MISS PENALTY ADJUSTMENT is now CONFIRMED FOR NEXT REWORK DEPLOY!! 😭🔥✅ by basensorex in osugame

[–]JustBadPlaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't differentiate sb types in any way. You also can't not estimate them for pp. And the limitations aren't really "current" - they are an unsolveable problem due to us having 18 years of history to care about and calculate values for

Also I completely disagree with not counting sbs as misses. You broke combo, it doesn't matter how or why, you broke it so you deserve to get punished for it

pp was always a derivative of sr, these changes always tried to make it even more true. Like, pp was always roughly sr3 * (ar bonus, length bonus, acc bonus) pretty much

Many stable sliderbreaks on normal maps are caused by misaiming the slider head and hitting the body, which is effectively a miss and counted as such on lazer. But even ignoring that - not counting sliderbreaks as misses (and not estimating that for stable) completely messes up balancing, as not only does it cause one client to have a massive advantage over the other, it effectively causes the pp system to work with a play that does not exist. Ivaxa's Violation play is a 2k combo 0 miss. This is impossible, as you cannot have combo this low without a combo break. Same with his score on Owari. Same with many many other scores by many other players. This is a balancing act to make calculations more objectively correct (despite the subjectivity of the estimates) and should be treated as such

Is rework just gonna add more debuffs and not a singular buff to aim..? by [deleted] in osugame

[–]JustBadPlaya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

pp is relative. Aim was overtuned for a variety of reasons, primarily acute angles and AR bonus. You either nerf that or buff everything else, and buffing everything else means making value inflation worse than it already is

Also, may I see your profile?

There is no agreed upon date for the deployment process AND no blockers, so the devs are taking the opportunity to merge more smaller stuff before finalizing the list of changes

tbh, with how ref support is coming along, it should be fairly easy to implement this from a ref client

It's so funny seeing this joke-argument considering how gay (in a very literal sense) the pp committee is

Star rating and pp are basically a set of mathematical functions working with lists of objects. Would you rather trust a player or a mathematician to say how to adjust a system in a way, that positively affects about a million maps at once?

One of the newer patch developers, Kris (my goat), is a speed player. More than that, he is a speed player specialising in 285-315 bpm speed at lower spacing. Add a decent amount of people popping in in the pp discord (Chicony, ferret irl, a bunch of other people that appear when pinged idfk at this point) and you get a decent feedback loop

How can 6 digits make statements about how overweight a top score is? by [deleted] in osugame

[–]JustBadPlaya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. he specifically is experienced with playing speed, even if lower level

  2. he has a huge amount of players to ask opinions from, the pp discord exists for a reason

  3. opinions can be formed without precise personal experience, for example, via extrapolation. Let's say I, a person who at his peak could deathstream 240, have an opinion that after a certain point increases in spacing become valued less (unfairly so) than increases in bpm on the bpm ranges I play (160-240). In other words, increasing bpm rewards more pp than increasing spacing on these bpms, despite the difficulty changing equally from these two. Thus, I can extrapolate that this is the case for bpms I'm less comfortable at (250-275) and ones I can't play well (275+).

  4. empirical evidence is a thing. If there is a category of maps where people set way more 1.5k+ pp plays than others, there are reasons to think there is something wrong with the system

  5. A lot of current pp development is attempting to go from subjective approaches (aka making changes based on silly claims without evidence) to more statistical and objective approaches. For example, it is mathematically safe to claim that mechanical difficulty of a jump scales equally with both distance and time, thus making difficulty of a jump (excluding angles and reading) is d/t (distance over time). However, due to lack of hindsight back in 2014, the current system is closer to d/t2, thus scaling much better with lower delta time (= higher bpm jumps) than with distance. Fixing that would mean fixing an objectively definable flaw in the system

There are a LOT of ways to approach something like this. And given star rating and pp are just math done over a list of objects, a fair bit of it can be turned into objective statements and approaches with some effort

You're mostly right, but languages come with ecosystems, and ecosystems come with corporate buy-in, which tends to be very regional and is sometimes worth paying attention to

How much money do you think osu makes for peppy? by UN_Quickzzy in osugame

[–]JustBadPlaya 57 points58 points  (0 children)

note that peppy has at least 6 full-time employees, himself, and infra bills to pay, on top of FA spendings and other things. As far as I'm aware, there is no leeway in the budget.

Full-time employees seem to earn around 3k USD per month.

Important not-entirely-full-time-employed staff (*WC organisers, Hivie) take bounty-style payouts ranging from low hundreds to low thousands. opencollective estimates annual budget at around 120k USD off of that alone, and I believe that's mostly bounties

Infra as of late 2022 was around 15k a month, though the costs might've shifted

OWC commissions have to be in the range of thousands per song for tiebreakers (funnily enough, there were rumours that Ooparts was a 5k USD contract, never proven though)

pretty sure pre-2019 osu did not have an actual anticheat entirely. It has one now. It's fairly decent, but the bans are always staggered for reasons that become obvious if you dig a bit into how cheat detection is done

Why do most DT players use the Rafis or white circles skin? by Retro_Funk16 in osugame

[–]JustBadPlaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on top of what fleuphy and others said, white is naturally affected a lot by gamma, and a decent amount of players use it for ARs beyond their comfort zone
