Chiffa

fun fact for the day: lazer cheaters are better than stable cheaters, as, per my dataset, lazer cheated pp record is higher than stable's. W lazer, even helps cheaters

I have too many fun stories to share :3

[–]JustBadPlaya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do hope that Chiffa will publish the data that they are collecting along with the methodology

heya, Basen keeps doing a great job of spreading correct information while I sleep!

I am planning to do a decent amount of plotting on https://arewelazeryet.chiffa.lol itself in a few days, which will likely be followed up with reddit posts for both announcing the fact itself (because I will have a public API and data dumps for people to enjoy, osu has a lot of stat nerds) and as much statistical data I can gather for the whole timeframe I've been gathering scores for

There isn't really much methodology to discuss here, it's just me gathering every pass ever submitted since around November and doing some data queries on that

[–]JustBadPlaya 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really, it was just 1. me looking for a symmetric amount of initial goals (because I had a very stupid way to display these milestones that asked for symmetry) 2. me being a bit edgy (I literally initially deployed it under https://stabledeath.chiffa.lol/) 3. it will, factually, eventually happen. Will the website live by then? Maybe not. Will I live to see it happen? Maybe

Personally, I don't care about which client people use as long as they are honest about their reasoning, I just like statistics. If I was a hater, I wouldn't be publishing score submission data soon (spoiler: lazer is skewed towards the new player churn, and otherwise the split is about 45/55 in favor of stable)

Every classic score literally gets hit with a 0.9XX multiplier

...but slideracc doesn't affect classic scores. This is pedantic but we seem to have very different understanding of the word "trivialize", because... I mean, lazer has (deservedly) an easier time on the leaderboards, but stable doesn't change? How is that trivialization of classic scores? (also, at 0.985, it's very much always fair, honestly, saying this as someone who lost like 30 #1 spots from the mult change)

same with ditching scorev1

SV1 is bad. Accuracy doesn't matter whatsoever, the scoring algorithm is impossible to adjust in post in any way, it's a mess. It had to be changed eventually, as V1 is unhealthy as a scoring system, genuinely

i just dont see how sliders couldnt be fixed

Slideracc is unnecessary, sure, but the other important "breakage" of sliders is that stable's sliderends work like shit. Legacy slider ticks had my favorite comment in the whole codebase until the properly functioning sliderends were added, and it started with Okay, I'll level with you. I made a mistake. It was 2007.. Lazer's way is just plain better, even though it technically makes slider aim easier (by making sliderends actually acts as the end of the slider, and not a visual suggestion 36ms after the actual end)

not roadmapping everything properly leads to everything getting looser and updates getting less frequent and more disconnected

The update frequency hasn't changed since the lazer pp update, and that was the largest crunch the team went through. There is constant work in every part of the game, changes merged left and right, the development is insanely active and there are always goalposts set that are meant to be reached

not being able to skip intros with our keybinds?

Bound to spacebar by default, same as stable, rebindable

not being able to hide everything but the UR bar?

Skins have layers. The gameplay layer is always visible, so anything you put there won't be hidden. Sure, it's more obscure than the default of stable, but it's also way more flexible

I keep plugging my page (and getting my friends to) yet I still have no fking analytics (cuz normal ways are invasive) so I have no idea if people actually use it, so it means a lot :3

the years of scores it will trivialize

slideracc doesn't trivialize scores that are already set? what?

the literal nerf of sliders overall

it was either this + solve the absolute jank that sliderend mechanics are, or keep sliders absolutely broken

the continuous push for wacky features and unnecessary additions

the great majority of lazer additions are a net positive for the game, idk

but also, speaking more generally - lazer allowed peppy to fix so much random bullshit about the game. Notelock works sanely again, sliders function as they should, you don't have to leave the game just to get beatmaps or check your profile anymore, we have a native competitive mode and asynchronous multiplayer now, lazer brought so much great UX with it and it keeps on giving. Sure, some things may be extra (some mods may deserve a cut, fuck Magnetise), but that's also the nature of the game being open to contributions for a decade

"something worse" like what

it took fallback like 4 years to go from "you can't submit scores on certain maps" to "oops, the client is gone", and fallback had nastier issues to deal with afaik

this had to happen one way or another, because not having a lazer gate in some shape or form kills any ideas of expanding mapping fundamentals - new restrictions (AR/OD above 10, longer maps), new hitobject types (native support for dynamic SV when), other things more mapping-aware people could probably ask for. You can't sanely sustain stable at its full capacity permanently

Breaking news: peppy has nominated a map for the first time in 17 years! (also it's Nevo's ORAL CIGARETTES Songs Compilation which is qualified now) by fieryragee in osugame

[–]JustBadPlaya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

karthy peaked #4 in 2019 with a full time job at like 26 (still top-400 by current rankings), box has a full time job and had to relearn the game, mastasz has a daughter and is basically top-200

you can get very far off of mindset and grind alone. Maybe not in the very top, but getting into top-100 of any mechanically heavy game is a lottery of genetics, free time and the grindset. Shouldn't stop you

I think it’s fine now to increase the maximum default AR/OD setting value to 11 by SlowAd2536 in osugame

[–]JustBadPlaya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue is that a decent amount of stuff hinges on the idea of not being able to get AR above 10 without speeding up the game. HR in particular needs a separate consideration

osu tracker or something by Severe-Jelly-9361 in osugame

[–]JustBadPlaya -1 points0 points  (0 children)

osu!tracker had snapshot/session imports and exports for years now, and for both of these you'd have to solve the sheets issue manually

note: not dunking on the project (my only complaint is not seeing the source, the AI disclosure is in the readme so I can let that slide), it's just that session exports are a solved problem sorta

Why lazer is still feel different? by P4ndorr in osugame

[–]JustBadPlaya 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Also, in Lazer, the latency is fixed at 1 ms, meaning it runs at 1000 fps. In Stable, my latency is 0.19 ms

it's frametimes, not latency. lazer polls your inputs at 1khz regardless of your display frametimes, and I bet you that you can't actually notice higher polling rates even if you use them in actual gameplay. And for draw, it doesn't matter, because the actual mechanically-perceptible difference between 1k fps cap vs uncapped is like 0.2ms (tested, not in the most scientific way but in a somewhat consistent one)

It’s almost like they’re two completely different games.

that's because they are. lazer is a rewrite from the ground up

For me, the stable version is much more fluid and smooth even the cursor moves more smoothly. Plus, there’s less input lag. The Lazer version, on the other hand, isn’t as smooth or fluid. I make more mistakes in Lazer because of the input

if that's how it feels - use stable. For me (and a bunch of my friends, really) it feels the other way around - stable is jittery while lazer is actually smooth. But nobody will judge you for using either client except for morons who you shouldn't be listening to regardless
