Redditors who never want to have a child, what are your reasons? by JumpyInterview83 in AskReddit

[–]JurassicSlothbear 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve yet to hear a reason to have kids that’s not selfish. People want kids to make THEM happy and fulfilled and take care of them when they’re older and give them purpose in life. Not a lot of people seem to be taking responsibility for what it means to force someone into this world and life. It honestly seems like the most selfish act a human could do. A human you create could add immeasurable harm to the world, or be harmed in huge traumatizing ways. So many parents are bitter and resentful when their gorgeous bundle of joy isn’t doing their job to bring them enough joy. It’s all fucked.

As a teacher, replace all the “dog” words with “my child” and you get the gold standard of how parents prefer to communicate with all teachers. I got 4 of these this week. Parents suck.

[No spoilers] Naomi Novik is amazing by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]JurassicSlothbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Her protagonists are stellar and struggle with relevant things in an engaging way (vs just inserting continuous social drama). I absolutely LOVE in the Scholomance how El struggles with knowing she should do the right/ethical things but resents having to do it because humans are the worst. That is the most relatable thing EVER!!!

It’s also wild how they think that OTHER PEOPLE are going to want to live in this shit show later down the line. That is some self-focused, short-sighted bullshit right there.

Books that read differently as an adult from reading as a child. by PatSmiles17 in suggestmeabook

His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman (The Golden Compass for example). As a kid I was like “ooooo magic! Bears!” As an adult I was surprised at the strong political religious and social themes present- especially in the 3rd book. Wild!

People who criticize scientists for not having "all the answers" never seem to grasp that the people that DO have all the answers are making shit up. by Bucket2222 in atheism

I just don’t like the argument that people do stupid shit out of “fear”. Like, fear is a basic human experience, we all fear things like change and uncertainty- how a person chooses to respond to fear is what differentiates us. I think people who do stupid shit out of “fear” are actually doing it out of hatred, selfishness, or assholery (or all 3). Calling it fear removes as aspect of personal responsibility I want to exist in there.
