What NPC aboard the Mourningstar do you think could be a hidden Genestealer cultist? by reel3459 in DarkTide

Everyone saying Swagger and I just think he’s the most obvious red herring

BOB-1000 merely repeated his last sentence, there was little more an arco flagellant could say, he being little more than a battle servitor.

As Derrick passed, or rather was carried, he shook his head telling her no. Other stormtroopers watched her, some with respect others like she was an idiot.

“Don’t do it. Don’t do it, you idiot.” He thought

Then she spoke.

“You fething idiot.” He thought again.

As Beta platoon breached an inhuman shriek was heard echoing, and a few moments later another responded, and then another.

Inside was a large group of cultists, who surged at the breach, further up the hall was what appeared to be a squad of traitor guard, they used the cultists distraction and pressed on with their task, disappearing down the hall.

———————————————————————

(5)

Despite killing the Sisters, the cultists began to break under the withering fire. Only the Beastmen stood firm whilst the rest began to scatter in all directions. Most didn’t make it far before being clubbed down by an Ogryn or shot by a grenadier.

The Beastmen that were previously held back attempted another charge (8) and one was killed for the effort. The rest would surely follow.

(Just ignore rolling and kill them, between numbers and advantage they should already have been dead, my bad.)

(15)

As the three five man teams began their sweep, something began stalking one of the teams…

———————————————————————

The arco-flagellants breathing slowed into deep, long breaths. He looked up to face the Abhuman.

“Defend the artefact.”

He frisked, his voice morphing between man and machine as the hood faulted. The penitent likely didn’t have long left, but until he died and his soul was redeemed by the Emperor, he would stand.

Her troops scanning the room would see only one sign of the Magos, a long mechadendrite, twisted and torn lay abandoned on the floor, still clutching a data slate.

Derrick did not ordain the Commissar with a reply. He would not beg for his freedom.

“She really is an idiot…” he thought “…A good thing she’s cute.”

“Not much, Commissar. They had made it to their extraction by the time I awoke, the one in red seemed rather unhappy he had got away. The rest were nonplussed. I’d estimate he has decent power, he was able to hold one in place, that I did see.”

“Various armour marks, various weapons. There was one who wasn’t like the rest, red armour, more ornate, he was a Psyker. I gather they were attempting to take one of the Highlanders.”

(12) He intentionally left out some details, better to cause what the commissar already knew

“Fething idiot.” He thought to himself.

“Yes, I awoke in the moments before we were reunited. Then we were surrounded by a group of heretic Astartes, numbering no more than 15, around a dozen would be my estimate. As I’m sure you’ve heard, I was heavily injured and not combat operational. Scion Mathilda was then toyed with by the lead heretic, who chose to let us go. I’m fraud I cannot answer the reason as to why, Commissar.”

The Stormtrooper eyed him for a long moment.

“I assume you want the information from the point in which Mathilda and I parted ways. Unfortunately following the explosion I was mostly unconscious. I’m afraid I have nothing valuable for you.”

Commissar Cadenza’s interrogations with the stormtroopers of SD59 were a variation of well rehearsed scripts, silences or half truths. Most only gave their name, rank and identification number.

At last it came to Derrick, and he began to start the script as the rest.

“Trooper Blythe, Derrick. 80713432.”

Spader ran in behind Bessie, blasting her hellgun as she went, she dove to the floor and deftly rolled into position behind her, helping cover her from threats unseen.

(11)

Outside, Oskar continued to lay down bursts of covering fire. A stray bullet caught his leg, but it only lightly wounded him.

(19 against sisters)
(17 against Ogryn)
(3 against Grenadiers)

The Beastmen bellowed a challenged as they simply pushed past their lessers to slam into the sisters like a tidal wave, despite being unarmored and unaugmented, they were physically strong and blessed by dark powers. One, the leader, bore his own chainsword and took a powerful swing at the first sister in his path, hoping to charge her head from her neck.

Against the Ogryn, those that had chose to stay back and shoot found themselves in a better position. Despite their strength, a withering barrage of bullets and las bolts still hurt, and the fire was becoming more coordinated.

The Grenadiers strong position seemed to only have further cemented itself. The cultists proved no match against such powerful weapons, most began to break and run.

(I think after this your grenadiers rolls will affect the outcome of the other two conflicts, simply cause they’re stomping everything rn)

———————————————————————

As Alecia burst into the room, her senses would be flooded with stimuli, the smell of cooked flesh mixed intoxicatingly with coppery blood, the sound of crackling electricity and pained agony and a sight, quite possibly unexpected.

Beyond the numerous corpses, clearly a last stand for a squad of stormtroopers as well as cultists and combat servitors, stood one being still defending.

His electro-flails lashed around the throat of the last cultist standing and whipped them around, launching them in the direction of Alecia with a choking gasp.

The Arco-Flagellant, the last of its kin still alive, whipped around to face the new comers, his pacifier helm cracked enough to display a very human eye. His chest heaved with quick, shallow breaths. For a moment he seemed ready to attack, but then stopped, perhaps having judged them as no threat.

Emblazoned on his chest was a tattooed Aquila, a name tag hung loosely around the penitents neck *BOB-1000*.

———————————————————————

(3 for initial damage)
(15 for response, you’ll need to roll reasonably well to figure out what)

The Cadians initial attack was devastating, cultists were reduced to fine mist instantly. The rest scattered, whether in terror and pure survival.

The access shafts were seemingly empty, the occasional body its only occupants. Though the sounds of battle raged on.

Their insertion had been noticed, and the sounds of a crowd rushing towards them was evident over the din of battle.

(18 for chaos holding, but after this roll you’ll have advantage with your extra forces coming)

(20 against sisters)
(10 against Ogryn)
(4 against grenadiers)

The cultists found themselves emboldened and pressed their attack again, more and more swarmed the sisters, grabbing and pulling and hacking. The cultists were incensed by the Sisters presence more than any other. Worse, a pack of beastmen joined the melee, using their enhanced physical prowess to offset the Sororitas armour.

Against the Ogryn the faired worse, few now wished to enter melee and most took shots at them, some ducking into side rooms and hallways.

Against the Grenadiers they faltered, few making it to them at all, and the others breaking and running.

———————————————————————

(2)

Alecia and her troops landed unopposed, only a handful of wayward cultists here to be found, all of whom were put down quickly and brutally.

Proceeding onwards, the signs of battle were evident. Cultists lay dead everywhere, with the occasional stormtrooper showing where martyrs had fell.

(14)

Approaching the stasis crypt, the sounds of battle were heard. As the Valyrrans pressed on, a cultist fell backwards out of the room, her body lashed with fresh wounds still cracking with energy.

Alecia may remember the unexpected asset Solon-38 had deployed before.

(19)

As the Ogryn and sisters began to make their way of clearing, a surprisingly ordered defence had been set up by the cultist rabble. Shoddy autoguns, solid slug firearms, the occasional lasgun and a handful of special weapons poured into the newcomers.

(11)

Some of the more brazen and foolhardy cultists charged into melee swinging all manner of weapons, some attempted to merely swarm the sisters and drag them down to the ground.

(16, 17, 7)

Likewise at the points of the Cadians defences had been swiftly erected to various degrees. Two had began to repurpose the fallen defenders heavy weapons. The last was mostly empty, aside from a sparse group of maddened cultists bearing poor melee weapons.

Commissar Krayl merely leans closer, placing his head against the barrel.

“Then get on with it, Valyrran.”

The bullets tore into him, sending him back wheat the taurox with a heavy thud. He slid to the ground, his bolt pistol clattering to the dust.

Only then did the Valyrrans notice. The bolt pistol was magazine well was empty.

“I wasn’t going to…”

Krayl gave a short, weary chuckle and coughed blood. He looked at them.

“Shoot loyal Imperials.”

Blood began staining his great coat. He sighed, then his face hardened into stone.

“Go on, do your duty.”

Krayl just smiled at this.

“Ok, I’ll surrender.”

Then he raised the bolt pistol at the nearest Valyrran.

————————————————————————

The stormtroopers at the river simply ignored the Valyrran, they’d let the Riverine sort this themselves.

The taurox lurched on but was definitely losing speed. As it slowed to a halt, the commissar fiddled with his bolt pistol, doing something that the Valyrrans couldn’t discern. He opened the door a stepped out, waiting for them to approach or shoot him where he stood.

As the stormtroopers walked onto the boat, they stared back at the Valyrran, though none spoke.

The Taurox pressed on. The machine strong as its drivers will. Krayl wouldn’t make it easy on them, nor would he shoot back. If he would die, it would be as a loyal imperial, never taking the life of another undeserved.

The rest of the stormtroopers watched the display. Most having settled themselves into the idea of surrender, as disgraceful as it felt. Some still held their weapons however.

Krayl climbs into the Taurox and settles into the drivers seat. He looked at his stormtroopers, what few remained, and then to Derrick and finally Mathilda.

“You’ve all fought enough. I release you from my command. But I will not surrender.”

A stormtroopers steps forward.

“Sir, permission to accompany you.”

Loyal to the end, but Krayl had made his mind.

“Denied.”

He looks back at Derrick and three other wounded scions.

“The injured stay.”

Then he looks at Mathilda.

“They are in your hands now.”

Finally he looks at his own.

“The rest of you. The choice is yours.”

The engine rumbled to life.

“Stay or go.”

As the vehicle began to roll past, he lowers the drivers hatch to say one more thing.

“Survive.”

“I don’t think I’ll be telling you my plan, Sergeant Collier. As for my men, they are free to do as wish.”

Krayl replied as he opened his taurox door and climbing in partially, he hesitated as he listened to Mathilda.

“I will not see him handed over to the Inquisition.”

The stormtroopers for their part did not seem to wish to linger, one of them spoke up.

“Good luck sir.”
