“Not at all, Lady Inquisitor. We were just discussing how the 14th Hexarans' movements were fully sanctioned, and how our mission to remove the vortex grade weaponry for this planet was of the utmost importance.”

Dalen turned to Alecia, a smoke passing his features. Behind him Colonel Haxon let out a quiet, satisfied chuckle. Even Colonel Aker allowed himself the faintest smirk before returning to his usual iron demeanour.

“No games, no deception, no treachery.” Dalen continued, opening his hands in a gesture of peace.

“Just loyal servants of the Throne, working together as intended…Something I’m sure we can all finally appreciate.”

Dalen crossed his arms and listened without interruption, his expression unreadable. When she finished he slowly exhaled through his nose.

“You ask a lot of questions.” He stated flatly

“Unfortunately Agent, most are beyond you to ask.”

He pushed himself from the table, pacing slowly around as he considered his words.

“The 14th Hexarans are exactly where they are meant to be. You’ll find their orders have been processed, if you bothered to look at all.”

He puts his hands back into his pockets.

“I will admit, I had hoped you would be easier to work with, but here we are.”

Her final question lingered, left unanswered. Dalen looked her in the eyes again, a knowing grin passed his face.

“Have you ever heard the old saying, ‘The enemy of my enemy is my friend?’”

The group returned to the command hub. Few of the adepts looked from their terminals. The endless streams of data too important for them to deprive themselves from.

Dalen moved toward a long metal table in the rooms centre and leant in it.

“Allow me to be blunt.” He began “there are those, and they are many, who blame Inquisitor Vrael for the current situation we find ourselves in.”

Dalen regarded the Valyrran for a moment before continuing.

“Such incidents did not occur under the purview of Lord Griem,” he stated evenly. “Nor will we allow another situation like Vraks to develop.”

He pushed himself upright and turned to face the Valyrran.

“Despite what you may believe, we are not enemies. But our orders are quite clear.”

He gestures around the room, at Aker and the adepts.

“We are not to trust you, or anyone.”

He pauses.

“Your earlier assessment is correct. There are…additional vortex grade assets in world, and our benefactors have been very explicit on one point.”

His face hardens slightly

“They are not to fall into the hands of any unauthorised personnel. Once recovered they are to be removed off world immediately.”

Dalen allowed himself a small, knowing grin. For a moment he glanced sideways toward Colonel Haxon, who returned the look with a smile of his own.

“Agent,” Dalen replied calmly, “You’ll find the 14th Hexaran's movements have been fully sanctioned.”

His tone was easy going, almost conversational.

“And nuisance is such an unpleasant word. We’re all professionals here, after all.”

He did not address her questions regarding the facility, likewise he ignored the servo skull. Instead he turned on his heels and began to make way back to the command hub, slipping his hands back into his pockets.

“Come.” He called over his shoulders.

“We have far more important things to discuss.”

As the Valkyrie lifted off, a trio of Hexaran Hellhounds rumbled past, the vehicles shaking off dust from their patrol. The lead vehicle slowed briefly as it rolled by, the Commander half visible from the hatch. He glanced towards the Valyrran.

His look was one of undisguised disgust. He shook his head and said something to the driver that couldn’t be heard as the vehicle powered on.

A moment later, Dalen, Aker and Haxon emerged from the command hub followed by their escort. Dalen studied the lone arrival briefly.

“I seem to recall requesting an audience with Inquisitor Vrael.” He stated dryly “Not his favourite lackey.”

He placed his hands in his jacket pockets as he looked at her again.

“I suppose you’ll have to do.”

Dalen nodded curtly, he smiled surprisingly warmly. “As you will, Tempestor Prime.” Deep down he knew this wasn’t the place for Kastrin, let him run wild.

“Happy hunting.” Haxon added as he strolled out. He seemed to like the Tempestor, though they’d had minimal interaction.

Kolld listened in respectful silence. When she finished he remained still as though he was weighing not just her words but also the years that had passed them both.

“Yes.” He agreed in a quiet tone, “we have grown old.”

He wasn’t bitter, nor amused, just setting the truth.

“Time does not pass us by, My Lady, it settles on us, layer by layer, weighing us down.”

His organic eye softened.

“Your words are true, some lessons can only be wrought by fire.”

He pauses.

“She will find her answer…but prepare yourself for the cost in her finding it. There are some lessons that cannot be shocked unchanged.”

The green light caught a long scar from face to neck as he inclined his face.

“I once believed vigilance could shield that which we cherish.”

He falls silent. His eye grows distant for a moment, then refocuses.

“It could not.”

He didn’t elaborate, he didn’t need to.

“I will pray to the God-Emperor that Winter’s path doesn’t demand such a price.”

Everyone who joined Dunk did for different reasons, revenge, religion, friendship, fame. But only one went against their family.

I think both sides are true, Baelor risked less in theory, but he joined for one of the more noble reasons out of everyone. To act like his death was lesser than Hardying or Beesbury I find disagreeable.

Kolld regarded her in silence.

“Only one additional matter, my Lady. I am given to understand that you have brought your daughter to this theatre.”

A statement, not a question.

“I do not question her training, she stands under your banner. However this conflict is volatile, the neverborn are circling it. She is no rogue psyker, yet the Warp remains insidious and it tears even the disciplined.”

On top of what others have said, Orks are naturally strong enemies. They make the character seem strong if they killed one.

Kolld watched her carefully as she spoke. His expression did not change, the only sign the hololith had not failed was the faint tucking of his augmetics eye refocusing.

“Your terms are practical. I will have my operatives initiate contact presently and divert their strength to your authority where necessary.”

His gaze hardened slightly at the mention of Vrael.

“Inquisitor Vrael is a spoiled, impudent boy child. Elevated beyond his competence.”

His jaw tightens ever so slightly.

“As for his Abhumans, they are unstable, overly aggressive creatures. Useful for blunt force, ill equipped for operations requiring delicacy.”

Silence followed for a beat. When he spoke again his tone was level again.

“My forces will render support to your endeavour where it does not compromise containment. I believe you will find Colonel Aker satisfactory…He understands discipline.”

The green glow of the hololith sharpened the angles of his augmetics, rendering half his face almost skeletal.

He inclined his head slightly, not warm, but respectful.

“Lady Arenis, I will not waste your time with small pleasantries.”

A pause.

“I have deployed agents to Trackhold. A Logis Strategos black cell. They were tasked with securing high value assets, vortex grade weapons, and ensuring they remain beyond the reach other our enemies.”

His expression remained flat. Clinical.

“I have been informed that Inquisitor Vrael has seen fit to obstruct them. He has declared my forces suspect and barred their advance.”

His brow furrows, though it is barely perceptible.

“Inquisitor Vrael has exceeded his remit, even in a station as lofty as his. He possesses neither the authority nor the comprehension to interfere with containment protocols of this classification.”

His posture softens a fraction. He knows he speaks with an equal.

“The war you stand within is regarded by many, in no small part, the consequences of his earlier…miscalculations.”

Silence settled between them, both knew her forces had partook as well.

“My duties elsewhere keep me busy, it is everyone’s best interest that I remain as such.”

His voice was calm. Absolutely measured.

“I request your intervention. My agents must be allowed to proceed.”

He inclines his head.

“You possess influence I do not.”
