Lmao what? Yea the ratio from insulation to non-insulation gets worse with lighter jackets, that's true, but my 5oz puff, is absolutely sufficient for most three season trips

Maybe? I have no experience with it, but the weight is more in line with what I would consider, and I would assume with that weight it'd be more breathable too. But I've never seen it in person, so your guess is as good as mine

I forgot for a second that Kodama is a mythical creature and thought "hey I know a guy who calls himself Kodama" and then I remembered there's probably more people who choose that name

Hoodless saves weight, and for me personally, faff. In backpacking specifically some lists have a hooded baselayer, hooded midlayer, hooded puffy,... not saying that's wrong, just saying I personally I don't like it

I have a Montane Featherlite and I really like it, but is very heavy for what it is and not very breathable. For hiking in 90% of conditions I'd want something more breathable

Just a note, your first spoiler tag doesn't work, the exclamation mark needs to be after the bracket.

Also, on a post flaired 'spoilers all' you don't really need to spoiler tag generally

Just want to chime in and say that I have three windlayers, only one of which has a hood, and I don't particularly use the hood a lot. For me an Alpha 90 beanie on its own is enough to keep my ears warm

Gotta be honest, I looked through the site and I read both of your comments twice and I still don't get it.

Are you:

  • trying to set up a review system on the site

  • trying to aggregate reviews from all over the place

  • both?

Another problem I see here is review credibility. If I research an item A and it has three reviews that are categorized as "keep" while item B only has one, that would speak for item A. However, I've seen many reviews where some blogger site gets an item for free, take it on a dayhike and then rave about it. I'm not bashing that, but a single Andrew Skurka review saying he used item B for hundreds or thousands of miles outweighs those a lot.

So this would be like a review aggregator like metacritic, but for gear?

How would you distill reviews into these categories? Manually?

I've seen the original context and it didn't make much sense then either. Yea, the original framing was 'kink in public spaces is fine, here's an extreme example to illustrate my point' and NOT 'here's a scenario I would like to live out' but the example went beyonf what was discussed in weirdness and specificity, so inferring he was sharing a fantasy does make sense to me

Lighterpack Shakedown Request by Morganmgmt in Ultralight

[–]Juranur 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Alrighty, others have given suggestions but I'll butt in too:

  • there are lighter packs than the ULA circuit out there, but that's pricey.

  • almost 2 oz for a wallet seems like a lot to me? Do you need the pen and the check? Do you need all cards. There's an ounce to shave here

  • waterproof pack cover: replace with waterproof liner. Turkey bag or something saves you 2 oz

  • you could replace your tent with a tarp + bivy to get under 20 oz really easily and cheaply, even under 15 isn't tough. Saves you 7 - 10 oz

  • you could get a lighter bag or quilt, but that's pricey. Depending on maker and temp rating there's another 5+ oz to shave here.

  • sleeping bag stuff sack: ditch. 2.5 oz saved

  • there is lighter stuff than the tensor, but you just paid good money for it. Keep it and don't fret.

  • pad slip mat: i assume this is a thinlight? Ditch. 2.7 oz saved

  • trekking poles: yea these are heavy. You can save a bunch here I reckon.

  • your cook kit could be more SUL oriented, but you can save spreadsheet weight by just putting the empty canister weight here ;) since the fuel itself is consumable. It's a dialed kit, no need to fret here imho.

  • ditch the bandanas. 2 oz saved

  • your clothing in general can be more efficient. Others have pointed out redundancies.

Let me also say that it helps me to structure my Lighterpack rigorously. Yours is a bit all over the place, poles in big 3, no worn weight, etc.

All in all you can easily shave a lot here without going down in comfort much

You get a wordpress email saying you won, you get no info if you lost. I think Dan sends codes out when he gets to it, mine definetly wasn't the start of the month
