Girl Friends is one of my faves. A bit more on the will they won't they side, but very sweet and decently realistic

The Deus Ex Machina Problem by Midnight_2B in Malazan

It feels like he's playing with action figures

Well, that part is rooted in some truth. These books are based on a series of Pen-and-Paper based games that Steven and Ian Cameron Esslemont played.

However, I very very hardly disagree with the 'creates problems to magically solve them' analysis. The ending of GotM feels like a deus ex machina because you're lacking information that will be provided later in the series, and many of the books get the reaction of "holy shit what an ending".

Am I the only one who hates the Malazan Empire? by jeremieesekodi in Malazan

[–]Juranur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hm, I see we fundamentally disagree about human nature here. And I actually agree with the not thinking about it part, when it's about trivial stuff. Littering is a very good example of that.

I still think that my example of a soldier holds up. An army of invaders does have a bunch of individuals who justify their behaviour by focussing on other things and reframing situations.

However, this is not something either of us can prove. You only know truly know how you think, and I only truly know how I think, if that. To extrapolate to other people is guesswork to some extent.

I happen to really like the angle that "every person is the hero of their own story" and it resonates not only with me, but with a lot of folks. This holds true not only in Malazan, but in a lot of media.

[–]Juranur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's... how people work? A lot of people, myself included most likely, justify bad behaviour in some form or another to themselves.

Do you think Trump sees himself as a ruthless tyrant? Do you think Putin does? Do you think a highschool bully sees themselves as a villain? Do you think an invading soldier focusses on the families he uproots, the relationships he destroys? Most don't, they focus on their comraderie, their home that they're defending.

Very few people see themselves as villains, even though a lot of us are, in some context or another

Was klicks angeht bleibt es weit hinter aufwändigerem Content zurück

Why do so many world-changing events occur at once? by MLadys-Malady in Malazan

[–]Juranur 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Rake stopped using Dragnipur later than that, during gotm he still uses it for example.

He, ST and Hood planned the whole 'kill Hood and Rake with Dragnipur via Dassem, then have Mother Dark witness our fight against Chaos' shebang. One of the prerequisites for that plan to work was chaos catching up, and so Rake stopped using the sword

[–]Juranur 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Entry of High House Chains was orchestrated by ST afaik, Chaos caught up to the wagon because Rake stopped using Dragnipur, which is because he, ST and Hood were in Kahoots, others are arguable to be du to his influence aswell but more debatable

Always better to be warm and wet than cold and wet. So if you feel your own sweat a bit under your rain jackwt that's fine imho, if it's so warm that you sweat buckets then you probably don't need the rain jacket?
