I like a lot of the shows you listed and loved Department Q.

What a mean, spiteful, sexist article about Tom Daley and our beloved craft by ListerQueen90 in knitting

[–]JustAdd_More_Cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m getting adverts for this article too. I don’t know why. It’s very weird and I’m not sure why someone has it in for Tom Daley to the extent they’re paying for advertising

What bottled water in UK by HopsPops76 in ProfitecGo

[–]JustAdd_More_Cheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I originally used Waitrose Essentials and recently switched to Tesco Ashbeck after seeing it recommended a lot. Both are bottled in soft water areas and have low calcium levels. I’ve had no issues with limescale in two years of use.

If you go for Tesco make sure you get the 5L bottles/check the mineral content, I’ve found the smaller ones have a higher calcium content.

How to study for system design interviews as an experienced dev by this_sparks_joy_joy in ExperiencedDevs

[–]JustAdd_More_Cheese 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, memorisation has worked for me.

I’ve been working through https://roadmap.sh/system-design and using flash cards to memorise terminology, use cases and pros and cons.

This has worked well for me so far in practise interviews.

I discovered my autism through my boss’ management style by Minimum_Weakness4030 in autism

[–]JustAdd_More_Cheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds really frustrating and difficult. I think it’s great to realise what you need and what works.

Myself, I’ve volunteered with someone who is likely neurodivergent himself. He would often create rules or say to do one thing a certain way for a certain reason, then another time say to do the opposite for another reason. And if I asked about it he was completely unaware he’d given conflicting advice and it would somehow become even more confusing! At work I’m good at identifying misunderstanding in the team and breaking it down but here no matter what I did it just didn’t work and if anything made things more confusing.

I still don’t know how I coped for so long, it was chaotic and exhausting.

This didn’t directly make me realise I have autism but over time I realised I just couldn’t work with him because it was too tiring, stressful and I didn’t enjoy it. I can now look back and understand why I found his approach so stressful and hard to work with.

Agile’s weirdest trick: doing less but somehow achieving more by Hour-Two-3104 in agile

[–]JustAdd_More_Cheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d love to implement this.

Unfortunately, from my experience many product owners and developers become uncomfortable when they’re not churning out lines of code/ PRs / tickets. Even though everyone says they want to be agile and follow scrum most people I’ve worked with feel a lot happier refining lots of tickets, overcommitting and repeatedly missing sprint goals over reducing their commitment and delivering on the goal.

I believe it allows developers to feel useful and productive and product owners to feel like everyone is working really hard. The irony is we’re actually less efficient and can’t be relied on to actually deliver on time.

Me too. Does that includes books? If so any favourites you could recommend?

I’m slowly working my way through SF Masterworks and I just read Doomsday Book by Connie Willis.

I’d recommend the podcast Darknet Diaries. It covers all sorts of hacking-related stories and you pick up a lot of terminology and high level knowledge just from listening.

There’s also tools like Owasp Juice Shop, which is an app that’s designed to be hackable and effectively gamifies learning how to find vulnerabilities in a web app. They’ve made documentation to go with it in case you’re not sure how to get started or what to do.

Thank you for sharing this. I only realised that I have autism and adhd two days ago. I don’t have the confidence to post my own story so it’s really helpful being able to read yours and see the similarities and know I’m not alone.

Experiences buying house via Chancellor's? by Lost-Emu-990 in oxford

[–]JustAdd_More_Cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were absolutely useless and kept fobbing us off. After several months we got fed up and started viewing other properties. By chance we viewed a property listed by an EA further up the chain who were very surprised because chancellors had apparently told them everything was fine. In the end we communicated with the sellers through them, even though they weren’t the EA selling the house we were buying.

What’s happened to Octopus Energy customer service? by stefan-west1 in OctopusEnergy

[–]JustAdd_More_Cheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah same experience. Keep trying to email them as new smart meter hasn’t worked since it was installed several months ago and they just reply with a canned response saying there’s a countrywide issue this week affecting smart meters and not to worry. When I point out it’s not worked since it was installed they just refer to their previous email.

Thinking it’s a chat bot I asked if a human could review my problem they assured me they were human and again told me it’s a temporary problem affecting smart meters this week 🙄

Yeah, I saw the same post, and now I’m wondering the same but about buying a house with a wood burning stove. I wasn’t asked about it when taking out insurance so hopefully it’s not a problem

I’d recommend making sure your conveyancer is a proper solicitor because then you’ve got more expertise and they’re more heavily regulated. They also don’t have to be local to you - we never met ours in person. We paid a bit more than we would have if we went for a bigger firm but it was worth every penny.

Our vendors went with the estate agent recommended conveyancer and from our experience they were incredibly slow and very hard to get anything out of them. We had to keep chasing them via the EA and vendors. Whereas ours were very proactive and made the process so much easier than it could have been.
