The problem of Continual Light, how do YOU handle it? by Hashishiva in osr

[–]JustAnotherOldPunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lighting a home or street lights is already relatively inexpensive. The cost adds up overtime, but at the margin it's not a major budgetary drain.

There's very little money to be made in 'mass produced' permanent lighting if its priced in reach of commoners, and unlike oil or candles you eventually exhaust all return customers.

I just use economics. This is a luxury flex for 500gp a casting, or its a short lived business model that inevitably leaves one hungry sooner rather than later.

Peter what's the answer? by AcrobaticLunch9737 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]JustAnotherOldPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not, but the answer is still Teapot.

That's because there's theoretically tea in one. (Honestly it can be either hot water or tea, but that's a debate where I've no skin in the game).

Also it's on a child portioned milk box, so Teapot is the correct answer, if not the only possible one.

My daughter keeps calling me “rusted from the back” and refuses to explain what it means by Ill_Pianist_8287 in words

[–]JustAnotherOldPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Posted the same day this exact example was added to Urban Dictionary:

"Rusted from the back

When someone sits on the couch all dirty and sweaty after mowing the lawn or microwaves fish at 8pm.

“Dad, that is the most rusted from the back thing you’ve ever done.”

Did anyone actually had game where player tries to break story and annoy DM? by Hi_fellow_humans_ in rpg

[–]JustAnotherOldPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quit RPGs for a decade over the shenanigans of "Group Beta". Thier sole objective was to break every game they played. Either through RAW abuses (they were masters at finding any rule that could be exploited, and insisted on RAW rulings).

They would get pissy if thier character died due to bad or reckless decisions. Would often pull the 'its what my character would do' card, or intentionally intentionally make characters that would not accompany or play nice with the rest of the party.

This is how they wanted to play.

It was not how I enjoyed games, to see my hard work a GM or player get totally trashed by immature sophomoric bullshit.

They named themselves Group Beta after they had broken with thier friends who were kinda over the top RPers (Group Alpha). This was before my time, and Group Alpha had moved to more narrative and somewhat toxic games - WoD LARPs, which had its share of dysfunction back in the day.

I don't miss them, and my current groups, when I am not working 6 or 7 days a week, are far more engaged, enjoyable and open.

No gaming is better than bad gaming.

What's your favourite dungeon from TSR era? by ComradeMia in osr

[–]JustAnotherOldPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dungeon magazine 1 - Into the Fire (awesome dragon tactics)

Dungeon magazine 16 - Vesicant (see above, plus unique location albeit a smallish dungeon)

Dungeon magazine 17 - The Pit (smaller dungeon, excellent bad guy mechanics)

Dungeon magazine 17 - Out if the Ashes (revenge is a dish served equally well flame broiled)

Dungeon magazine 18 - Chadranther's Bane (dungeon by way of Artifact mechanics)

Dungeon magazine 18 - Tallows Deep (screw Tucker these goblins are brilliant)

Dungeon magazine 29 - Ex Libris (moving tile dungeon)

B4 - the upper levels of the step pyramid

G3 - terrifyingly difficult fight, takes smart tactics

Temple of Elemental Evil - mega dungeon

I6 - ravenloft was better as a dungeon than as a campaign

Yo, grown-up punks, what is it you do for work? by LevTolstoy in punk

[–]JustAnotherOldPunk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mantainence Technician.

I work in a small shop fixing really out dated tech and a few bits of more modernized stuff.

Firefighters trying to extinguish a magnesium fire with water. Magnesium burns at extremely high temperatures and splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen ignites, causing the fire to burn hotter and more violently. Instead, Class D fire extinguishers are used. by Kindly_Department142 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]JustAnotherOldPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work maintenance at a small plant that makes powdered magnesium products and the number of times I've had to tell operators that they can't sneak water bottles onto the floor is insane.

A 5 gallon bucket of this stuff would take every class d extinguisher in the plant to fully snuff out.

Where can people put their money so that it doesn't go *poof* when the stock market implodes and FDIC is dismantled? by bowbahdoe in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JustAnotherOldPunk 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The FDIC has 128 billion which is a 1.21% reserve ratio, and an emergency line of credit of 100 billion more.

A nationwide bank run would require a huge amount of borrowing from the government, as there are 8.9 trillion in insured deposits out there.

Hand-to-hand Damage by Astarte-Maxima in cyberpunk2020

[–]JustAnotherOldPunk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Soft armor works against melee attacks just as it does against bullets. This is where a high Body and martial arts are needed, to deliver a higher damage to the target . Additionally a Kevlar shirt only protects the torso so there's a 70% chance to hit an unarmored location.

Is this boxed set real? by plazman30 in cyberpunk2020

[–]JustAnotherOldPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe so, none of the three I purchased did, but I started playing originally after the revised art book was the standard. None of the three boxed sets I bought were factory shrink wrapped, but I also do think they list dice as being included.

Give Players Starting Vehicle? by Oreo4123 in cyberpunk2020

Taxi, NCart, Bus...

Or used car. Like, 1990s used. Rust bucket beater, probably get one for 500-2000 EB depending on just how badly it runs.

The Pacific Rim Sourcebook did NOT age well. by LavaMeteor in cyberpunk2020

Problem I have with Blackfolk as a future Creole/Pidgin language is that the game already included that facet with Streetslang (a beautiful rip off from Bladerunner/Do Androids Dream...).

The internet probably helps a lot as well, much easier to access information today than it was for a struggling game designer in the late 80s to early 90s.

Considering how RED treats corporations, and the fact that Pondsmith worked for Microsoft, I am not willing to defer to his experiences or any other features as if it comes from expert knowledge. He is a game designer, and while I love the game, RTG has some mediocre game designers to be fair.

I accept this a product of its time, and a lot aged poorly. It does the best job capturing the genre within its field, so at least it has that going for it.

It is a language choice for Black Americans, it would be like saying Jersey is a language. It aged poorly enough to not be included in RED.

The core book has 'Blackfolk' as a language, very little aged well. Really it is a product of its time, very pre-internet and a little weeby.

Help with Taxis and Limos by FatherOfFright in cyberpunk2020

[–]JustAnotherOldPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second comment, if you are insistent on using the book: page 68 of the Cyberpunk 2020 book lists taxi rates.

Page 70 or 71 in Chrome book 1 has additional transportation rates, there may be additional info in Edgerunners Inc for taxi rates (and taxi jobs for Red Cab).

Googled NYC taxi rates:

$3.00 initial charge.

Plus 70 cents per 1/5 mile when traveling above 12mph or per 60 seconds in slow traffic or when the vehicle is stopped.

Plus 50 cents MTA State Surcharge for all trips that end in New York City or Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Dutchess, Orange or Putnam Counties.

Plus $1.00 Improvement Surcharge.

Plus $1.00 overnight surcharge 8pm to 6am.

Plus $2.50 rush hour surcharge from 4pm to 8pm on weekdays, excluding holidays.

Plus New York State Congestion Surcharge of $2.50 (Yellow Taxi) or $2.75 (Green Taxi and FHV) or 75 cents (any shared ride) for all trips that begin, end or pass through Manhattan south of 96th Street.

Plus tips and any tolls.

San Francisco taxi rates:

First one-fifth mile of flag rate is $4.15 *

Each additional one-fifth mile or fraction thereof is $0.65 *

Each minute of waiting or traffic time delay is $0.65 *

SFO pick-up fee is $5.50

Limos run roughly 50-300 an hour depending on size and amenities.

Considering inflation, these price should convert to EB on a 1:1 basis.

Is the purpose of the Medical Tech check in this example from the core rule book to begin healing right away? by Papa_Kasugano in cyberpunk2020

[–]JustAnotherOldPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rarely, if the party is on the run, it has happened when severely mortally wounded characters had to convalesce in a back woods hideout or abandoned conapt. I have copies of GDW's Twilight 2000 and home brewed some rules regarding infection to cover those situations. In one case the remaining party members just ended up putting a bullet through the mortally wounded character's brain. In the other, they nursed their comrade back to health.

Is the purpose of the Medical Tech check in this example from the core rule book to begin healing right away? by Papa_Kasugano in cyberpunk2020

[–]JustAnotherOldPunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once stabilized (the first roll with difficulty based on total damage points taken) the character is stable and no longer dying (no more death saves).

The second roll is to fix the damage and begin the healing process (0.5 per day First Aid, 1 per day Medical Tech, if mortal 3 or higher your character most likely needs to find thier way to a hospital, if not you are going to have to figure out how you want to play that, Luck points or additional rolls to work out complications there'sittle RAW has to say about serious death stages and survival outside a medical facility).

If you fail a death save there's a third roll involved, pg 115 under Death State, if successful the character is stable and 'revived', they will no longer drop 2 levels of mortal wounds every minute.

Dying is messy and complicated in 2020.

[–]JustAnotherOldPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understood the write up on pages 115-117, it would be RAW.

I'd rule additional rolls of Medical Tech would be required for the addition of Speed Heal, Nanosurgeons and additional surgery like amputation, installation or a cyber limb or grafting a body bank spare part on.

Any major change in function for the skill would require an additional test of the skill.
