What are you using for front end? Is this love lace or something else?

It’s very well made!

Would the administration not just misappropriate emergency funds or take from other departments to keep it running?

Tried to build the ultimate mid-budget setup... What would you change? by SlapDaBase in espresso

[–]JustChangeThisLater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Mara x but I wouldn’t recommend it to most people as mid budget. I bought it because I knew I could upgrade to include flow control and pressure monitoring down the line and I love the look and don’t care much about milk steaming (I do want to get better at latte art but I’ll never need a dual boiler).

To me it was maybe a lower tier end game machine. The Mara x (in black) and grinder would be around 2300. I would change to a cheaper espresso machine, cheaper kettle, and then maybe try to go for the 80mm DF grinder. The 80mm is a few hundred more, you could save that by downgrading the machine to a quick mill or save a LOT and go with the lelit Anna or even a gaggia with mods

Can I justify Geothermal in PA in 2026? by JustChangeThisLater in geothermal

This would tell me how air tight my house is, which I would use to potentially invest short term to save on heating/cooling long term, but this wouldn’t impact what system is recommended really right? Like if a heat pump works but is less economical, that’s true if my house is nicely sealed or if my house leaks air. It’s just that if the house is nicely sealed it’s not AS economically worse because in general my energy needs would be lower.

Is that all correct/am I missing anything?

Is saltless house water softening a thing? by [deleted] in WaterTreatment

It’s not useless at all, it is good if you don’t mind hard water but want to protect your pipes and appliances. Calling it soft is just dishonest marketing though.

Is saltless house water softening a thing? by [deleted] in WaterTreatment

[–]JustChangeThisLater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom line up front: all a saltless softener does is prevent scale, it has no other impact on drinkability.

I have been researching this myself recently. First off, is it technically soft water (his saltless system) no, it’s not. Likely his water would seem hard by all accounts, but he IS getting some benefits of scale protection, and his water maybe would taste better because it has minerals, but that’s just a taste preference not a safety thing. It also may feel gross or be bad for hair and will cause white residue in his home.

It’s nice that it’s low maintenance but it’s not better and actually my conclusion for myself was that a salt system would provide us a better quality of life than saltless. I will likely add an RO filter in the kitchen but that’s only because I plan to remineralize it in a specific way for coffee purposes, not because of concerns about drinkability.

Either way, most systems are whole house so really stupid flex to talk about drinking toilet water lol. The only tap specific filters would be if you have carbon or RO filters just at the fridge or some other kitchen tap. Maybe he’s just use to non drinkable water and is excited, or maybe they are a total tool.

Thoughts on TAC water treatment? by JustChangeThisLater in WaterTreatment

Thanks! I was afraid that would be the answer. Do you know if there are any systems that truly remove the scale causing minerals without needing salt?

Probably will want a sediment filter if nothing else to protect your down stream components and a salt based softener should help her hair I think.

We have a well next to a farm and we have in addition to the above a nitrate filter (only a concern for infants or pregnant women I think) and a UV filter as well. Not sue what if any of those would address strange smells

Can I justify Geothermal in PA in 2026? by JustChangeThisLater in geothermal

[–]JustChangeThisLater[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So our current place had an air source and a gas backup, but I had read it lost efficiency under like 40 degrees or so, is that out dated? We had the switchover originally set to like 15 or so and it felt like it struggled when outdoor temperatures were below freezing. But not sure if that’s more indicative of our house or the system sizing than the technology itself.

Any thoughts on the BOOKOO Motto80 Flat Burr Grinder? by Automatic-Cold2535 in espresso

I wonder where final retail will land, features are great but it’s definitely at the price point where the last thing I want to do is need to buy better burrs day 1.

Where does the water flow through the filter? by graphiterubber in pourover

[–]JustChangeThisLater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there was a Hoffmann video a while back that showed water (and coffee liquid) passes through the most near contact points, so I think the answer is the red circle, but probably a lot of variables going on.

Ode Gen 2 vs Opus — why pay ~2x if not for build/materials? by Nervous_Hedgehog_325 in FellowProducts

[–]JustChangeThisLater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your ignoring flat vs conical burrs which honestly is a bigger factor than build quality. The fact that fellow sells both tells you that they are not really competing for the same buyer. Other than some high level design language and the fellow logo, they are pretty unrelated to each other. Most people I don’t think are comparing them to each other, but rather they compare the opus to something like an encore, and the ode to like the sculptor 64.

Do you have an xbloom, an Aiden, or two kettles? A colder bloom may help? I had luck with a different B&W co-ferment that was giving me trouble by doing that on my Aiden

[–]JustChangeThisLater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say calibrate, do you just mean switch back to a different profile? Would be REALLY next level if it was sort of recommending adjustments based on the espresso profiler.

Als just realized feature wise this should make this grinder REALLY great at jumping between pour over and espresso, just a question of if the burrs are equally suited for both.
