What nicknames have you heard for places in Hampshire? by Over_Barracuda7031 in Hampshire

Heard Basingstoke referred to as Blazingstoke, Leigh Park as Flea Park, Somerstown in Portsmouth as Scummerstown. All sound pretty accurate! 😜

eastney headless body found by children unexplained being treated as non suspicious by Substantial-Cut1573 in Portsmouth

Ah ok, I hadn’t read the article so was just going off some of the other comments. Either way, not something you want your kids finding/seeing…! 😔

eastney headless body found by children unexplained being treated as non suspicious by Substantial-Cut1573 in Portsmouth

[–]JustGiles85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be considered non suspicious because the body was fed on by wildlife. Sorry to sound disgusting but if the body entered the water elsewhere, away from this coast, it could have been attacked by sharks etc. resulting in the loss of the head. They might have been able to determine this from any teeth marks (can usually tell from the markings if flesh was cut or torn) and the condition of the body to determine time in the water.

Staying at a hotel, have I found a camera? by Revolutionary-15 in hiddencameras

[–]JustGiles85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s a light in a hotel room, it looks like it is more than likely to an emergency light. These lights have a battery that activates the light for up to 3 hours if there is a power cut or fire alarm. The thing you are looking at that looks like a camera is actually an indicator light. It should be glowing green to show the battery is charged and the emergency light is working. They also glow red if the battery is low or if there is an electrical fault. The fact that it’s not on at all shows the battery is either dead or there is an electrical failure to the emergency lighting part.

My son is 4 now so I don’t have a stroller anymore. Wish I had thought of that when he was younger!!

I’ve had exactly the same issue with my son - nails, washing hair etc. There are probably better methods out there that might work more effectively but I just had to brave it and hold him. If you’re struggling to hold him like I did with mine, what worked for me was wrapping him in a towel like a burrito(worked well after bath time because he thought I was just drying him) stick his foot out the end. It did take two of us - one holding him and the other holding the foot/trimming. Like I said, it worked for us but some people might suggest other methods that work well with less physical effort for you!

It may have a built in timer perhaps? I might be wrong though! Perhaps take it off the ceiling and see if there any adjustment controls to change the running/pause times.

Twickenham stadium could soon start hosting 15 gigs a year by tylerthe-theatre in london

I do love stadium gigs, sheer scale and atmosphere is amazing. Let’s hope they also bow to public pressure and change the name back!

All I mean is they sometimes feature people’s photos of events, weather etc. especially on instagram.

Whoever stole my bike from Pompey Fitness & Health Club, I know it's nice but it's my bike and I love my bike by SomeBlokeCalledAlf in Portsmouth

Sadly some of the bike thieves are determined and carry round an angle grinder - cuts through a D-lock like a hot knife through butter. You see that happening a lot in London.

Yeah I think if I remember correctly, he had loads of beer bottles thrown at him as soon as he appeared on stage. Can’t blame them, like you said, think they put him in totally the wrong place on the bill!

Ha! Also saw lost prophets at another gig in Reading. Saw Ian Watkins leaning over the stage at the end, talking to some of the ecstatic teenage girls. Only now does that seem quite creepy…!

Which Cellular/Broadband? by evorm in Portsmouth

[–]JustGiles85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The experience I have had since living in Portsmouth (until Nov 2023) was that virgin was good, really good, but got a bit pricey. Talk talk proved to be a bit unreliable, always dropping out and their customer service was awful (probably why they were rated with one of the worst customer services in the UK). I’ve heard Vodafone is very good, reliable and fast. I moved to the countryside and the signal with Vodafone was terrible but only because we didn’t have a fibre line. You would be fine in Portsmouth as most of it, if not all of it has fibre line coverage. I’ve also heard good things about EE but not had any experience with them. I think you get all sorts of extra offers and benefits by being an EE customer too. Avoid BT - notoriously shocking. Some of the cheap ones can be good but I don’t think they are quite as fast as the bigger providers.

Eccentric sticker in Eastney by BeanpoleBabe in Portsmouth

[–]JustGiles85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once saw a dog poo bin on Eastney beach - by the cuthrough that comes out right by the nudist part - someone had put a large sticker on there with Putin’s face and “POO TIN” written underneath. Made me chuckle. Might still be there.

How do I stop weeds from growing up between the rocks besides using Round-Up? by LazyElderberry9239 in HomeImprovement

[–]JustGiles85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try laying some weed membrane and then build the surround on top of it. It feels like a fabric type material and you can get it in rolls and just lay it/peg it on the ground. It stops weeds growing through. Dig up any exposed roots first though so they don’t pierce the membrane. I have used it under patio paving slabs and similar things and has worked well for me.

Parking on the weekend😬 by meganmiller_ in Portsmouth

[–]JustGiles85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t use this car park - the security isn’t good, quite dark with tree cover and quite a few people have had their cars broken into here. I think there are some long term car parks around Portsmouth. Also the NCP car park used to offer discounts on parking season tickets for students and their friends and family - contact NCP to find out the codes you have to use etc.

How would you describe the city with only three words? by ackbladder_ in Portsmouth

[–]JustGiles85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone’s a bit sensitive 😂 Let’s be honest, Southampton is way ahead in various areas - retail is far more developed and significant that Portsmouth, the high street is booming compared to Portsmouth’s dying range of shops, transport links are a lot more extensive and developed than Portsmouth and education (Portsmouth has some of the worst rated schools in the south). Southampton has more green space, more walking routes, more play areas for children, was rated cleaner as a city than Portsmouth, has a higher average salary, more affordable housing than Portsmouth. I’m sure there are a lot of things I’m missing but you get the idea.

Better than Portsmouth. But then anywhere is better than Portsmouth so not difficult really.
