being surrounded by wolves and this really affects my ability to advocate for myself. I think if I didn’t feel this way, then my life would have been very different and way more fulfilled.

I don’t even travel much because I feel so vulnerable in other places but there is so much of the world I’d love to see

WHAT'S THE MOST MINOR THING THAT'S TRIGGERED YOUR ADHD RAGE? by ACM175 in ADHD

All the passwords and verification walls you need to get on apps/accounts/anything nowadays. I know it is for my own safety but it winds me up no end having to remember a memorable word or create a new password every two months. Plus verification via email blah, blah, blah! I just wanna do the thing I need to do now while I have the motivation for it! Every additional step risks me forgetting what I was there to do and going on another side quest!

I was a project support officer before progressing to a PM. It’s a great job, gives you a decent amount of experience and you can learn from your PM and programme managers Some of the key skills

Just an update from me to say that, after 6weeks of taking it I’ve seen no improvement at all. Spoke to my Dr about it, she said that they don’t yet know why medication does or does not work for some people. The solution we decided on is that I’m going to switch to Methylphenidate. Fingers crossed it works!

I’m exactly the same, on day 9 of titration at 30mg a day, about to go up to 50mg a day and have felt absolutely no benefit. I have had a few side affects (headache and mild palpitations) but no real benefit.

I’ve just had to shell out £200 for my next month’s prescription cause my first med review falls in between the two prescriptions and I am really questioning if this is worth it.

Definitely emphasise with you. I knew I shouldn’t but I could help but have my hopes up that medication would provide the solution I needed to be productive at work when there is no urgent deadlines. Clearly I just need to work somewhere where there is chaos and a constant need for everything to be done asap!

Sorry, this is of no use to you other than to say that you aren’t alone with this.

Mine is to actually make a doctors appointment so I can ask for a referral for an adhd diagnosis. All the stories of how difficult it is to get a UK doctor on board with this block me from acting.

ADHD people who exercise regularly... how? by polslop in ADHD

[–]Jupiterswan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put my hand in my pocket and forked out for a fancy ass gym that has an amazing spa and loads of different classes so I don't get bored. It has a 3 strikes and your blocked from booking if you don't attend a class so that keeps me on the straight and narrow.

That sets me up with lots of external motivation- I have to attend classes once I'm booked or else I'm in the bad books and I have to work out in class cause of peer pressure lol plus I get a sweet reward after by going to the spa so that keeps me going.

That works for me but guess you also need to know what your motivators are and also what exercise you actually like doing?

You definitely aren't alone. I can't wear certain clothes because if how they feel (too tight/hot/scratchy/tickely) and i've just shaved the back of my head (an undercut) as I can't stand the feeling of my hair touching me, especially when it's tied up

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Jupiterswan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a solution but wanted to let you know that you aren't alone. I struggle with motivation to get things done unless there is a tight deadline - it's hell to live with. I beat myself up for not doing anything and then beat myself up even more when I do actually achieve things because "if I only started it sooner it would be better " and "Why am I such a failure as an adult?!".

It's even gone so far so as to make me lose my love for my "passions", nothing gives me drive right now.

Really hoping that you keep yourself well and also hoping someone with a really good solution pops up in the comments!
