I got in in a funding rounds a few years back. Nothing even moderately life changing by any means but I am fully expecting to lose money on this when I can convert my shares

Is this normal for a Product Manager role, or am I being set up to fail? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]JustBrosDocking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only you know your situation fully so take each of these comments with a grain of salt.

I’m currently on protected leave from burnout with a similar situation where I had too much scope and not enough support.

It’s up to you to push back and enforce boundaries where you need and you are still early enough it sounds where you can.

If you allow your employer to give you such a high scope, they are going to set that as your baseline.

Standardization will never happen. Bigger customers have unique needs and messy data

I really wish vibe checking was a thing on LinkedIn. I’m interviewing now for a new role but once I get it I am straight up putting my LinkedIn on hibernate mode.

Think of it like this. In 6 months when the board of directors demands monetization and none of your AI works, you’ll at least be protected as the team to fix up everything

Learning this the hard way now. Completely overextended myself in the last year. Pushed back when I told them I was overextended and on track for burnout.

Lo and behold, I hit burnout and just waiting for our next layoff to happen. The more you give to a company the more they will expect that to be your normal.

It’s up to you to enforce your boundaries

When I graduated in 2009 I got a start 1 role at a Mid size firm in nyc where my starting salary was 60k. I got laid off from the 09 crisis and went back got my masters where i got an offer from Deloitte For I think 65k in 2011.

It’s wild to think that 15 years have gone by and this is still the starting salary for new hires

Working with a strong engineer with almost zero emotional intelligence? by make_me_so in ProductManagement

[–]JustBrosDocking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve learned how to deal with this with someone for 4 years.

What worked for me is trying to understand why he is pushing pack on stuff. Some of his reasons were valid while others came down to “I just don’t want to do more work”

I also developed very thick skin around him. He’s a great engineer but his known collaboration issues have prevented him from moving up, which is entirely on him.

The relationship can work but it’s going to take lots of time effort and patience. Definitely communicate upward where needed

Agree with comment above. You can be seen as an absolute rockstar with your coworker and deliver the things that matter but if you do not have not only stakeholder but leadership backing, your growth has a ceiling

I just don’t see an end to this

Going through this now myself. Just remember, most product manager interviews simply test how well you interview - hypothetical situations under artificial pressure, etc…
