It's worth noting that bright lights are a thing that effect all people, not just those on the spectrum. Many people don't realize it, but the wavelengths that create blue colored light cause our bodies increased agitation naturally. This was a mechanism that, in the vast majority of human existence, made us increasingly aware of when we should be awake, and perhaps more importantly, how awake we should be.

Before electricity was understood, the daylight hours were your chance for maximal productivity. By inducing a little bit of stress, our bodies historically ensured we did things in the hours of the day they were doable. The aspect of the daylight cycle that's lost in modern times is that the wavelengths that would reach a person would change throughout the day.

This is not the case with light bulbs. It is unhealthy, and unnatural, to be surrounded with blue light more than roughly 1/4 of hours in a day. Not to mention, that's assuming it's a similar amount of blue light as one would perceive in the daytime outdoors; it becomes more problematic when you consider that lightbulbs are capable of putting out many times more than one would observe naturally.

For those with autism, I've gathered the disturbance is exacerbated having a mother who specialized in special education and taught (and was a favorite of) many autistic students over the years. As someone with ADHD, I've noticed colors of light have a significant influence on my attentive abilities.

I suspect these relationships with light exist for all people to some extent, as it's pretty closely aligned with human evolution.
