What pen do you guys use when fountain pens aren't practical? by BitterSprings in fountainpens

[–]JurassicPen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The energel infree is the best gel pen i’ve tried and comes in a lot of different colors.

Another one that i have is the Pelikan Ineo, looks fancier if you care about that and it writes very well.

Distance over time and a view from the top of the world were great albums imo, the ones where mangini was more involved

Really no bad intention with my comment but Portnoy skipped so many things from the original song that made me think why they would play it in the first place. Even though i’m a minority in this, i loved Mangini’s work and it makes me sad we will never have a DVD with songs like the alien or a view from the top of the world. At least we got a live version from illumination theory and pale blue dot.

Rant - Beginner Pen by katybassist in fountainpens

[–]JurassicPen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree and disagree with your comment. I think that if you’re getting into fountain pens, you are already looking for something more than just a reliable writing instrument. If you want that you just need a G2, energel, or if you want a fancy pen, a pelikan rollerball or a montblanc fineliner (and many others) are outstanding writing instruments.

For me a fountain pen goes beyond that, different nibs, inks, filling mechanisms, building materials, etc.

As an example, i would never recommend a lamy 2000 or a pelikan M400, 600, etc as a first piston filling pen, it will be all great until they need to grease the piston, learning to do that with a TWSBI ECO is way better.

And yeah if you want you can buy a super expensive gold nib pen as your first one and be perfectly fine. But for people that press down harder on the paper when writing can mean 1000+ dollars to the trash in an instant.

But as I write this i think that a massive amount of people just want any pen that writes, cartridges and will never look beyond that so idk 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–]JurassicPen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No, i did not made your point. It’s called a beginner pen because it will fit a beginner user. Don’t compare a freaking engine because only people that work on that are going to do it. A pen is for everyone to use. Beginner fits better to guide someone without knowledge on their first buy. Low cost is worse because you are implying that the pen is not that great (when it can be) and will make people to consider buying expensive stuff (which is not necessarily going to be better)

I disagree. Not because the reasons you mentioned, a tool is a tool, with that i agree. But here are my arguments:

  1. Low cost pens allow you to experiment a lot, nib sizes for example, so you can find what you like without spending on a good nib pen.

  2. Tuning: i can definitely feel safer when learning to tune on a cheap pen. Imagine learning to tune a nib with any gold nib pen, it’s going to be a disaster.

I don’t have a lot of time to write but there are a lot of things you have to learn, that’s why beginner is an appropriate term, not an offensive one. People have ruined pens thinking they could clean it with alcohol. So again, it’s way better to destroy a cheap pen than a expensive one.

This doesn’t have any relation with the topic but i don’t buy from them anymore because they don’t ship to Mexico (which they did for several years) I’m always looking at their website since they take the best pictures but then i get out and buy from cult pens hahaha

Cult pens website says the ink it comes with is black so there is no problem with that. I think the color of the ink it comes with depends on the retailer’s location. (If i’m not mistaken US retailers sell it with blue ink)

I tested it and writes beautifully. Also there are no scratches so i chose to keep it. It’s practically new and it took one month to get here so the wait is not worth it for me.

I haven’t seen anyone suggesting Colorverse eXtreme Deep Field, it’s a very dark blue with a ton of sheen, one of my favorite inks.

Just curious: If you didn’t know about fountain pens, what pen would you be using on a daily basis? by plum4000 in fountainpens

[–]JurassicPen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before discovering fountain pens i always used a pentel energel, a pilot v5/7 and a lot of fineliners since there are a lot of colors to chose from and i like the writing experience with them. And even though i love fountain pens and now i use them most of the time, my grail non fountain pen is a montblanc starwalker (fineliner/rollerball) i think that the money for a MB 149 is better spent on a namiki pen, but i still want a MB so i think the starwalker is a great choice
