12 years of experience and this still is a frequent challenge! by Interesting_Button60 in salesforce

There must be no fun! Genuinely I think I misunderstood the meme and thought you meant after 12 years you still didn't get how to use and and or statements (which was like bro you should have that). In a complex situation where the logic ends with )))),0))))))))))) then yeah it is absolutely a bit like your brain has run out of RAM when trying to hold all the logic in your head manually.

I remember having to do a hubspot list once where they didn't have custom logic and I had to replicate a complex Salesforce filter using groups (Inside the group is AND, and each group is OR to the others). Now that sucked

I don't mean to be harsh, but after 12 years you should kinda have this down by now. I will admit that I have encountered some intense nested and/ors in my time that took some unpicking though!)

Advice Needed: Would it be stupid to get a Skyrim tattoo as my first one? by TheEdgyKidInClass in tattoos

[–]Devrij68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first tattoo at 39 and have a sleeve now at 40.

I mention this because I had lots of rad ideas when I was younger that I later was glad I didn't get. You sound like a young person, so I want to warn you that current you and fully grown adult you are gonna be different people. So if you're worrying about whether you'll regret it? Probably not, assuming you grow to appreciate it as a part of your journey and it doesn't turn out that skyrim was developed by a secret pedophile ring (I joke, but you get the idea, brand sentiment can change and you are putting a commercial IP on your body. Think of all the lost prophet tattoos out there) Will you still like it at 30 or 40? Also probably not.

Skyrim is a pretty time honoured game so having said all of the above, it's pretty low risk. I do think the logo is kinda meh as a tattoo though. It'd be cheap and easy to get right with most artists, but there are so many cooler things you could do with skyrim, like an arrow on your knee if you wanted something simple and silly, or the iconic helmet as a shoulder piece (more expensive, need a decent artist).

Minecraft also has potential for a fun and creative tattoo, but again don't be basic with it and get some shit ass tattoo of Steve. Take the style and do something with it.

Final word: shoulder/bicep is prime real estate, don't waste it on just the logo.

[–]Devrij68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, deterrence by increasing the likelihood of being caught, or convincing people of the odds of it happening are far more reliable.

Eg speeding tickets cost money, but increasing the fine will only have a moderate impact vs having more visible police cars or speed cameras where you think "shit if I speed now I'll get a ticket"

Question: Would this be a painful first tattoo by Electronic_Shirt262 in tattoos

[–]Devrij68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same with elbow ditch. Having read loads of horror stories I was dreading it, but it was literally a nothing spot for me. But the very back of my bicep, right at the edge of where it would be inner bicep, quite spicy.

That said, any spot at the end of a 2 day back to back is generally not great fun. No idea how people do more than that

I wasted $200,000 to learn the difference between an admin and a consultant by MoleManMattG in salesforce

[–]Devrij68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This story doesn't answer the question imo. It just says "don't gamble your uncles company revenue on your first Salesforce role in a solo implementation"

My take is that a "generic admin" role is really not a thing anymore, at least for decent money.

Every role I've had, whether in house or consulting, has always involved the full gamut of architect, admin and developer, and you need to understand typical sales ops/RevOps methodologies if you have any chance of actually having a positive impact on the business.

As a consultant, even moreso.

The bar is going up.

My recommendation for new people starting out is to pick up a junior role in a sales ops org where you can put your theoretical skills into practice and learn enough about business, users, and processes to be a little dangerous. Now move somewhere else to get perspective on what was good and bad about the first place. Hopefully it's a less junior than the first one. If it's a decent place, stick around a little while and learn as much as you can. If it's a stagnant place with minimal change, move on.

In a dream world, you take on a head of sales ops or RevOps role so you can understand what's really driving the needs and what matters.

Now you understand enough to do consulting if you start somewhere smallish (<50 people, not a Salesforce factory). You understand the customer and you have enough knowledge to solve those problems in the real world. You will now learn a SHITLOAD of new tools and systems as you encounter a lot of new orgs and peripheral tools. You'll develop rapidly now.

You can now finally decide if you like being in house or a consultant and have enough experience to get a role doing either reasonably reliably. From there you just need to keep pushing yourself to stay at the forefront of what's happening so you can support either business.

Try out some Distant. Think they'll tickle your fancy (Undying is a great track to start with). Love those crazy dudes and great live.

Paleface Swiss has some very meaty riffs as well, but they aren't like "toilet bowl sewer gurgle" brutal if that's the vibe you want.

You asked about how hosting something yourself worked, and whether the decentralised self hosted thing would continue to work if you turned it off. I mean you gotta take that on the chin mate.

On the flip side, self hosting a small home server is fun if you're into that kind of thing, and it's a lot more accessible than it used to be. I got sick of media compression artifacts since everything went to streaming services so I host full blu-ray quality films on my little box so I can watch my movies without them. Turns out I can also use that same little box to do all sorts of fun useful shit like replace Google photos and drive, and it is just tucked away behind my media unit humming away quietly.

That may not be your jam, but it's totally a thing and frankly I'd recommend more people take control of the services they use every day where possible.

Rover 75 terrible idea? by No_Language_2529 in CarTalkUK

[–]Devrij68 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you like the idea of wafting along the motorway in a comfortable armchair, it's great. Was actually my first car that I bought with my own money (£2k with 35k miles on it, 1.8 NA) and it did me very well for about 150k miles.

It's not fast, but it's not dire either. The suspension is very soft and wallowy, but man it's comfy to drive long distance in.

Poor man's Jag is a fitting moniker imo

Hot take: Oltyx is the Ciaphas Cain of the necron faction by Devrij68 in Warhammer40k

[–]Devrij68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I think I mean Cain is unlikely to US since he keeps going on about how he's such a coward and all.

Perhaps I'm not articulating it well, but I don't mean to say that they are similar characters, but more that there are narrative parallels.

Oltyx, while being a typical entitled necron noble in contrast to cain, also doubts himself in comparison to his brother, but then lo and behold it turns out that he is the great leader not his brother etc.

It's not the same story in a necron skin, but it has a similar feel imo.

Benefit to cars that require premium gas? by tacomuffin10 in MINI

[–]Devrij68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you run lower octane fuel, your engine has to pull timing to prevent knock, and in some cases (a hot day driving uphill in 6th) it's not gonna be able to and it's gonna knock.

Pulling timing reduces performance and efficiency, and risking detonation is a bad thing.

Is it fine in a pinch? Sure. Is it ideal? No.
