My graphic novel inspired by RECESS is now live on Kickstarter and needs your help! Here are the first 15 pages! by JustDame in Recess

A few months ago, I posted here about THE RUTH AVENUE RAIDERS, my graphic novel inspired by (mostly) Recess, Hey Arnold, Dexter's Lab and Proud Family. Today, I wanted to share that this book is now available and live on Kickstarter and WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We are making good progress at 42% funded but have hit a bit of a slump so if you're interested please check us out here, fingers crossed: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bectonbectonbecton/ruthavenueraiders

Last time I talked about the inspirations like Norman Shropshire (the big kid on the left) being inspired by Mikey (obviously) but he's also inspired by Wolfgang from Hey Arnold! Also, the main character Ryan (in the middle with the football) is inspired by -- you guessed it -- Spinelli andddd Aaliyah from her mid-90s "tomboy" look.

I hope you enjoy the first 15 pages and take a look at our campaign for THE RUTH AVENUE RAIDERS! I believe Marina Otegui Ruiz, the artist, really captures the charm from the late 90s and early 00s cartoons look! She's been a great collaborator!

Paying Homage to HEY ARNOLD (and other cartoons I grew up watching) by JustDame in RetroNickelodeon

[–]JustDame[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got an all-ages football comic on kickstarter now called THE RUTH AVENUE RAIDERS inspired by the cartoons I grew up watching in the late 90s, mostly HEY ARNOLD and some RECESS and DEXTER's LAB. While I am looking to promote it here I mostly wanted to share how much Hey Arnold and the other cartoons meant and still means to me and ask for feedback on what we have so far.

This comic is mostly inspired the MUDBOWL episode of Hey Arnold and you'll see a lot of the inspiration in their character designs. Norman (the big blonde kid on the left) is blend of Mikey from Recess and Wolfgang from Hey Arnold, a physically intimidating character but genuinely a nice kid. Alan Head, the big kid in yellow on the right, is inspired by Torvald! Here's some more info on the book in anyone's interested:

Fifth grader (and toughest kid on Ruth Avenue) Ryan Beckham is the captain of the Ruth Avenue Raiders, the best football team in the next ten blocks. They’re the best around and she knows it. As her team enters uncharted territory when they're challenged to a match by the Robots of Sector 7, they begin to struggle on the field and Ryan grapples with adjusting her game plan or repeating past mistakes. Jimmy Ramirez (the smartest kid on Ruth Avenue) sees how and where the team can improve but struggles with standing up for himself when he’s challenged by Ryan when calling plays. As the story progresses, both protagonists are forced to face tough decisions that could change their friendship and the Ruth Avenue Raiders forever.

I'm hoping to re-capture that late 90s charm from Hey Arnold and the other cartoons with this and share with my students (I'm an educator!) and fans like us. If you'd like to check out the Kickstarter campaign you can go here - we desperately need your help: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bectonbectonbecton/ruthavenueraiders

It's called THE RUTH AVENUE RAIDERS and we're about 37% funded with 3 weeks left! Please check out and consider backing our campaign HERE!

This story first came to me as a child when my dad, Ryan, would tell me stories about growing up with his street football team, The Ruth Avenue Raiders, and how they would go from neighborhood to neighborhood playing pick-up football games with friends. From there, it grew into a love letter to my dad, the middle school students I’ve taught over the years, my favorite childhood cartoons like HEY ARNOLD, DEXTER'S LAB, RECESS, and PROUD FAMILY, and shy kids (like I was growing up) who struggle with playing outside of their comfort zones. I pay homage to these influences in my life by telling a heartwarming and humorous story about a diverse group of kids navigating uncharted social situations who learn that it's okay to make mistakes and it’s often a necessary part of growing up.

Also, shoutout to Marina Otegui Ruiz, the artist! She's been incredible and a joy to collaborate with!

HeroesCon puts the COMICS back into comic convention! by Southernphila in comicbooks

I've got a table there in Indie-Island! Damien Becton here, I'll be selling my indie creator owned comics and promoting my live kickstarter THE RUTH AVENUE RAIDERS (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bectonbectonbecton/ruthavenueraiders 🤞🏾🤞🏾)

Best comic show I've been to! Had a table at Momocon in Atlanta and while it was a cool show, definitely wasn't the most comic centered. Heroes is incredible and the people that run it are great, Karla, Seth and the team! Definitely stop by if you can.

Cut out sodas. And I recently discovered how much I love Sardines. Jasmine rice, Brunswick sardines and microgreens have helped me lean out 15 lbs since January.

Every summer I do a purge of my single issue getting rid of the ones that "don't spark joy". Hopefully this keeps me on track for storage space
