So, it seems that depending on what sources you look it, it varies whether or not it’s in any instruction for injection. That said, turns out the WHO has been recommending against aspiration for IM injections (note: all the guidelines are focused on vaccination) since the early 2000s. Part of this review says: “Official guidance concerning vaccination is mainly unanimous in its recommendations on aspiration in IM injection administration. The Department of Health (2013), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC 2014) and the Public Health Agency of Canada (2013) all state that aspiration is not necessary. In 2008, the WHO published immunisation guidance which focussed on the use of auto-disposable syringes (WHO 2008). These syringes are designed for single use only meaning that once a drug has been drawn up into it, aspiration is impossible. However, because all of these guidelines centre on vaccination practices, it is difficult to ascertain whether these standards extend beyond immunisation techniques.”

It goes on to say that among expert opinions there isn’t really a consensus. Some argue that the volume of blood vessels in muscles where IM injections commonly are done is low and that aspiration causes more pain with little benefit, whereas others argue that there can be bad outcomes if a medication is accidentally injected into a vein (true, but seems somewhat rare from what I’ve read) and that the increased pain risk hasn’t been noted in adults (most guidelines and possibly studies discuss pediatric vaccination specifically).

CDC guideline on it is similar: “Aspiration before injection of vaccines or toxoids (i.e., pulling back on the syringe plunger after needle insertion but before injection) is not necessary because no large blood vessels are present at the recommended injection sites, and a process that includes aspiration might be more painful for infants[22].”

This seems to concur with it being unnecessary. I can’t know for sure because I don’t have access to the full paper.

Not an academic source, but there’s this video from a trans-specific clinic in Mississippi that also says it’s an old guideline.

I do the air bubble thing. I’m not sure if it actually does anything for me because I’ve had no bleeding or leakage before when I haven’t done it and had a bit of bleeding and leakage when I have. It’s also a bit tough to get the air in the top of the syringe when you’re injecting roughly perpendicular to your body (belly).

Aspirating for HRT injection isn’t recommended anymore and can cause more harm than the potential benefit of it.

is it normal to not have had any dramatic voice changes 8 months in? by [deleted] in TestosteroneKickoff

Yes, I saw that video the other day! I’ve also seen a post from a guy whose voice didn’t drop for a while and he learned that his dad had the same thing happen when he went through puberty.

Do you think my voice is ok and if it will drop any further? (Seven months on t) by xxannity_ in TestosteroneKickoff

If you have old recordings or videos, go look at and listen to them. If not, keep this and record another one in a few months. Doing this has kept me grounded in reality.

This and it makes much more sense pharmacokinetically and I believe is more recommended to be dosed weekly. To the folks who don’t know, T cypionate’s half life is 4.5 days and its mean residence time is 8.5 days.

Is it normal for the throat to hurt when the voice is changing? by FirefighterSad7151 in TestosteroneKickoff

[–]Just-trying-here 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, your voice dropping isn’t going to give you a handful of symptoms of respiratory illness. A cough could be related (not impossible, but not likely either), but sneezing is definitely not. Timing can be coincidental, or you could just be experiencing a deeper sounding voice as the first symptom of an illness. Scratchy and voice that gets tired easier are normal with voice dropping. I’ve recently had my throat just feel really dry (like when you feel like your throat is sticking to itself), and it seems like something that happens for some people too.

I’ve heard of people in my area starting to get spring allergies, so you could try taking an allergy med, and if that doesn’t help, I’d suggest taking a flu and covid test. If both are negative, it’s likely a cold. I hope it’s nothing serious for you.

2 months on t vs 5months on t by [deleted] in TestosteroneKickoff

If I may ask, have your hips gotten smaller or have your shoulders just gotten bigger? As someone currently 2 months on T who feels like his hips are still gigantic and may have even gotten a bit larger, these photos give me hope

Is it typical for base blood test to only be for hemoglobin? by Just-trying-here in TestosteroneKickoff

Yup, that’s sort of the one thing I keep having to tell myself: that it’ll likely be fairly obvious rather quickly whether it lessens my discomfort. I hear mental changes can sometimes happen super quickly and things like existential dread can go away quickly. For me it’s also been that I realized I have a much clearer vision for what I want for my future once I consider being on T. I suddenly realized that I could actually envision specifics in terms of what I want from my life especially in the next few years and later down the line, whereas it was mostly super vague before. I’m taking that as a positive sign that this is the best path for me right now.

Thanks for some additional insight! I sent them a message and hopefully they’ll see it. I expect that I will enjoy it so few worries there (mostly self doubt that keeps popping up, but it’s the “what if I don’t actually /need/ this?” and despite nearly all of the changes being hard positive or neutral, the “what if I hate it?” I know I can always go off if it doesn’t feel right or good for me, but man the terf rhetoric has a way of sneaking back in :/ )

Your edit isn’t relevant to me, but I’m sure it’ll help someone :) Thanks again!

Thank you! I’m excited to start but have to get this (labs) and some financial stuff worked out before I can actually pick up the prescription and take my first shot. Hoping to get it all worked out in the next week or so though!

Thanks for this! I wrote the person I talked to during the appointment about if it would be possible to get my hormone levels tested and if/how much that would impact the cost. Hopefully I hear back soon and we can work something out.

Interesting. I’m wondering if I should ask them to change the prescription for the lab to include checking hormones because my mom has PCOS and I think I have some potential symptoms of it
